Re: Minecraft's Native PS5 Port Is Now Available, Free Upgrade for PS4 Players

Loki7T1

I upgraded for free / downloaded the PS5 version yesterday. It saw my PS4 save on the console, and showed those worlds in-game as "old" - these needed to be converted before I could then play them in the PS5 version. After that was done and I had exited the game, I deleted my PS4 save / worlds.

This reminds me of when the PS4 version changed from "Editions" to "Bedrock" several years ago - in that case the "Editions" worlds similarly had to be converted to the new format to be played there.

Re: Mini Review: Gleylancer (PS5) - Solid 1992 Mega Drive Shmup Shines Again

Loki7T1

@Denni5m Who pissed in your corn flakes this morning? Was it the C64 that you seem to think this game can run on?

The pure frothing rage in your post is at once hilarious and disturbing, but completely unwarranted. This is a re-release of an older game. Yes, several gamers out there, young and old, appreciate older games like this one. That shouldn't affect you at all. Instead of picking fights, you need to get over it.

Re: You Can Now Upgrade Your PS4 Copy of Quake to PS5, and It's Free

Loki7T1

@Futureshark Note that it's not the "pure" N64 rom included, but rather a port of Quake 64 running in this modern engine. The "Quake 64" add-on has the levels and pared-back level geometry of the N64 version, and the lower-res textures + filtering and scan lines. However, you can still apply to it all of the graphical upgrades available in Bethesda's latest version of Quake, like upgraded enemy models or dynamic lighting/shadows, if desired. While it's not the actual N64 rom, it's still a very cool inclusion that I appreciate, and one that I'm playing through alongside some of the other level sets/expansions.

Also, Machine Games provides 2 expansions here, not just levels. Several levels in each expansion.

Re: Battlefield 2042's Portal Mode Is FPS Genre's Take on Dreams

Loki7T1

@SoulChimera Far Cry Arcade is great, and if you're skilled you can certainly come up with some very cool maps, like the Goldeneye ones that were in the gaming news recently. But it's not Dreams.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my point remains that in FCA you're still working with existing assets from Far Cry games past and present, while in Dreams you can use assets shared by other players or create your own assets. Hence I consider the comparisons to Dreams in this article to be sensationalism for clicks/comments.

Re: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection (PS4) - Cut-Throat Action, Old-School Design

Loki7T1

@Keyblade-Dan (or anyone else that has installed this): Is this collection one big, monolithic install, or separate download files for each game? I've noticed some remaster collections split up the games into their own downloads. Shenmue 1+2 did this, also the Bioshock Collection in which BS 1 and BS 2 are one download, while BS Infinite is a separate download. I actually prefer this approach, as I don't want to waste HDD space on the games in the collection that I'm not playing, and I'm not necessarily going to play/complete them all one-after-the-other in one huge binge.

If it is a single install, what's the installed size after the day 1 patch?

Thanks in advance for the info. Cheers!

Re: Turrican Flashback (PS4) - Four Turrican Thrills in One No-Frills Package

Loki7T1

@JamieO Yeah, one of the reasons I was jazzed for this collection was that I could finally play the Amiga games with a discrete jump button and all other functions also mapped as desired. My favorite setup is fire on RT, whip on LT, jump on X, the rest spread amongst the remaining buttons. I think the recent update added a "classic jump" option (unless I missed it before), which I presume is up-to-jump like the Amiga original.

You're right that the odds would seem to dictate that someone else is seeing this besides me, so I will indeed keep my fingers crossed for a sound fix.

Re: Turrican Flashback (PS4) - Four Turrican Thrills in One No-Frills Package

Loki7T1

@JamieO It would be very odd if a settings combination would cause my issue, but I appreciate that you're willing to try it!

To save you the trouble, I went ahead and installed the game again, opened it with a fresh save, and this time left all settings (including controls) at default except for no wallpaper. And... sound still drops out. I test by starting Turrican or Turrican 2 and immediately walking to the left and shooting. By the time I get to the cliff with a few enemies and hidden power-up box and 1up at the very end, I've usually already heard the first instance of music drop-out/stutter. Music will be fine for a while, maybe 30 seconds, maybe a minute, before it happens again. Repeat until insane, or all lives are lost due to the distraction.

