I think it is likely at some point that boxes will die off, yes. It will not be for quite a while yet. But I think there will be a time when everything will go to your phone. Everything else does already, so I foresee a day when true video game experiences do too. I'm not talking mobile crap. I'm talking, you buy a full retail game on your phone. Maybe it has a case that you can snap it into for buttons for handheld titles. And for retail titles it streams directly to your TV, and you have controllers for that. The game companies will be selling you the phone cases and controllers and will be running, for lack of a better term, the app stores. Phones will hold terabytes of data at that point so it's not hard to imagine and it creates an instant handheld and TV device, like the NX is supposedly doing, but with a device nearly 100% of people already own.
Oh wow. This day ten years ago I was just a few days shy of graduating high school. It was probably the day of the prom or thereabouts as the kids have just had theirs two days ago, blowing up my Facebook feed with pics of it. It's hard to believe it's been ten years since THAT. I didn't start following the whole Final Fantasy Versus XIII/FFXV saga until a few years down the road. Maybe six or seven years ago. That still seems like yesterday.
@Kage_88 I completely agree with you, but I just want to say that @Sir_JBizzle is right - I have a Wii U, but I'm also about to purchase my third 3DS. (I got one at launch. then got an XL about a year and a half later, and that Pokemon N3DS was too tempting!)
@Gamer83 They do seem to be able to bring in the third parties on their handhelds, though how much of that is being the only real option is up for debate. At the start of every console generation I hold my breath and think, "Don't do it! Don't alienate the third parties again!" But it's been a decade and a half so I don't think they are coming back for the consoles, yeah... But hope springs eternal. And if the NX is a hybrid the third parties may have no choice. Or they will flee entirely. It remains to be seen.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi It's a very long story but my internet name has been "Lobster" since I was 15, which was 13 years ago. The very, very short version is that it is after one of the very first viral videos from a website called albinoblacksheep; the video was called "Lobster Magnet." You can still look up the video today. It's the first thing that comes up when you Google those two words together.
And if you told me at 15 that at 28 I would still be going by the name I gave myself after a silly video on the internet I would not believe you.
And yet you would not believe how many copies of this game I sell while working at GameStop. I firmly believe that this game is bad because Telltale knew it did not have to be good. What a shame, too, as I was really looking forward to it when it was announced.
@Gamer83 Oh, I totally agree. A console with Nintendo's first party line up AND solid third party support? Sony and Microsoft would be screwed. Especially if they actually advertised the damn thing. I'm a Nintendo fangirl at heart and it pains me to see how they are handling things now. That said it has given me the opportunity to play Playstation and that's been wonderful. I mean no matter what I wasn't getting The Last Guardian or FFXV on a Nintendo console anyway.
But yeah these are more and more global times, with each passing month really, and to ignore that is to see, well, only ten million consoles sold in three years, for example.
@Gamer83 Well Nintendo is always going to have focus on Japan largely because they are a (relatively) small Japanese company. I think whatever happens they will always continue to try to sell consoles in their native land... assuming the NX is some kind of console, which I believe either Iwata or Kimishima confirmed in the one or two sentences that have been spoken about it. What form that console will take is anyone's guess, of course. It would be interesting if it was something more mobile than a traditional console. That could certainly breathe life into Japan's market, considering mobile game sales are up.
I think the promising line up of PS4 games, especially of the type the Japanese are interested in, plus Nintendo's 2016 Wii U line up (which is basically Zelda, Star Fox, and Pokken, but those are all games Japan likes, so there you go) will at least salvage the situation for 2016. If the NX launches in 2016, no matter what it is, that will help, because early adopters in all territories are going to buy it and Japan will be no different.
Basically I don't think this year will be a repeat of last year, though by how much is hard to say. The PS4 has a lot of work to do, but it can handle it.
BB-8 was totally flipping the bird. My entire (full) theater read it that way and we can't all be wrong. That was super funny btw. I have only seen it once but I plan to see it at least one more time.
The only Star Wars game I have bought this year is Battlefront and while it's fine it doesn't live up to how much entertainment I got out of Star Wars games in the good old days. My N64 came bundled with Episode I Racer, anybody remember that one?
It was Fallout 4 for me, no question. It sucked up the most of my time of any game on this list by far. But second would have to be Everybody's Gone to the Rapture because I loved the story and the atmosphere and the way it made you care about the people in the town. I haven't played The Witcher 3 yet. I'm waiting for, ironically, a GOTY edition.
Happy New Year everybody! Whenever somebody has a question about Playstation, I always send them here. "Yes, pushsquare.com, that's p-u-s-h...." Haha hopefully I can continue to do so for many new years to come!
