We've never shied away from saying that we hope that the next God of War game, in development for the PlayStation 4, represents a serious departure for the series. Cory Barlog – the director of God of War II – was, we assumed, brought back into the fold to refresh the franchise, but a resume leak suggests that we may be re-treading Greek mythology yet again.
According to the CV of veteran animator Harry Walton, he worked with CGI studio Brain Zoo last year on a project simply named 'God of War'. The California-based company's handled cinematic trailers for a variety of video games, including Disney Infinity 3.0, so it's likely that this production was put together for some kind of forthcoming reveal. E3, we suspect?
The downside? Walton worked as a senior character animator on Gorgon and Hydra creatures, suggesting that the setting used in previous entries still hasn't been ditched. Now, it's certainly possible that some kind of CGI trailer could look back at past instalments before moving to an all-new universe, but if this is another Kratos game with Greek Gods… Sigh!
We do love some God of War here at Push Square, but if there's ever a franchise that's needed a goddamn refresh, it's this one. Take us to Egypt, let us do battle with Thor – heck, we'd even be up for some kind of controversial conflict between Heaven and Hell. But if the brand's bald headed anti-hero features in any form, we may be out before we've even seen the inevitably lovely visuals.

Just had a horrible thought. What if this turns out to be a full-blown remake of God of War 1, and they're going to make us replay the entire trilogy again?
@get2sammyb that's exactly what I thought and with the brillant remake of Ratchet&Clank from the same time on PS2 I'm a little divided in what I think about it, in a way I played several times the first game, on the other was just PS2 versions upscaled, they could improve on the first story and expand a lot on that.
@get2sammyb
No! YOU go away!
@get2sammyb NO GOD! PLEASE NO!!! NOOOOOOOOOO
Imagine a loki fight that would be awesome
The Hydra is the first boss in God of War 1... I'm now really scared they're just going to remake the originals...
Hold me.
@get2sammyb
I wouldn't have even thought about that but now that you mention it. It makes sense, especially given the laziness I've seen from every company this gen. Even Nintendo. Everybody on this trio of websites loves to talk about how wonderful and innovative Nintendo is but honestly, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, DKC Tropical Freeze, Smash, all great games but nothing that really breaks the mold. I'd actually say SM 3D World, as much as I love it, is the safest 3D Mario platformer I've ever played. That's not a compliment.
@get2sammyb @Gamer83
Whilst I wouldn't be surprised if the other Gods of War games get remastered, I think the mythology as been pushed to its limit. I have read that GOW4 is releasing with the PS4k enhancements (according to the rumour - along with Deep Down) but thought the PS3 version looked impressive - even if its not really my type of game.
Given the choice between Greek or Egyptian Gods, the Egyptian has my interest a lot more. I feel that Greek mythology has been covered far more in media...
When I played the God of War demo back in 2005, I was amazed and blown away by everything. Plus, as a guy of Greek descend, I hold this series very dear. However, I do agree that after killing most of the pantheon of Gods in God of War 3 and exploring the past of Kratos in God of War: Ascension, there is simply nothing more to do that would have an impact on the story and move it forward.
Maybe that's why we got a standalone release of God of War III for ps4 and not the trilogy :/
Yea I am fairly certain this is total over reaction. Plus, who's to say this wasn't a gag just to throw a little shade? We also have to remember that the general gaming public loves GoW for what it is, and would want a new Greek mythology based game, although I still don't believe that's what this is. Also heard they were working on TWO games, could we be getting a God of War remake and then a new God of War style game with a different mythology and slightly different name??
@get2sammyb If they do remake 1 for PS4 hopefully we get a more open world experience like Infamous or Darksiders. I've never been all that impressed by GoW graphics b/c I feel they cheat by sacrificing camera control. And PS4 started with cartoon Knack, and even that had a fixed camera. If they want to make another GoW at least open it up and show me what PS4 can do.
It'd be a bit anticlimactic if they came out on stage at E3, God of War music blaring, and then announce a remake of the first game, though. That'd be disastrous, even!
This site writes more nonsensical bullcrap than the Daily sport.! It's only missing the topless t*tty pictures!
Santa monica will have a fresh game , even if it's still set it greek kratos time... Who cares?
Don't knock or speculate before you've seen it FFS. Santa monica are great. One direction haircuts are not.
Language - get2sammyb
@Bazza78 I am sorry but I have to disagree with you we are all bored of kratos his story is finished most of the gods are dead what would be the point in making another one based in the same era we need a fresh start
"heck, we'd even be up for some kind of controversial conflict between Heaven and Hell."
I think Bayonetta's got that situation covered.
I'd pay some serious cash for a Scientology themed GOW.
Or Pastafarianism
I hope they make an open world god of war game, but thats probably just wishful thinking.
Hopefully it is a crumby remake and it kills off the series, then the studio can make something I'd like to play perhaps. Yes, selfish.
As much as I love god of war. As much as I love kratos, his ending was god of war 3. I don't even look at ascension because I consider 1,2 and 3 the only games of the God of war trilogy, and among the greatest trilogy of gaming history. The way 3 ended was just so perfect. One of the finest endings for a character as I can imagine. I truly hope we get a completely different series set in different mythology. Or you know, maybe they revisit a true classic that deserves more than in got in heavenly sword.
