Sony has announced that PlayStation 3 production has ended in Japan, which essentially means that the console is done and dusted. Back in March, the company said that the end would soon be coming, and now it's put the final nail in the coffin.
The PS3 launched over a decade ago in its homeland; it'll be 11 years old this November. Up until 2015 or so, the last-gen console was still doing decent numbers in the land of the rising sun, but once the PlayStation 4 really started to hit its stride, sales saw a huge decline. From that point on, it was only a matter of time.

Amazing system, host to many great games. You weren't perfect, in fact you almost killes sony, but it was a blast.
What an utterly incredible console, I dread to think how many thousands of hours i spent on my PS3, and continue to spend on it.
I am gagging to play Demon Souls again at the moment but have decided to wait until E3 just in case a remaster is announced (hey, I can dream if I want too!!) 😃
Without wishing to sound like a blinkered fan boy, I would just like to thank Sony for providing so many exceptional titles, some of my fave franchises were born on PS3, Uncharted, Last of Us, Demons Souls, Motorstorm, Infamous the list goes on.
I was terribly late to the party, but when I did arrive, I had a blast. Truly an incredible system. Will never forget the joy of playing God of War III for the first time, nor the surprise of seeing the first trophy pop (didn't even know they existed). Fond memories.
@KratosMD At least it's not as dreadful as the PS2's infamous disc read error. None of my PS2's lasted even a full year before having to be repaired or replaced while my PS3 is almost a year old and isn't showing signs of any issues!
Hopefully the servers will stay live for several more years though. I've become really paranoid about how I'm going to be able to re-download games in the future and have started to buy physical of my favorite games.
I didn't quite enjoy the PS3 as much as the PSone or 2 (and 4 also seems like it's on track to top PS3) and though the hardware had some advantages it also had some major issues that made playing games on 360, mainly from 2006-2008, much less of a chore. That said, when 2009 rolled around Sony's first and second party kicked it into gear and third parties finally figured out the hardware and from that year right up through the end of 2013 it was by far the best console on the market software wise. My least favorite Sony console but I still had 40+ games for it. That's all that really needs to be said.
@KratosMD
If you are referring to the original 'phat' PS3 then I would agree seeing as mine was replaced twice but I have owned my slim for about 6 or 7 years and it's been faultless.
@thatguyEZ They'll probably do what they did for PSP and allow players to "push" downloads to their PS3 from the web-based Playstation Store website.
What does this mean for ps+??
"So long, farewell, auf wiedershen good night"
@Mega-Gazz Probably nothing, PS3 as a system is still around so services like that will have to continue.
@Mega-Gazz Until we hear something different, probably nothing.
@adf86 You know German?!
I'll still be using my PS3 for some time, especially with my replacement a month ago. There's still plenty of games last gen I haven't touched.
@Mega-Gazz Nothing at all. At least for now.
Amazing console. I had so many games for this system, which arrived at a time when I had disposable cash for the first time. As others have said, a difficult design made for substandard ports and a few years in the wilderness, but through all of that, Sony did what they always do. They brought games, games and more games. The variety and quality of exclusives was sublime and created some of the finest games ever seen.
I hope (and expect) to look back on the ps4 as fondly once that has been superceded in the future
@Rob_230
I adored the PS3, I still do, but I honestly think the PS4 is well on track to overtake PS3.
Japanese studios are firing on all cylinders this generation too compared to PS3 I think, not that PS3 was lacking, but I feel like there are even more this time around.
@Reanfan7 Lol I wish, just watched a bit too much Sound of Music back in the day.
I got my PS3 in 2012, after a little
hiatus from Sony I was only playing Wii at the time. I was knee deep in the newly released Skyward Sword, and I got my PS3 for xmas. I've yet to ever finish Zelda because PS3 consumed my life lol I had a buddy at work who had basically every game and let me borrow them one at a time, so I played hundreds
of classics almost immediately. I can remember countless hours playing Uncharted 3 online. I remember playing Journey for the first time and it changing my view on video games. Last of Us was mind blowing. ps plus gave me so many good memories as well. I love my ps4 but I still play PS3 from time to time. it will always be one of my favorite consoles and it brings up nothing but great memories. Rest easy PS3, you're truly special.
the train climb from Uncharted 2 - hell of a way to kick off
@Lovespuds Demon Souls a man (woman)can dream. It is still my favorite before the Dark Souls series.
You brought me Valkyria Chronicles on of my favorite games off all times and many more for that matter. PS3 you kicked the HD-DVD in the *** i will always be gratefull for that.