@rjejr No Man's What? Never heard of it! Of course I completely forget about games if they aren't shoved down my throat every seven minutes.
Definitely looking forward to 2016! It's shaping up to be a very big year industry-wide! My PS4 has just been picking up steam as time goes by and then with the possible launch of NX I think we may have an epic three-way clash of titans on our hands once again.
I want to add that strategy guides were probably a great way, back in the 90s at least, in their heyday, to get so-called "reluctant readers" reading. That was also the era before "young adult" literature and the booming kid's books market that we have today. Strategy guides, Goosebumps, and Animorphs books were pretty much all that were aimed at kids in the 90s. Also Baby-sitter's Club if you were a girl. It was pre-Harry Potter, even.
I love strategy guides. Especially the older Nintendo Power ones! Some of those were great reads. I remember reading the Banjo-Kazooie strategy guide and just laughing my butt off when I was a kid. I've picked up a lot of older guides and look through them from time. Probably my favorite is the Earthbound guide, which I still have the scratch and sniff stickers in. And for Christmas I got the Conker's Bad Fur Day guide!
When I was a kid I bought strategy guides for every game I played because I loved reading them and I still have most of them, but I was looking through one of the Pokemon Red and Blue guides I had the other day (I bought like three or four) and it was inaccurate! What a ripoff, haha. They knew we didn't have any other choice back in the day but today's kids can use the internet. Which is what I mostly use when I need actual help in a game these days. Better and more efficient than a dead tree, but so much less character.
Out of this list, I'm interested in Far Cry Primal, Final Fantasy XV, Firewatch, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda, No Man's Sky, Ratchet & Clank, Star Ocean 5, The Last Guardian, and The Witness.
Ow, my wallet. D:
Seriously, what an amazing year coming up for Sony. My Wii U, otoh, is never gonna see the light of day it looks like (except for Zelda(?) and Star Fox).
Good on Microsoft this week! They sold well over double the Xbones! I had no idea that the Japanese played Halo at all. Is anybody else weirdly proud of them for not being bottom of the chart for once?
Probably about 70% of the stuff they presented was stuff that I was interested in. But I watched it after it aired and it took me almost four hours to get through because they way they presented it was so bad. So, to sum up: I'm excited about the content, but the way it was delivered could have been vastly improved.
Hey, as a Nintendo fan I am just saying this is better than Nintendo's E3 2015 and subsequent no Nintendo Directs. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. It was better than nothing.
This game looks really cool but rewatching the conference footage I figured out why I liked it - it reminds me of Monster Hunter. Anyone else see the resemblance?
P.S. Good luck with Halo! My best friend manages a GameStop so she is stuck doing the midnight launch. I also work at (a different) GameStop but I'm a lowly seasonal employee who already worked today so I got out of the midnight deal. It's gonna be crazy! I know everybody is excited! It sounds like you won't be going to a brick and mortar store for yours, though.
For me first is SNES of course. Second is interestingly Wii U at this point for the same reason many said the Dreamcast before - ratio of good games to bad ones. There are just so many good games on the Wii U. It's a high quality machine. I think that must be a feature of consoles that fail in that way.
PS2 though is my number three. It was my first console that lured me away from Camp Nintendo! Before the PS2 everything I had ever played was Nintendo and I knee-jerk hated anything that wasn't Nintendo. But I was a teenager by the time the PS2 came out and I could afford two consoles (I also had the GameCube that gen) (which is a very close fourth) and I decided to put aside my differences and see what all the hype was about - and I'm really glad I did!
There is no way in hell you'll ever convince me to buy an Xbox though unless it literally creates money for me or something!
@Gamer83 Why on Earth would people show up to do that? I'm mostly on NL and I find this annoying more than anything else. I think all three should be transparent. But I guess if you are MS and being beat that badly by Sony I wouldn't want to share it either. It doesn't matter for Nintendo because everybody already knows at this point but I think MS still thinks they have a chance at salvaging the situation. Nintendo obviously doesn't.
Oh wow, these are all hideous on the white one, which is what I have. Not appealing at all. Then again I got the white PS4 in the first place because it's so sleek. Adding a faceplate to that ruins the aesthetic.
Unless they came out with something as awesome as this, then I might reconsider:

I built my gaming PC for about $1000 and it's fantastic, much better than my PS4, but my PS4 is not meant to compete with it. I love my PS4 for what it does and I think it has legs for at least another four or five years. Even the Wii U has legs for another three or four.

Here's the tweet with some added interpretation by me in brackets as to what I think he was ACTUALLY saying:
"Nintendo's NX may work with smartphones, PCs and [it may] even rival consoles such as PlayStation4."
@get2sammyb Valid or no?