(Previously, I had tried messing with the "Paula Stereo" option, as it's the only sound-related one. I noticed that when set to 0, there seemed to be less occurrences of the music/sound issue, but maybe that's my imagination. Anyway, 0 is essentially mono and not how I want to hear these tunes.)

I guess I could leave the game installed and wait for another patch, but given no one else seems to be observing my issue, I'm not confident it will ever get fixed.

At least I can console myself with Gunlord X.

Re: Turrican Flashback (PS4) - Four Turrican Thrills in One No-Frills Package

Loki7T1

@JamieO I too play Trophy Challenge mode with no wallpapers, and mostly default settings except for button mapping.

When the 1.01 update dropped last Friday I was SO hoping that would fix the sound issue, but it didn't. I eventually uninstalled this in disgust, because as you say if I can't enjoy the music of the Amiga games then what's the point? $30 wasted, I guess.

Yes, I have a base PS4 bought in 2015, but I've never had a sound issue like this with any other game. This is a simple collection of emulated 16-bit games and frankly everything should "just work". It vexes me even more that somehow no one else is observing this sound issue - which makes it seem like I'm crazy. And it's just the Amiga games, not Mega or Super, that are affected this way for me - that's a very specific issue, but again no reviews out there mention it.

So frustrating!

Re: Turrican Flashback (PS4) - Four Turrican Thrills in One No-Frills Package

Loki7T1

Has anyone noticed issues with the sound? I'm on base PS4, and the music for the two Amiga titles cuts out every now and then. It's like a stutter, but only with the sound, not with the graphics or framerate. It's very distracting when it happens. Sometimes the music will play fine for a minute or two, lulling me into a false sense of security, and then another stutter.

Mega Turrican and Super Turrican don't suffer from this issue.

Re: Observer: System Redux Details Its PS5 Upgrades

Loki7T1

@Futureshark @Waffles12415 I think it's a great detective mystery / walking simulator. The grungy cyberpunk atmosphere of the apartment block (and glimpsed mega-city in the background) is amazing, helped along immensely by ambient synth that Vangelis would not sneer at. Rutger Hauer owned the main character as well, and while the story delves in cyberpunk tropes like trans-humanism and uploading a human consciousness to the net, it does a good job with those tropes in my opinion. I haven't played any of Bloober Team's other games, but this is one I'm glad to have experienced.

Only downsides in my mind are 1) performance on my base PS4 was a little rough in just a few spots, and 2) beware of a tricky "sequence" where it looks like you're in a forest and not getting anywhere no matter how far you run - really it's an illusion and you have to use your scanner to "see" the real world in outline and interact with 3 servers to dispel the illusion.

Re: Mini Review: Superhot: Mind Control Delete - More of the Same Slow-Mo Action, But No Less Satisfying

Loki7T1

@Johnnycide Well, here we are several weeks later, and PSN still doesn't show my free copy of MCD, though I bought the original game the week it launched with my own money.

Now, this isn't the end of the world, but my expectation came from what the devs promised. They said it would take up to a week after launch, tops, for the free game to show up. Perhaps the devs shouldn't make promises they can't keep.

In any case, due to how this transpired, my excitement to play this had faded at this point. If it shows up free later after the devs (or whomever is at fault) get their sh*t together, maybe I'll play it then, maybe I won't.

Re: Demon's Tilt Is the 16-Bit Pinball Game of Your Dreams

Loki7T1

@Genejoke You're right, of course - the influence behind Demon's Tilt is obvious to anyone but Sammy. The sad truth is that Crue Ball is servicable at best (I'm being generous here), and isn't even in the same league as the sublime Dragon's Fury / Devil Crash MD.

I shudder to think of the continued Crue Ball references that will be foisted upon us should Sammy be the one to review Demon's Tilt.

Needless to say, Demon's Tilt is an insta-buy for me this week.

Re: Mini Review: Superhot: Mind Control Delete - More of the Same Slow-Mo Action, But No Less Satisfying

Loki7T1

More info about getting this free if previously purchased the first game, per https://superhotgame.com/mcd-faq/#free-copy-how:

"How can I redeem my free copy if I purchased SUPERHOT on PlayStation 4?
A free copy of MIND CONTROL DELETE will be added automatically to your PlayStation 4 games library within a few days after the release. The logistics for this can take a bit of time. Please allow up to a week of patience before you panic that your game is missing."