They may stop making it but I will keep using mine for a long time. I have a phat and a super slim. Great console all around.
@Lovespuds your not wrong. Im glad we seem to have moved away from all the remasters now, because we are seeing some incredible titles. Persona 5 alone has propelled ps4 become one of my all time favourite consoles; and thats before all the other incredible games that have been released or are on the way. 2017 looks genuinely insane for ps4. And I am so happy Japan has its groove back in the industry (not that I feel it ever really went away). The titles that have come out this year have been phenomenal.
Counting the days till ni no kuni 2
@Flaming_Kaiser hear hear. Valkyria chronicles is one of the greatest games I have ever played. And I have loved playing through again on ps4 with the europa edition.
I really hope Valkyria Revolution turns out well
I still remember buying my ps3, with gta 4, cod 4 modern warfare, fifa 2012, bioshock, uncharted 1 and tomb raider underworld. I remember putting Cod in as my first game and just being blown away by how much everything had progressed between ps2 and ps3. I have had, and will continue to have, many years of fun with the console
@ZurapiiYohane too many people still use ps3. I reckon there will be at least five years before servers are shut down (I.e. PSN access, and digital content - and of course, if like psp, purchases will still be available on the pc store); but individual game servers will start to drop periodically (such as EA's biannual fifa purge). Activision havent shut any COD servers yet so far as I am aware, so reckon blops will still be online for a while yet. The big issue of course will be what happens when servers are switched off and we can no longer download patches. Neither Sony or Microsoft have offered any solution to that issue.
Best console of all time. I've had four starting with the 60gb phat model, It's long dead. I've a 320gb slim, a 12gb super slim that I put a hdd in and 'drum roll' a brand new sealed 500gb super slim that I picked up about 6 months ago for €115 on an Irish site called Adverts.ie
I think the super slim is my favourite model.
@Flaming_Kaiser
I hear you squire, Valkyria Chronicles is an incredible game, I bought it day one having loved the demo (blimey, remember demos?😆).
Still use my launch day fat 60gb PS3 with the memory stick slots under the flap. It's my Blu Ray player. Cost me over well over £500 with Motorstorm & Resistance: Fall of Man. Never had an issue with it.
That'll do pig.
Got the PS3 in 2009, had a blast playing Uncharted and Yakuza.
What a system, so many memories.
Personal highlights for me are Disgaea 3 & 4, Final Fantasy XIII (loved it), Assasins Creed 2, GoW & the birth of one Nathan Drake.
I didn't get a PS4 till last year just because there were so many great games on the system. Unfortunately I didn't clear out my entire backlog as my PS3 died before then. Thermal paste melted off thanks to Skyrim. Thus the only two PS3 games that I own & are destined to stay uncompleted are Skyrim itself & MGS4.
Thankfully, I still have a couple in use (and one in reserve). My first fat 60 GB PS3, the one that plays PS2 games, still works like a charm, though it's mainly used for video playback in my vacation home.
Good times. Glad I still have my PS3 hooked up right next to my PS4.
Truthfully I only bought a ps3 about 5 or 6 years ago because I was after a bluray player and as it played games too I went for it.Didant play many games on it as I was into the 360 at the time but then my co-worker told me about Heavy Rain and once I played that,that was it..more or less forgot the Xbox 360 and hunted down all the Sony Exclusives.Great Machine with great exclusives and lots of rpgs!
Still have it hooked up next to PS4 and even though I hardly ever use it now it will stay that way for a while
Goodbye old friend. You had a rough start but finished strong.
Always a sad day when a console is retired. I Have a lot of great memories with my fat PS3 which also plays ps2 and ps1 discs and is still hooked up & at my disposal right next to my PS4. Tons of great games retail & digital and I built myself quite a remarkable retro library of classics even without the backwards compatibility!! If I have any complaints it would be the PS3 store always tossing me out when trying to shop!! Annoying!! Hmmmm🤔Maybe I'll grab another slim brand new and put in under my stairs!! Need some more backup (aside from my 500g white PS3) to my 600+ PS3 game library to play them on!!
Still playing mine very regulary... Between every PS4 game I lauch, in fact. Every time I finish a game from the current gen, I'm looking at my shelf and pick something from the previous one. For exemple, I discovered Arkham City, for the first time, a few months ago, on my PS3. I'm currently redoing the originals Uncharted (not the collection, the real originals) before aptemting A Thief's End on Ps4.
Still so much to do on my good old Ps3. I hope you never die, pal. Stay with me !
