Re: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (PS5) - Globe-Trotting Adventure Just Got Even Better on PS5

Ravix

For anyone worried about first person or the gameplay:

The gameplay in Uncharted is one of the absolute worst parts of Uncharted, and yet it's a great series of games. But the platforming and puzzling here in first person is at least on par with Uncharted, and in some cases it is better.

The combat is far more satisfying and crunchy in this game, too. Where Uncharted is a bit like an arcade rush mode.

And doing something simple really well is not necessarily a negative. They have done a really good job with the game and it's a really well implemented first person triumph.

It's also satisfyingly well designed level by level and leaves some things to the player to figure out or try themselves rather than just following a marker all the time.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 576

@Northern_munkey yeah, it's impossible to legitimately read a green on a tv screen with everything switched off all the time so a little more balanced than the extreme mode. I don't use the guide lines on shots either, don't know if that's in tour or not, but either way it's only a preference that I don't like the blue line. I know I tweaked a few things so I can use more realistic draw and fades, which means I can draw it well but absolutely cannot fade it. My thumb just can't get the action for a fade right at all πŸ˜‚ but it adds a realism, and I quite like hitting the odd atrocious shot to keep it interesting. And if a fade is the only logical play it is always worth the risk.

I think I've got it installed on the Pro actually, so I'll add you if I get around to playing EA PGA again soon

@PlatinumMikey @Northern_munkey

I'll have a look and see if I've still got it installed anywhere. Think I played it a little earlier this year, definitely played it a good amount last year. Could never get in to the 2K ones either.

What settings do you use by the way? as I'm somehow worse at it on easy basic settings, but not bad with a hybrid 'almost max difficulty' set up. I did try a few online with all indicators off and no zoom-in etc as well. But offline I usually have it as close to that as possible but with zoom-in enabled to save time not having to spend too long studying the course map to plot my way around πŸ˜…

@Northern_munkey @PlatinumMikey

Well, that was surely something. I love psychology in sports, and to see that was something special. The sheer amount of times he would have been thinking "oh no. I've f***ed it all up again" and to still stuff those thoughts down and play some absolutely bananas shots when he needed to do something. And doing that same thing over and over again all day as everyone watches, analyses, cheers and groans. An exhausting mental challenge.

Plus, it's great to see history!

First time i've seen Γ…berg lose the plot a bit, too. But if he is going to compete every year at the Masters, he will be fine.

And I must say, I quite enjoyed seeing Dechambeau wonder why hitting iron shots as hard as humanly possible wasn't really working for him. Can't chip it from a water hazard mate πŸ‘ almost like golf karma finally caught up with him

Re: PS5's Death Stranding 2 Will Become a Visual Novel to Get You Through Its Most Difficult Parts

Ravix

I'm not sure if the boss battles in DS1 were hard, as such. But they could be incredibly awkward mechanically, a little tedious and not necessarily that much fun 😬

Loved the game though. If it was a full cinematic boss fight I'd almost be tempted to do it just to see what it's like! It's a game that doesn't necessarily need fighting mechanics anyway, as the walking, BT avoidance and visualy/audibly epic moments are plenty to make it a good game.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 576

Ravix

@Northern_munkey cheers. Enjoy the round.

Has to be said Saturday was a spectacle and a half. 6 3's to start by McIlroy, Justin Rose seemingly getting flustered, I really don't think the pairing helped because Bryson is an... aquired taste. Scottie still not quite at it. And Sunday set up to be box office after the Dechambeau putt at 18 (how is his putting style even legal with 3 points of contact bracing up against his arm πŸ˜…) with the Rory and Bryson pairing I'm sure the TV networks dreamt of.

I can see those 2 taking each other out, if their is such a thing in golf. If it ends up about a battle between them and a bit of a pantomime someone could quietly sneak ahead before you know it as mistakes are shared between them. Scheffler, Shane, Aberg or Rose shooting 6 under could make it interesting if that does happen. Conners might quietly go about it, but it will be tough. If he putts a bit tentatively anyway he might have to hole out a few times to make up for Sunday nerves exaggerating that aspect of his game.

