PS4 PlayStation 4 Firmware Update v2.50

There's one thing that you should know about running a PlayStation website: you never, ever get a rest. After a long, hard day at the office – moving into the 14th hour now – this author was looking forward to some sleep, but alas, the platform holder has confirmed firmware update v2.50. There's, er, no rest for the wicked. Fortunately, a lot of this information has already leaked, so it won't take us long to run through the new features of 'Yukimura', which is what the platform holder's dubbing this new update. It's named after an ancient samurai warrior, for those not up on their Japanese history. As for a release date – well, the manufacturer's simply saying "soon" for now. Here are the features that have made the cut.

Accessibility Options

This may not sound very exciting on the surface, but this will be a game changer for some. The new accessibility options will allow you to remap the DualShock 4 controller, while also including tons of small improvements, such as text enlarging, colour inversion, zoom, and much more. This will hopefully enable a few more people to enjoy the PS4, which is fantastic.

Dailymotion Video Upload

For all three people who use Dailymotion, you'll now be able to upload your gameplay clips directly to the video hosting service via the Share button. We're not entirely sure who this will appeal to, but hey, more options is always good, right?

Facebook Friends Search

This is nifty: you'll now be able to find your buddies more easily on the PS4 by linking your Facebook account to the console. It'll then search your Facebook friends for associated PlayStation Network profiles, and recommend that you add anyone that you haven't already to your list of gaming contacts.

Remote Play at 60 Frames-Per-Second

Remote Play is amazing, but previously, it was limited to 30 frames-per-second. This will change with firmware update v2.50, as if you've got a fast enough connection, you'll be able to stream 60 frames-per-second footage to your PlayStation Vita or PS Vita TV. Share Play will also support this option, allowing you to pass the controller to your pals, without compromising the experience.

Sub-Account Upgrade

It's already possible to upgrade your sub-account to a master account online, but PS4 firmware update v2.50 will add the feature to the console. You'll need to be 18 to use the option, but this will ultimately enable you to access all of the functionality of the PlayStation Network, without any restrictions.

Suspend/Resume

The biggie for this update, Suspend/Resume will allow you to put your PS4 into Rest Mode – without quitting your game. This means that you won't have to wait for the title to boot when you power your console back up – heck, you won't even necessarily need to save. Sony promised this feature at the next-gen system's reveal event over two years ago, so it's perhaps long overdue.

Trophy Tweaks

They may be one of the most important parts of the PlayStation experience, but Trophies often tend to get overlooked in these updates. Fortunately, the achievements system will get some much needed attention in firmware update v2.50. For starters, you'll be able to delete game profiles where you've earned 0% of the trinkets, but there'll also be a new automated feature that will take a screenshot when you unlock a gong. Extra sorting options will also be added, too.

What do you make of this little lot, then? Which new features are getting you hot under the collar? Are there any particular improvements that you're annoyed have been overlooked? Let us know in the comments section below.
