Sony is in the habit of shutting down online multiplayer on some games recently. Just this week, we heard news that the plug is being pulled on Drawn to Death in six months, and this follows a trend that also saw Gravity Rush 2, The Tomorrow Children, and Kill Strain lose their online features.
Now, someone has noticed that a trio of older PS3 games are also being subjected to the big switch off -- namely Warhawk, Twisted Metal, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. All three games will have their online functionality disabled from 25th October 2018, so there's less than a month left for each of them. This is especially sad for Warhawk as, from what we understand, there's still a dedicated player base, and unless you're able to play via LAN, the game's online-only nature means it'll be practically useless.
In the case of Twisted Metal and PS All-Stars, they will of course still be playable offline, but this news will no doubt affect a few players. Still, these three games have all enjoyed online for quite a long time, so removing their online features makes a little more sense.
Do you still play any of these games online on PS3? Will you be sad to see their servers shut down in a few weeks' time? Pray for a Warhawk revival on PS4 in the comments below.

I absolutely loved Warhawk. A personal favourite PS3 game, and one of the first multiplayer games I really got into.
Not that PS All Stars had a very active online anyway but still, quite sad. I'm worried if Killzone Mercenaries, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, and Oreshika might fall on the same path.
I played Twisted Metal once in a while since I love that franchise since the PS1 era I'm gonna go back to play it for the last time this weeks
Already sold my ps3a couple of month after I have ps4. I want new twisted metal and warhawk though.
and this is why all games should have some strong single player content especially on console
it's fine to base a game around the MP but once the servers go down the game is worthless
@Quintumply Same here. Other than a bit of UT, Warhawk really turned me on to online gaming.
Fantastic game, had great support too.
Hey Sony - Remaster Warhawk!!
@SoulsBourne128 Looking at Sonyβs choices, I would expect most of those to be gone in the next 12 months.
@Quintumply Haha, exactly the same story for me too! Loved, loved, loved that game, it was an absolute hoot! Good times πππ
Warhawk port to PS4 when?
Hmm i might redownload ps allstars on my vita to see if i can have a final rumble online in that case
@FullbringIchigo this is exactly my problem with Destiny and Gran Turismo Sport (to an extent). PSN goes down or server shut down, I can't play. For GT, I'm referring to the game saves.
PS All Stars Battle Royale 2 when Sony?
PS All Stars > Super Smash Bros
And no All Stars ainβt a Smash Clone!
@MaseSco I have a feeling once GT sport goes in to end of life a patch will be issued to take saves 'offline'
@FullbringIchigo why should they always have a strong single player component? If you're still playing a PS3 game that old for the multiplayer aspect, the single player component is going to be way past irrelevant.
Warhawk? Was that a launch title? Sounds familiar from way back when. If it was surprised it lasted this long.
Never played it, online only, but I think I played the spin-off Starhawk single player we got for free with PS+, that was a fun 3rd person action open world tower defence game. Or something.
@kyleforrester87 for Legacy purposes, for example you can still play a NES game today if you want to and in 20 years time you would still be able to play it but not this game once the servers shut down the game has zero value, it's worthless but if it had some form of single player content at least then people who like the game would still be able to play it in some form, even if it was an offline bot mode but a more robust single player mode would just increase it's life even more
@rjejr Yeah... Starhawk was a crippling disappointment as a follow up to Warhawk.
I still have the bundled earpiece!
@FullbringIchigo ah legacy purposes, plastic junk on the shelf you mean. I get what you're saying, but really not everyone needs that. Bar a few classics I'm perfectly happy with the idea of playing something, enjoying it, and moving on. And if you loved it because of the multiplayer, a single player component isn't going to be a reason to keep you playing Warhawk after the servers go off.
An extra excuse to bin (or better yet recycle) some of the discs that have been sat on my shelf for 20 years would be appreciated.
Dude!! Warhawk was my first PS3 game (got my PS3 around 2008-09) and I have so many memories with it. It's been a year or so since I last played, gotta find my disc and play it one last time ;(
Games that have little to no multiplayer activity I can understand.
But when a game still has a bustling online community, it makes me feel bad.
Yet will they pull the game of the store as well since it's an only online game. It's a shame they pulling Warhawk off because as stated it's got a fan base and it would have been nice to play it on ps now but again dowbside to the PS4 and PS3 game compatibility that CELL CPU really made it hard to play backwards game unless streamed
@JoeBlogs i'm not saying it wasn't worth playing just that there is now no way to keep playing
@solocapers That would make sense, but I won't bank on that until Sony actually says it....
Man, I still wish they'd leave like, ONE peer-to-peer server for every game on some skeleton computer way in the back. RIP to everyone who still enjoys the older generation. pats PS3
@FullbringIchigo No need to explain yourself I know exactly what you mean! Some personnel just don't get it or wont get it. Some folks rather just buy a remaster or download a digital copy. What you have on YOUR shelf is your business for legacy purposes or viewing purposes. Do you π
Why do they shut down servers if people still play these games. About a year ago I switched from Xbox 360 back to the Playstation 3 before I made the decision to get the PS4 and the first game I went for was WarHawks but I couldn't find it. Really miss that game...
@KALofKRYPTON Well I never played Warhwak or the online of Starhawk, just want Sony included with PS+, so it was fine by me.
Tried to platinum PSASBR a few years ago but there were so little people online that the matchmaking took ages. Still missing 1 online trophy... might try to get it before the purge happens.
On a sidenote, I expect sony to announce in 2019 that they will pull psn support from ps3 and psvita before the end of 2020. Iβm already double dipping all my digital games with a physical copy.
Twisted Metal was a disappointment to me. The game had no soul and I tried so hard to like it.
Twas a top game. Me and my mate used to have a craic on this.
@get2sammyb @Quintumply @Tasuki @ShogunRok If they ever take down the PS3 store entirely, will I be unable to download patches for PS3 games I own digitally or physically?
That would suck so much since alot of PS3 games were unplayable pre-patch or incomplete...