Who've you got?

McIlroy will need nerves the like of which we've never seen to ignore the circus that follows Bryson. I'm almost tempted to say he will win by 5 or end up fighting him πŸ˜‚

Re: Marathon a 'Premium', Paid for Game on PS5, But It's Not $70

Ravix

Haven't watched any trailers, nor do I care to, but what I will say is it would be nice if Sony did a deal where PS Plus subscribers get x amount off and they have it as maybe Β£25 digitally just to encourage people and make it seem like they are offering something worth getting behind. And if people like it you can keep offering content on Plus to keep people subscribed.

Making a positive impression with stuff like this can make or break games with the casual market. I know a lot of people who would definitely try it at a certain price. September is a bit close to what I assume will be the yearly EA FC/Fifa release though, earlier would have given it room to breathe in the live service/multiplayer market.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 576

Ravix

@Northern_munkey good stuff. It's hard to not expect Scheffler to win as robotic as he is, but I quite like seeing him lose the plot a bit more this year. He is basically just a month or two behind last year so he will surely be in top form for the middle part of the season. A vulnerable Scheffler makes for more entertainment though, so I'm hoping he still falters a little for now.

You can almost see the demons lurking over Rory. I can't ever imagine him being in contention and his mind not wandering to all that pressure. It's a big mental hurdle, and all it takes is one missed putt at the wrong time. If he gets over that it has to be commended though. If he can birdie those tougher holes while others struggle, and limit his mistakes he could run away with it. He should be totally able to do that on this course but it's unlikely due to all the mental stuff.

Looking at it now, it might only take a couple of solid days for Rose to do it. It really depends the type of players that have the inevitable low scores on one of the days. I can see Shane having one great day and one bang average or below average day, and even that might have him up there. Aberg could lock in and easily shoot 4 under twice and maybe push it lower if he's up there on Sunday and that round is going that way.

Fleetwood needs a new putter, ball, technique, something. He's absolutely mad for not trying something new. At the moment I'd not want him on the Ryder Cup team with the amount of putts he doesn't make.

The grouping of Rose and DeChambeau today... that's going to be... different.

@Northern_munkey could be πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί dominance at the Masters. It's the evening when it's going to get interesting too, so you might have to have words and put the rally off just this once.

I had a sneaky bet on Aaron Rai to win, and after 9 holes or so I was thinking, man I'm good at this πŸ˜‚

And in the PGA in general I think Rai and Bhatia (Impressed me last year and I hope he gets on the US Ryder cup team to see how he holds up there) are good tips for a sneaky outside chance major or Fed Ex cup win over the next few years. A lot of great new talent with calm heads are emerging since everyone f***ed off to the retirement league though.

Ravix

@JB_Whiting I tried all 3, I liked the RT specular reflections in quality and had no issue with any judder at all. I will be moving up to Balanced when those effects are included with PSSR, however. If all goes smoothly.

Image quality and graphics mean more to me than frames in console gaming usually, and I can still happily play games in 60, 40 or 30, or unlocked 80/90/120 fps without the transistion seeming too weird. But I will always make sure they look and feel right to me beforehand game by game basis, as some games are better at some things than others. Usually I'd play AC in 60 since Valhalla, but this time the 30 was fine with the added effects. Just before this I was playing KCD2 in unlocked between 55and85fps with VRR πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Yep, an OLED Ex panel. (I'm saying panel slightly toungue in cheek, because people do like to talk about panels, those who are interested in these things, anyway πŸ˜›)

Re: PS6 Can't Rely on Cutting-Edge Graphics, Sony Must 'Change Its Way of Thinking'

