Many of you probably have the plot of Final Fantasy VII memorised, but Square Enix has hinted that the release's PlayStation 4 remake β which was announced earlier this week to rapturous response β could deviate from the original story. "We've announced an HD port version on the PS4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4," director Tetsuya Nomura told GameSpot. "You'll have this extremely, very, very pretty Final Fantasy VII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, why have the same exact game?"
The Final Fantasy VII lineup for the PS4 is very confusing, so before we progress, let's take a moment to clean things up: the HD port that Nomura's referring to is a direct conversion of the PC version of the PSone classic, while the remake is a complete reimagining of the 1997 smash built from the ground-up for Sony's new-gen machine. It's this latter title that could end up taking a slightly different narrative path. But do you want story elements to be tweaked, or are you hoping for an identical experience? I don't think they have any choice. Many of the events that happen in FFVII will seem weird and out of place if they're not being acted out by small blocky people. I'm fine with it as long as they don't bugger up any of the characters.
I honestly wouldn't mind the game being tweaked with new content and side quests, but I really don't feel like they should change the main story at all. I would also hate this to go the route of live action combat instead of the originals turn based.
FF7 was my favorite of all time FF games and if they would only have announced the port I would be getting that, but a chance to play FF7 in a new way with surprises is far more enticing to me. Cloud 2.0 is where my money will go, not saying I won't buy a used copy cheap of the port someday but for day 1 it will be FF7 Remake for me.
@ShogunRok Also I do not think Honeybee manor section would work the same way without the block characters lol
As long as it retains that Japanese vibe, and quirky sence of humour from the original and doesn't overly westernise (the addition of Ferarri as a character designer is a bit worrying) the game I'd be happy with changes.
On the one hand I want it to be exactly the same, but as @ShogunRok says really I appreciate that's probably not entirely workable since many of the gameplay elements, scenes and characters would just be impractical in a more realistic environment.
Of course the story should follow a very similar arc, I'd very much prefer we keep the ATB's and leaving the materia system alone would be nice too, however introducing new spells/weapons to deepen the system further would be good I suppose.
I think they will struggle to get Clouds character down in particular, as based on Advent Children they didn't portray him exactly how I would have thought.. He's somehow got to be quiet and withdrawn, and occasionally funny, without being sulky and emo. I can't imagine Advent Childrens Cloud telling Barret that he looks like a bear wearing a marshmallow.
Will Advent Children finally make sense?
I never played the first FFVII, couldn't handle the blockiness, but I enjoyed the movie. Hopefully the remake will still provide the background needed to enjoy the movie fully.
@kyleforrester87 I really hope we do not get emo cloud from Advent Children. I also hope Vincent isn't Dirge of Cerberus Vincent
Must haves - Same story, flesh out conversations a bit, take away the house monsters, add some extra content, Same music but real instruments, cross dressing.
Don't go here - Action fighting, new story, new characters, remove mini games, emo cloud.
Nice to have but not a deal breaker - Jump off train start, same bosses hd graphics, same summons but add a hidden one, Materia, put a card game in, Barrett to look Bad ass.
@kyleforrester87 yeah I agree cloud was a wise cracking bad ass up untill he got bis real memories bavk then he was more quiet and laid back. I didnt like his character in advent children or in the kindom hearts. He needs zack fairs personality, I mean thats whos personality and memories he had.
But yeah as much as I would love and exact remake of the game some stuff would be out of place. But i hope they can somehow fit all the interesting elements like the humor and mini games, or stuff like taking Barret on a date n stuff like that. Hell even keep the honey be and fort condor. But what they will do is just keep some nostalgic stuff like a honey be poster and such and rvamp the combat, the replace puzzles and mini games with stealth segments and the looking in a room to find a key dynamic.
But you know what we are getting a ff7 remake and regardless if it is complete remake . or re-imagining of how the game would be made in present day, I will enjoy it cause i love final fantasy and especially the characters of 7
Question for Nomura is, with this new remake announced, does anyone really care about or need a rerelease of the PC version?
@BladeRider I'd laugh if the only change was getting rid of Cait-sith and Yuffie, and everything else was exactly the same
Im cool with it, im hoping they give a Complete FF7 experience from Crisis Core clear through Advent Children.
@Mrskinner If they go hack n slash, I'm out. Maybe it's because of the era I grew up in, but I like each encounter being a game of chess, not a button mashing frenzy.
@sinalefa Yes, I for one, very much so. Especially if they are making changes for the remake as I want a old school FF7 experience that doesn't melt my eyes when playing it on a screen larger than 32 inches.
@themcnoisy I loved those house baddies Did tons of griding with Cloud and Aeris on those, wound up getting all Clouds limit-breaks before leaving Midgar as a result (Omnislash aside, of course). Was great using Meteorain on Rufus.
@kyleforrester87
But that's exactly my point. Forget the PC rerelease and just make the remake without changing things.
@glassmusic The ATB of FF7 was perfect for me, as you say it gave you time to plan a strategy for the battle and not rely on mashing.
@sinalefa Ah I see what you mean. Not sure it would work as a straight up copy though for the reasons Shogun mentioned and also in my very first post above. If you think about some of the occurrences in FF7 they just aren't all practical for a modern remake.
Ff7 was flawless. When they remake this everything should be left untouched besides the graphics..even the poor translations should stay intact
Wow, this game made me register on this website...Long live to PlayStation!
Told ya's, but nobody wanted to listen: well except @kyleforrester87, he knew
From 17 hours ago:
"Do we know for sure though FF7 remake will be faithful? Will they include every minor characters full storyline or just the main story?