@SKC_Diamond BUT how do you even know its gonna be more of the same? Its all rumours FFS! Dont get wet knickers off a screenshot and a vague quote from a animator. After all Uncharted 4 had Black flag art work, does that mean uncharted 4 is a assasins creed game? .... Does it eck!
It's a zero fact, click bait article .
I love God of War and Greek mythology has plenty more to offer, but at least in my opinion, not a lot of thing left for Kratos. As many people said I would like to see something new, but no Roman it would be the same with different names :/
Also I believe they should try a new IP, a complete new idea, no need for an angry dude that kills gods.
Ps. If they want a Greek theme game, they should do Zeus Adventure, like Larry Laffer, you have Zeus and try to find the irght women. Use the right transform, become a bull, rain, a swan etc to get laid!
I like greek mythology but come on, they do need a refresh and go someplace else. Egyptian or Scandinavian are just too good to pass.
@Bazza78 Well that told me...
I would like a GOW remaster.
Id love Norse Mythology. I think that would be a fabtastic setting as it's very under used as it is.
We won't get a new God Of War game, until they re-re-re-release the previous 2, the 2 PSP versions and re-release-re-release part 3 (again, a new one with one added thing). Then we'll get a new one, that's just a remaster of the previous 3 in one game. Isn't that how games are going for PS4 recently. Get ready, there will be a new Twisted Metal game coming soon, called...Twisted Metal Trilogy HD! Followed by Sly Cooper HD and then, coming to Playstation VR...Sports Champions HD and Eye Pet HD!
Why is this generation, just nothing but re-releases and remakes? Is the gaming industry out of ideas just like hollywood???
Everyone who nags on the site for having some personality needs to SHUT UP
I think the ending of 3 left it open for kratos to come back, just hopefully as some sort of NPC, be it mentor or villain. They did put a bit of effort into making his brother the possible anti-hero, maybe they're going to try and do the GOW series from his perspective?
C mon, this is not AC. Just changing the setting wont cut it for me. Let alone another remake.
Just let Santa Monica do something new. Just make sure it is better than the Order.
@Gamer83
For me Splatoon and The Wonderful 101 are some of the most original and interesting games this gen. I get your point but I cannot ignore these two gems.
Wow this piece is really bad so he worked on hydra and gorgon does this mean he can do anything else wow........ Come on stop posting this clickbait you sound like some analist we hear a lot about.
Shouldn't we wait to see what the game is first before we start judging.
@sinalefa Santa Monica didn't make The Order, if was Ready at Dawn.
@adf86
My point is that they need to learn from Ready at Dawn and release a better product than the Order if they go for a new IP.
@JLPick Exaggeration and negativity at its finest. No, this generation most certainly has not been "nothing but re-releases and remakes", unless every game that you, personally, don't like magically doesn't count.
@stevie85 Agreed.
A Northman who battles Tyr, Odin and Thor..
And giant wolves like Fenrir..
In the Lap of the gods.
@sinalefa I agree and to be fair Santa Monica were trying to make a new IP till Sony cancelled it.
The Order was great.
And give me Dead Space 4 while you're at it.
God of what, now? Never played em.
Do you guys think GOW, needs to ditch it's fixed camera angle gameplay this gen, to really move forward? I mean i love GOW,S camera but i don't really see how they can make visuals or gameplay that much better by using it on ps4.
Do you think GOW would work with something like Infamous ss gameplay camera?
@sinalefa I dunno. I think there's lots of mileage in the God of War gameplay blueprint, they just need new characters, new enemies, and new locations to refresh it all.
@Bazza78 Hmm. I'm fine with the fixed camera angle, personally. I'm not tired of the gameplay at all, really - it's just Greek mythology that I'm bored of. They've used it six times now... Time for a change.
@get2sammyb Agreed i'm fine with fixed camera too, I just wonder what santa monica could achieve with a more free roming GOW thats all. I mean it could be potentially the best thing ever.
New IP or a new protagonist, please. Never been a fan of Kratos.:/
Please not!! NOOOOOO
There is so much they can do creatively with a new ancient time period/ god thingy.
@WanderingBullet and yes: not more Kratos!! I like the games but I don't like him.
Sell the IP and Kratos to Microsoft, use the money to make an interesting and original game. Preferably not another generic, 'Really angry man kills again.'
I have not wanted another GOW ever since Sony made Santa Monica cancel their original PS4 project. If I were a games developer in these uncertain times, I would much rather be independent and have control over my own IP's. It can't be fun when you've been working on the same game series for for the best part of 15 years. Yes I know GOW1 came out in 2005, but with the development time it can't be far off that mark. Talk about stifling creativity Sony!
@EWolf I would something like that but with another character i know they are capable to do that i would love to see Nariko come back. The game was short but the story and characters where awsome. The ending would make it possible at least but i dont want to spoil the ending if you didn't play it short but awsome.
It's all just rumour and speculation at this point. However, since Platinum got involved with the genre, the God of War ship won't sail anymore. Even when Ascension came out a few years back it came across as really dated.
Personally I think we should all wait until we see more information before we form an opinions. I'd like to see them reboot the series with a new character and mythology as Kratos' story is done, and I fear any attempt to use him even more will be milking him. However if they can find a way to make a new story with him work well, I'm all for it.