So long, you beautiful b*****d
my phat PS3 has worked perfectly since 2008, though since 2012 i've used the slim as the primary PS3. i still use it fairly regular as a media player and blu-ray player - with the bluetooth remote, playing blu-rays on it is much better than PS4 imo. recently played through resistance 3 on it.. i have about 80-90 games for it, so many memorable gaming moments.
I had a lot of fun with my PS3, mainly with the Ratchet and Clank games with the exception of Q Force and All 4 One I wasn't a fan of the former's tower defense gameplay or the latter's forced multiplayer with a cpu player with you at all times.
It had its problems especially with the earlier models with the overheating but it was a great jump up in console gaming fidelity and content, my first game I bought with it was Metal gear solid 4: sons of the patriots which my eyes was a great jump up from PS2. I've had a PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 but the biggest graphical jump up was from the PS2 to PS3, there was not such a jump from PS3 up to PS4....even though I love it!!!!!!
What a generation. Had the PS3 for 5 years. From 2011 to 2016. My first game was arkham asylum . My last was dead space 3. At the end had 40+ games. Still rate it higher than this gen.
It is sad to hear but inevitable at this point especially when PS4 doing so well. I got ps3 super slim & still play it almost every weekend. Just finished infamous 1 & 2 recently. Last night revisited ICO HD & God of war 3. These games & ps3 still awesome as it is.
Now I have the urge to revisit some of my favorite ps3 games including ICO collection, MGS4, R&C series, Infamous series, Uncharted series, GoW series, NiNokuni & almost all of the jrpg.
Just wish my PS3 won't die anytime soon.
@thatguyEZ Same here, I'd be furious if they disabled online patch updates for games.
I have a huge PS3 backlog and I don't install that many games all at once.
Sad announcement. I pre-ordered from a small local indie shop. Slotted Motorstorm on and the thing sounded like a metal grinder. I took it back and swapped it with no problems at all. It worked fine for a couple of years then conked out for some reason. Sony collected and gave me a replacement. Daughter still uses it to play GTA5 and the occasional zombie fest when friends come round. A far cry from the many hours she spent playing Kingdom Hearts. We still use for Netflix. play Movie Discs and view pics. PS4 is my mainstay nowadays.
best console of all times .ps3 legendary console
resistance fall of man easily top 5 ps3 games ever
I waited until the slim came out to invest in a PS3. I had taken a break from console gaming because neither the Xbox 360 or PS3 were appealing whatsoever at their launch.
Some of my absolute best gaming memories were on that PS3. Each year I remember thinking how great it was to be a gamer in that era. As much as I love the PS4, it was still second in my mind (until 2017... the year of PS4)
As I honestly hated the PSOne, and picked Gamecube over the PS2, the Playstation 3 was what brought me over to sony and kept me going with the PS4. So many great games on the PS3. The store was pretty fast in the beginning, but became horrible for the past 3 years (slowness and kicking you on and off constantly)...however, never stopped me with over 400+ downloaded titles, 300+ tv episodes, 100+ movie downloads, many themes, many avatars, a few game soundtracks and over 200+ physical retail games...all with just a 2TB internal hard drive no doubt (shame we weren't able to go higher or get the nice external hard drive support to give more space). Truly was an incredible system with some great new IP's (Last Of Us, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Puppeteer, Sorcery, Medieval Moves, Eye Pet, Sports Champions, Motorstorm) and still kept going with their older classics (Hot Shots Golf, Twisted Metal, God Of War, Jak And Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet And Clank, Ape Escape, Buzz and Sing Star). Many lasting memories of my wife and I playing the party games and Sing Star to death (yup, 100-200 sing star songs bought and downloaded). Playstation 3 brought me to Sony in a big way, and I never regret it!!!! Still have the original 'nicely polished' console (new HD of course) that still plays not only PSone but also PS2 games. Love it!!!!! Hopefully, with it's end, we'll get an update for the PS4 to where we can save the movies and tv episodes bought from the store, onto the hard drive itself (to where someone doesn't have to be connected to the internet to get and watch them) and another option to be able to store our own photos and home movies onto it too!!!! I guess, while I'm wishfully thinking, I'll also hope for the PS3 titles to make their way over to the PS4 store too!!!! Or at least a nice Remaster of Dante's Inferno and the Castlevania titles...maybe some Splatterhouse too to give it a fresh look!!!!
Nope it was fun but had a lot of issues that PS4 addressed!
The PS3 makes me appreciate what Sony accomplished with the design of the PS4.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