Of course it can't just be available on launch day. OF COURSE.

Re: Mini Review: Star Wars Episode I: Racer – This Old Favourite Still Has Some Magic

Loki7T1

@SoulChimera I just turned on my PS4, and lo and behold, there was an update for this game - I certainly didn't expect a patch this quickly!

Afterward, my PSN trophies now sync successfully, including the ones for this game. The issue would appear to be fixed.

The patch notes (under Update History on the PS4) sneakily don't even mention a trophy fix, though, just "Improved rendering of pods". The pods look the same to me, heh.

Oh well. At least the trophies work correctly now. This game could still benefit from a raft of improvements, though, like custom button mapping, d-pad support in the menus, and more.

Re: Mini Review: Star Wars Episode I: Racer – This Old Favourite Still Has Some Magic

Loki7T1

@SoulChimera When I go to the trophies section in the PS4 UI, it never syncs with PSN, just stays at 0%. This started after my first trophy for this game popped.

I still see the trophies at the local level, but they're not showing up at the PSN level because I can't get the sync to progress past 0%.

Another symptom is that If I press the guide button right when a trophy notification is on-screen, I get an error (because that is trying to bring up the PSN listing for that trophy). Normally this always works for me, but not since my first trophy for this game.

So annoying!

Re: Mini Review: Star Wars Episode I: Racer – This Old Favourite Still Has Some Magic

Loki7T1

What? No mention of the bug where this game's trophies can't be synced with PSN? And then afterward, your PS4 will not be able to sync ANY trophies with PSN, until this is fixed?

I've read more than one thread on Reddit about it, and the devs have acknowledged the trophy issue on Twitter.

In case you're wondering, the Switch version has several of its own problems. Aspyr really screwed the pooch on this one.

Re: Mini Review: Project Warlock - A Slick Homage to the Retro FPS

Loki7T1

@playstation1995 Blasphemous is dope AF also. I love that scene after you kill the first boss, where your dude catches the boss' blood in his helmet like a cup, and then puts it back on his head with the blood streaming out of the bottom - brutal! The art in that game is off the charts.

Word.

Re: Mini Review: Project Warlock - A Slick Homage to the Retro FPS

Loki7T1

@playstation1995 I've played through the first Medieval episode so far, consisting of 4 major areas of 2-4 levels each, 11 levels total + boss fight. In this game you can't save whenever you want, you have to beat the level. One thing to watch out for, though, is the lives system. I first played on Normal difficulty which starts you with 3 lives. I played carefully/cautiously as that's my style - I don't go in guns blazing. I did pretty well, didn't die once up to the episode boss, at which point I promptly lost all 9 of my built-up lives. Doh! You have to be careful with that dude - he can kill you in 1-2 hits. Anyway, the levels aren't that long so I had put maybe 3 hours in total at this point, not the end of the world.

When you lose all your lives, you lose your level progression also - you can't pick up again at the boss (the "Continue" option on the main menu goes away also). You can still access any single level you've already beaten, with all the weapons/upgrades you had when you lost all your lives, but that's it. The thing is, other than the loss of progress, Normal difficulty actually felt "right" to me with regards to ammo pickups, damage that enemies do, etc.

Since I lost all my progress in Normal anyway, I thought I'd try starting a new game on Casual difficulty. I wanted to try it at least, and see if it was really "too" easy. To my surprise, everything felt the same as Normal. Enemies still took the same amount of hits to kill, the number of enemies seemed the same, secrets the same, upgrade points the same, etc. It seems the only difference between Casual and Normal, and it's a big one, is that with Casual you have unlimited lives, meaning that you can always start a level over if you die, and you'll have all the same gear as you had when you first started that level.

So, choose your difficulty carefully! Other than the odd difficulty system, I love every other aspect of this game and would still recommend it.

Word.

Re: Mini Review: Project Warlock - A Slick Homage to the Retro FPS

Loki7T1

I highly recommend this to fans of retro FPS games, especially for $15. The PS4 port is on-point.

The upgrade system is basic yet applies meaningful changes to your weapons. There are tons of customization options for shaders/filters, HUD size, FOV, etc. Secrets are reasonable in number, contain useful loot, and can be found without too much effort. I could go on, but bottom line is that it's a great game for the right kind of player. You know who you are.
