Bungie has laid out its future plans for Destiny on PlayStation 3, which includes the permanent cancellations of Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner. As we previously covered, Destiny's next expansion - Rise of Iron - won't be coming to PlayStation 3, but according to Troubleshooter pages on Bungie.net, the now dubbed "Legacy Console" will also no longer receive major updates and access to many features will be limited or cancelled.

Starting in August, the weekly and monthly multiplayer events, Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner respectively, will also be cancelled. There will also be no more live events, such as the Sparrow Racing League or Festival of the Lost. Additionally, Xur will no longer sell individual exotic weapons and armour pieces. Instead, he will only be selling exotic engrams, which will decrypt into Year 2 exotics.

All methods for purchasing premium currency silver will also disabled, including the purchase of silver add-ons from the PlayStation Store. Thankfully, all other content including Strikes, Raids, Prison/Challenge of Elders and standard Crucible modes will remain intact and playable without issue.

As Bungie continuously points out on the aforementioned pages, in order to access the cancelled content after August, Legacy Console players will need to upgrade to a PlayStation 4 and purchase Destiny: Rise of Iron upon release. If those upgraded players wish to play content from any previous Destiny expansion, they will also need to re-purchase Destiny: The Taken King.

It goes without saying that this is a crushing blow to Destiny players who still enjoy the game on PS3, especially with the cancellation of Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner, two of the game's most popular competitive multiplayer components.

Has Bungie made the right decision, or should it let last-gen players enjoy all the current content Destiny has to offer? Sound off in the comments below.
