Re: Final Fantasy X Was the 'Ultimate Perfection' of the Series, Says Dragon Quest Creator

FF1 is my favorite. I replay it pretty often. It was the first RPG I ever played and still one of the very few FF games that let you make your own characters (which was unique at the time).

FF10 is a close 4th for me, I think.

FF1 -> FF8 -> FF7 and then the rest were... not as fun. I never played 2-6 though, and because FF8 is my second favorite I am sure it makes my opinion invalid (but people slept hard on that game. Despite its tedium in the beginning it was pretty amazing on the technical side).

Re: Blizzard Once Again Shuts Down World of Warcraft Console Talk

I can't imagine how they'd manage skill use properly for WoW. FF14 did a great job of providing console players ways to access all their skills, and maybe WoW could do something similar, but I'd fear it'd be too clunky.

I'd go back to playing every expansion if it were on console. I was a hardcore player for ten years when it released and I would definitely never do that again for any game.

Re: Ninja Gaiden 4 (PS5) - A Bloodthirsty Action Game Ripped Straight from the PS3 Era

symmetrian

I played for a few hours last night and have to say this is the best Ninja Gaiden has ever felt, to me. It feels far more accessible in its difficulty than it has in the past, with an option to replay the battle that killed you rather than going back to the last checkpoint when you go down. Loading times could be better to facilitate this, but they're not too bad.

The training mode itself is pretty addictive, though my one complaint is that I can't fill the training room with enemies. Combat in this game is almost never 1v1 so practicing that way isn't terribly helpful.

As for story: who cares? Ninja goes brrrrrrrrr

Graphics are sharp, runs at a nice 60fps on my PS5 Pro. Environments might be boring, but I have no idea as they go by fast and movement is a blast in this game - also, environments have been boring as ***** to me in every Ninja Gaiden game, so why would I care now?

Re: PS6 Release Date Touted for 2027, Cheaper But Less Powerful Than Next Xbox

The PS5 era has taught me one thing - that Sony gives zero ***** about supporting new generations of hardware, being very content to ship games for older consoles to the newer one with very little content actually tailor made to support new hardware. In my opinion, the PS5 generation didn't really start until maybe two years ago, but they're going to try to push new hardware again in another 2 years? No, Sony, you don't get to keep ***** with your fans/players. Show me you actually care and maybe I will. PS: Demon's Souls is still the best looking game on the platform.

Re: Video: These 20 Games Have the Best Graphics on PS5

symmetrian

Love that Demon Souls is on here. Given that it was a LAUNCH PS5 game, it deserves far more credit. It STILL looks better than most games on the system, and that's a huge achievement at launch on a console.

Also, someone please give them another game to remake. Like Bloodborne. Please.

Re: GTA 6 Trailer 2 Is Finally Here, PS5 Graphics Are Jaw-Dropping

I have to thank this comment section for being the one to finaly convince me to stop trying to engage with the gaming community. The amount of doomsaying and whining and assumptions is just so sad to see.
Yeah, it's going to run at 5 fps and be a slideshow, of course! It's never going to come out, because the biggest game of ever got delayed once. Online will ruin the single player, because that's what's happened before right guys? Not worth more than $70 - that's a take! Of course, it's going to be $100 because speculation is fun!

Of course, this is what comment sections are for, yeah? So cool, enjoy that. I'm hitting eject.

@KillerBoy

While I agree wholeheartedly, the last one was so full of microstransaction ***** and the worst costume unlock process imaginable that I don't know if I care anymore.

DOA used to be my favorite fighting game. The animations and the smooth interactions with relatively easy-to-use counters - and in hardcore you could even co-op in fights with tag team. It was a such a promising franchise despite the "she kicks high" *****.

Re: Sony's AI Leak Reveals a Creepy Sci-Fi Future PS5 Gamers Don’t Necessarily Want

symmetrian

I never thought they'd use this sort of tech for talking to a protagonist because who cares about that? But using tech like this to produce responses from NPCs that make them feel alive and responsive could be a game changer for large scale RPGs and MMOs. If they use straight AI generated audio then that sucks quite a bit - it would be nice if they could at least pay real voice actors and use digitized versions for the AI.