Ravix

Time for the new dawn of great physics and weighty gameplay! But we must keep pushing detail in games that benefit from truly immersive worlds. I'd say that open worlds don't need to get bigger though, they could be scaled back to become more dense. And some trickery with inside/outside spaces to keep things moving as we get faster and faster read speeds to deal with once impossible transitions that could make that possible.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Looks Solid But the Many PS5, PS4 Ports Won't Spook Sony Yet

Ravix

@RoomWithaMoose yeah, it very much depends on the games that will be played on it. I think a lot of people will get buyers remorse if they pull the trigger early and then realise they don't play the types of games now available. And if they do play those type of games, then there is many ways to play those games already.

If you are fully part of the in-house Nintendo game ecosystem it will also probably be worth waiting for some more games to be available (of that type) Whereas something like upgrading to a PS5 from PS4, you upgrade and the third party games you are already interested in are coming out on the platform endlessly anyway so the lack of first party doesn't matter as much because of the sheer volume of choice available.

But if you love Mario and Animal Crossing, is Fromsoft going to make a replacement for that while you wait.... No they are not πŸ˜… but those games you already play won't suddenly become crap on the Switch 1.

It makes it very interesting to see how much the casual gamer goes for it right away, beyond the impulse buys (Praise to them for calling it Switch 2 to help with that), and how many will wait and think about whether they really need it to play party games and casual platformers.

No doubt enthusiasts will be all over it, regardless.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Looks Solid But the Many PS5, PS4 Ports Won't Spook Sony Yet

Ravix

Parents. If your kids want some of these older games and a switch 2 for Christmas, you'd be better of just getting a second hand PS5 and a massive bundle of games. Or a new PS5 and a massive bundle of second hand games. Or a new PS5 and a massive bundle of new games on sale.

If the Switch is becoming a proper console console it is going to be much cheaper to go Sony. Which is crazy to say, but it looks to be the reality.

Re: Poll: PS5 Fans, Are You Sold on the Nintendo Switch 2?

Ravix

I'm not the target audience. I didn't watch the stream. I won't watch the stream. I will find out about it eventually. But I like to upgrade for the type of games I play, and Switch 2 would still be a downgrade console compared to a PS5 Pro regardless.

I might get baited into trying a super upgraded new Legend of Zelda game whenever they make a "next gen" one of those. But I'd end up regretting bothering, most likely πŸ˜…

I'll come from leftfield. A cure would prevent new infection, yes, but it still wouldn't prevent you from getting your neck ripped out by those already infected. Or killed as a result of the war to control that cure that will break out between the many factions that would still want power.

People won't ever give up power just because a solution to a universal problem is found. C*nts won't suddenly become hippies. And infected won't suddenly not want to rip you to shreds.

"Every odd job and bounty will provide the coin she needs for her journey."

I really hope that this is actually as written. I want the in game economy to be integral to the struggle. It's not often games get it right. Taking on a contract to make sure you can survive and thrive, rather than the kind of gamey upgrade path in GoT which was based on opening pots and collecting scraps of material mindlessly as you sprint over pick-ups and bamboo plants and then holding x in a menu to simply level up an item.

Limiting wealth and giving a real in-game reason to take on a quest really helps games with a functional world. Rather than just hoovering up quests simply because they are there and it's a game, you feel more a part of the journey.

Re: Don't Forget About the New Game from One of GTA's Most Important People

@lazarus11 the soundtrack to Mafia 3 is next level good. I thought I didn't really like 60's music until I played that game (it's all Beatles this and tralalaalalala that, or so I thought) it genuinely changed my outlook on what I thought I knew about the whole decade and the evolution of music with real, genuine soul. And the backdrop to the game is also fantastic. It's a shame they messed up segments of the game with the districts gameplay, without that faff I think they would have had a top tier open-world crime game better than some GTA's

Re: Don't Forget About the New Game from One of GTA's Most Important People

Ravix

@Korgon yeah, that'd be cool to see. I mentioned in the forum it seems like the most Ubisoft game Ubisoft never made from the trailers. And at the moment it is like they are staying quiet and relying on people mentioning it is from the producer of GTA a thousand times in the hope people think it's something it's not and market it for them.