Will they even keep it menu turn based or go action based like 13?
I'm still super exvited, but w/ what little was shown yesterday some apprehension is creeping in."

@Sparkus Welcome - see you on the forums too, I hope
If you're going to completely remake something there are going to be tweaks here and there. The battle system is going to be the big issue. I think they have two options. One for those who want the turn based system, another for those who don't care for turn based at all. That might be hard to pull off though, and if they can't do that and get the game done in a timely manner, they better stick with turn based or the fans, who this is being made for and who have been begging for this for a long time, will be furious.
As long as they don't make any major departures from the overall plot, I won't be too put out. But based on some elements of Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, I still think there is cause for concern. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
One thing I can't wait for is to see how on earth they manage to fit the entire FFVII world in, with the overworld map and airship / chocobo traversal etc, but with current gen graphics. Will they construct the world in a contemporary open world manner, or will they stick to the more basic overworld maps of old? I honestly can't actually fathom how they will make it work, but I can't wait to find out!
I think combat should be tweaked. I think turn based is such a dated mechanic that needs to go away for good. I'll still play the remake regardless, but it would be nice. Mixing up some story elements wouldn't be bad either.
@kyleforrester87 @sinelafa A prime example of a scene that I'm not sure would work the same with modern graphics, and would probably require tweaking, is the b*tch-slap contest with Tifa & Scarlet on the cannon at Junon (as well as the Honey Bee Manor scene as somebody already mentioned).
There's something comedic and light-hearted about those scenes in the original, which I think would take on a whole lot darker/weirder tone if played out again with realistic graphics.
The scene where Cloud gets "molested" in a bath tub will probably have to go.
Cloud falling a mile to be cushioned by some flowers
Hiding under the rolling stones in temple of ancients
Dressing up as a Shinra soldier to march
Jumping up to the top of Junon with a dolphin via the use of a whistle
All scenes that'd need tweaking or just changing entirely to work in my opinion. I'd be sad to see them go in a sense but as long as it's handled well I can live with it.
I think that they should implement both a turn base system and a action system for battle cause people are gonna cry either way. just have the option at the beginning of the game.
I think that they should implement both a turn base system and a action system for battle cause people are gonna cry either way. just have the option at the beginning of the game.
And this is why they never wanted to do a remake. One announcement and all the crying, it's not the same, it's different, it will NEVER live up to the expectations of the fans. After it comes out everyone will be crying that they ruined the best game of all time, which everyone's played like a thousand times, how many times do you want the same game to come out? I think they are smart to change it, but retarded to make it, if you want ff 7, then play the original one, if you want something different, then play the new one. Here comes the crying
@SeahorseLegs No ones really moaning or crying as I see it. Most reasonable people would see the need for at least a few changes. 20 years of progression in games development does that.
@kyleforrester87 Thank you!
@SeahorseLegs
Nobody is crying at all.
I'm not really crying about anything, too early to do so anyway. I wouldn't mind some changes; like those that link the games better together, some translation fixes like "This guy are sick" for example, there are likely scenes that can be written more coherently and some scenes will likely have to be remade since I can't imagine them working out with realistic graphics like mentioned before.
Where am I truly concerned is the characters. While I don't exactly hate the current stoic, mopey Cloud and pure as the driven snow, demure Aerith. I vastly prefer "Let's mosey!" Cloud and the openly flirtatious, "I'll rip them off!" Aerith more so. Her death felt more poignant to me because she seemed to be a real person, not some messianic martyr character archetype.
Now I'm scared.
SE is not exactly a pioneer in story telling lately.
Keen to see the 'bad' translations left as they were originally. Good memories.
As pointed out SE arent great story tellers anymore, maybe leave the plot alone.
Biggest question is going to be turn based or active battle. Used to love turn based back in the day, but after playing FFX again, I was reminded how annoying random turn based battles can be.
I'll still happily play FF7 Remake regardless of what changes they make to it, this is gonna be so awesome .
Personally, I would like FF7:Remake to re-use the turn-based combat system since recent FF games were all fast pace action.
I'm definitely tempted. Haven't played FF before and this sounds like a fantastic start.
As many people have said above, certain things will come across differently in a more realistic graphical style, like the Honeybee Inn. Still, there are plenty of Japanese games that have this kind of visual style, as opposed to the super-deformed style, that still have really weird and crazy parts, like Resonance of Fate. Also, there's also live action comedy made with actual humans that has weird and wacky scenes like the Honeybee Inn or crossdressing Cloud, so really it shouldn't matter. Midgar is dirty and grimy, and people see that and assume the whole game will have that tone.
I think a good way of approaching it would be to think in terms of adding, not subtracting. Don't remove the Chocobo Ranch and Midgar Zolom (Midgardsormr) but maybe do make it so there's an extra little questline based around the ranch before you can get a chocobo. There's going to be a rhythm in millions of players' heads, now we go to Kalm, now we go to the ranch, now the giant snake bastard... Adding extra stuff between that will be exciting, removing it will make people feel like they've lost something.
i don't mind them making some tweaks here and there, as long as the changes aren`t to big. how would you guys feel if they added in the storyline of advent children in some way?
@Sasarai She dies?!?!?
I can live with some story/setting changes just please leave the battle system alone or at least leave it in as an option

Sounds like the honey bee inn will be staying....but the battle system will be changing...
Ten bucks says the player will be able to save Aerith in this version.