While they mention in the article that it sounds artificial, has anyone talked to ChatGPT lately? It sounds pretty conversational and not very awkward, so it's not like it can't already be done.

Re: Ghost of Yotei Dev Eager to Push Creatively and Technically with Anticipated PS5 Sequel

symmetrian

I'm excited for this game only because the way the first game was built was phenomenal. The lack of useless UI elements, natural ways of indicating where to go, being led places by animals appearing in the environment... Add in how absolutely gorgeous it was, especially with the physics and the way they affected leaves and such.

Just loved the game for all of its parts and how they came together to create a truly action-forward and cinematic experience.

All that and I get to play as a female protagonist? It's a day 1 purchase for me.

Re: Xbox Plots a Catalogue of AI Games, And It'll Probably Use Tech on PS5

symmetrian

There's so much talk about, and work being put into, generative AI and although I find it interesting, it's likely a long way from where it would need to be in order for it to be worth much.

I'm far more interested in the use of AI to add dynamic interaction to characters in games, which I haven't heard anyone discussing. The ability to define a character's traits and have AI effectively respond in-character to any prompt could make a huge impact on games, especially in the RPG space, and it's a technology that is essentially ready right now.

Re: Bad Handling of Demon's Souls PS3 Meant Sony Missed Out on Dark Souls Publishing

symmetrian

@thefourfoldroot1

That's not how Souls games work.

While I do agree that they are opaque and that they are not for everyone, they are not nearly as tedious as you make it sound. It is NOT about rote memorization and knowing every move you have to make, it is about adapting and overcoming, and the entire system is built to support that.

To my point: you rarely really have to fight anything in "Souls" games other than bosses, and bosses often have a trick to them (especially in Demon's Souls) that make them almost trivial.

Yes, it does take repetition to learn, and I get if that isn't for everyone, but it is not just for "masochists" and it does not force memorization or perfect execution (otherwise I would not have completed every single Souls game).

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Failed Because It Wasn't Live Service, EA CEO Seems to Suggest

symmetrian

So it wasn't the tonal shift, badly designed companions, the jarring change art style, and the need to completely re-write the game from a live service to a single player RPG that were the problem, it's customers that obviously only want shared universes and huge endless games with Microtransactions.

Why do studios seem to be completely oblivious to the state of their own industry and what the buzz is currently? I get that game design decisions have to be made with the idea that they will still be relevant in 3-5 years, but this is a modern take from a current dev in today's landscape.

Re: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 a Technical Powerhouse on PS5 Pro, Says Digital Foundry

symmetrian

I absolutely adored the first game, even though I had a lot of trepidation getting into it (it sounded too hardcore, too hard, to janky). What I found was an absolute gem that I sunk many, many hours into and ultimately didn't even finish because I didn't want to. I wanted to have endless adventures, killing bandits and hawking their gear.
I'm very excited for the second game. I know what they can do and how good it was when it was still a bit wonky. I can't imagine how much I will enjoy it with a little streamlining and polish.
Warhorse studios should be very proud, getting name-checked now with the quality of their games alongside CD Project Red and Larian.

Re: $100 for GTA 6 Is 'A Bridge Too Far' Even for Rockstar, Says Analyst

symmetrian

I don't think we'll see another price hike until there are new systems that impress enough that people are willing to pay. PS6 could be that console, but who knows?

Even then, consoles were supposed to be the budget option for gaming. If they price consoles and games higher than their PC counterparts, the migration will be swift and brutal.

Re: 10+ Hour DLC Packs Grow Assassin's Creed Shadows After Launch

symmetrian

Assassin's Creed should have been spun off for the latest entries (Origins+) because the gameplay is so different. I used to love Assassin's Creed but this new style of game just doesn't do it for me. I loved the choreographed feeling of the fights in the originals. I remember spending hours in Assassin's Creed (1) just ragdolling MFers down stairs. The animations back then were second to none.

Now every time I try an Assassin's Creed game I get about an hour or two in and have no desire to continue.