I'd hope it is a fresh new IP with creative flare and interesting gameplay. But in a really strange way I'm also getting similar vibes to The Day Before in the way it is being shown and marketed 😬 and we don't want to see something like that happen on such a big scale.

Definitely need to see a lot more before deciding if it's one to be excited about.

The bonus content is listed as "horde mode mission" and "extra missions and challenges Q3 2025" "extra missions and challenges Q4 2025" "extra missions and challenges Q1 2026"

Which makes it feel like a live-service game masquerading as a single-player story-driven thriller. As a story driven game may have DLC set in a new area with the same in-universe problem to solve as the main game or, a maybe prequel showing events that led to where the world is now or a new event stemming from the events of the final chapter of the game. But it is "new missions and challenges" which sounds like the game itself is made up of contained missions and challenges like some kind of extraction game πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Re: Kids Aren't Dreaming of Owning a PS6, Says Netflix Games Boss

Ravix

@Cornpop76 because subscriptions suck and aren't actually viable long term, as everyone finishes playing everything they want to play at some point so the demand for cheaper and quicker to make games takes over to meet a demand, but no one actually wants those anyway so they eventually leave.

See: Netflix and their TV and Movie content. It's basically become a cheap reality tv service with some poorly made leased IPs to supplement it, rather than any new original ideas.

This is what we don't want gaming to become, and yet it has already begun 😬

That's what it kind of seems like. Maybe it is more nuanced. But since the rapid stock decline (who remembers Skull & Bones somehow being made and even declared AAAA) we have known something has been up with the G's trying to make money from their own messes, and at times they were seemingly happy to force the stock to plummet with some absolutely mad decisions.

So they formed a subsidiary of a company with $5billion in assets, but the new company is valued at $4Billion so we know it has the lions share of the assets. It feels like it is mind-blowing that the subsidiary is already worth 4 times as much as the parent company, doesn't it? πŸ˜…

Re: Fans Unsure Whether Sony Will Block PS5 Games on Xbox's Rumoured PC Hardware

Ravix

@LogicStrikesAgain yeah, I'm agreeing with your sentiment. That is all I can glean from the info so far. They can't be interested in actually increasing share any more, which for a business in the tech industry seems weird. We will see how they approach it, I guess πŸ˜…

They are definitely not going to be able to please all of their current users, let alone get new ones, unless it is the most spectacular release of a "console" ever, and change the game forever while they are at it. Which seems unlikely as of now. So it seems like they are just aiming for a small portion of the PC market (why wouldn't people just upgrade their PC in that situation, though) and a small portion of the handheld market, whilst potentially alienating those who stuck with them, or joined because of the S being cheap.

Re: Fans Unsure Whether Sony Will Block PS5 Games on Xbox's Rumoured PC Hardware

Ravix

@LogicStrikesAgain it may just be that, as they are mostly a publisher now, their next "console" is just to keep the smaller numbers who still want an Xbox happy in future, whilst they let everyone else move on to the other platforms over time.

If it is a gaming enthusiast's device it is going to hurt their user base that are currently on Series S, unless they are also releasing a scaled down version at a series S price point. The hardcore Xbox gamer would be annoyed if they packed it in entirely, but might enjoy a premium limited product. So it will be interesting to see what specs they do offer. Because I doubt they can just muscle in on PC gaming.

To me, it has to be both incredibly powerful and incredibly cheap compared to PC to actually increase their share in any way, as steam users already have PC's that they can upgrade. So all I can think of is that they are resigned to lose more of the share and will just offer this Xbox PC thing to please some very specific users and an Xbox handheld to please some other very specific users as everyone else waves goodbye and plays their games elsewhere πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
