"If we were the baddies in the war for independence, why are the North suddenly the goodies in the Civil War?"
Philosophically interesting to debate the existence, or non-existence, of good and evil, but it's generally agreed upon by good people that slavery is bad.
@lazarus11 "I have a problem with the actress portraying her , and the fact her line delivery is atrocious , you seem to think if you're a straight man and you criticise a gay character you get your free homophobe badge"
I seem to think that? I think you need to reread my comments, because that's the exact opposite of what I've been saying. Criticisms about the writing and the acting are valid criticisms. Complaining that a show has gay people in it is not a valid criticism. This has been the theme of my arguments.
@lazarus11 "and doesn't just throw in a gay jedi just for the hell of it"
So, if that jedi had been straight, would the writing have been better? I don't think that's how you really feel. So why is it that we point to the gay characters?
@lazarus11 I did address the fact that badly written characters are bad, but don't act like people get this upset about badly written straight characters. There are 6 or more Sharknado movies, Lazarus.
@lazarus11 and who are all thes estraight characters that have been made gay?
Straight people don't mind gay characters, homophobes do.
And stop with this "appeasing minorities" nonsense. Ellie isn't a lesbian to appease minorities, Ellie is a lesbian because that's what the writer wanted.
@Psofo "its exactly your type of rigid thinking and constant labeling that has tipped the scales in favor of the current US government."
No. Racists are responsible for their own racism, and homophobes are responsible for their own homophobia.
I have never in my life heard a gay person complain that a show has a straight romance. I mean, I'm sure they exist, but I haven't met one.
Preferring entertainment with LGBT characters is not equal to preferring entertainment without straight characters. Of course people like to see themselves represented. But only bigots like to see only themselves represented.
@lazarus11 badly written characters are badly written, regardless of their orientation. And what gives you the idea that Disney's audience is so straight? Let's be real, it's girls and gays.
Straight people don't mind gay characters. Homophobes do. I think what you're actually recognising is that the United States has a bigotry problem, all the more emboldened by the current government.
@Olmaz it's not an ad hominem attack. You are perfectly aware of the reputation we have as gamers. And you're not helping with how staunchly you're defending your complaints about LGBT representation in games and TV.
By the way, the fact that LGBT characters ruin your enjoyment doesn't make people go "wow he's so straight." It makes people think you must be struggling with your sexuality.
I'm not saying you are. I'm saying that's the impression you're giving people.
@Olmaz lol did you really just spend half a day talking about how you don't want gay people in your TV shows, to then accuse someone else of being intolerant?
Dude. Stop confirming the stereotype that we're all a bunch of homophobic incels.
@Olmaz "Are you telling me there are some kind of content everyone should like to watch unless they're called somethingphobic, or accused of lacking culture or maturity?"
Yes. If the presence of gay or lesbian characters in a story reduces your enjoyment of media, then you have a maturity problem.
@lazarus11 straight men don't have a problem with gay and lesbian characters, homophobes do. Disney is still immensely popular, and TLOU is still immenseley popular, so the majority doesn't mind gay characters. A loud minority does, and this loud minority is exactly why we gamers have such a bad reputation.
@Olmaz btw, i take offense at you calling gay people "a specific kind of content". Could you imagine someone making a big deal about the fact that a show has a Turkish character? I mean, I'm ok with the existence of Turkish people, but I don't understand why they have to be in all my shows. I have a preference for stories without Turks.
@Olmaz bro, if you need your show to be sexy straight people doing sexy straight things, then you're just not the target audience of TLOU. There are worse things in life than not being the target audience for something.
@Olmaz "Would you care explaining why you disagree with the statement that you can be tolerant in real life towards something but at the same time not particularly eager to see it in your entertainment?"
Yes, with this sentence: "I'm ok with gay people, I just don't want to see them".
I refer back to my initial point: if you're not mature enough to handle gay characters, you're not mature enough to watch a show or play a game with gay characters.
@Olmaz "You can completely be ok with people being gay, while not appreciating seeing it in the content you consume."
I disagree wholeheartedly, but I already said I'm not going to try and change your opinion. Your aversion to LGBT representation is clearly part of your identity, as evidenced by your complaints about newer Assassin's Creed games. (Even though Brotherhood has a whole quest about rescuing DaVinci's boy toy.)
@Lembit there absolutely were complaints about the gay men in season 1. And no, I don't think that people who identify by a notoriously homophobic American political party would portray gay and lesbian characters in a respectful manner.
Because, as I said, homophobia is a political agenda. Gay and lesbian characters are not new, they are not edgy, they are not "woke", they are not aiming to shove anything down anyone's throat. This is an adult show with adult themes. If someone can't handle adult themes, they should not watch an adult show.
Wow, these comments are blowing my mind. If you're bothered by the show featuring lesbians, then you're not mature enough to be watching this show. The existence of lesbians isn't a political agenda, your homophobia is.
@Olmaz "this show isn't homophobic enough, and I'm not sexually attracted to all the women" <- if you think this is valid criticism, then I won't try to change your mind.
It says in the article that some people are complaining about gay kisses and the physical appearance of castmembers. Those are the same things that the game was review bombed for.
Not all negative reviews are review-bombing, but those that fit the above description absolutely are.
If age limits were enforced, we might not have this issue. Strange though how fantasy horror can cause such a stir, but games that have you shooting real people in real wars, those are fine.

@mary1
I'm sorry, are you suggesting that only one side of the political spectrum is against slavery, racism, and the KKK?
Isn't that saying the quiet part out loud?

Re: Rumour: American Civil War Assassin's Creed Game Cancelled Due to Fear of Controversy
@nomither6
I understand that this is your opinion about games in an US civil war setting, but I assure you that this was not the reasoning for the Ubisoft execs.
They were afraid that the racists wouldnt buy their game.
Re: Rumour: American Civil War Assassin's Creed Game Cancelled Due to Fear of Controversy
@nomither6
I think you are undersetimating the educational value of stories in historical settings, even fictional.
I also think the US is already doing enough to obfuscate these very important parts of their history, no?

Re: Rumour: American Civil War Assassin's Creed Game Cancelled Due to Fear of Controversy
Upsetting racists shouldn't be controversial.
This is definitely not how I expected the 21st century to look.

Re: Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2's TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed
@lazarus11 I think you might be confused about the conversation we were having.
Let me refresh your memory:
I was arguing that a character's sexuality has no direct correlation to the quality of writing, and you were telling me I must hate straight people.
So which one of us is throwing around unfounded accusations of bigotry?
Re: Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2's TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed
@lazarus11 "I'll leave you to your hatred for the straight man"
No one here is complaining about straight people, Laz. How many times did I say straight people don't mind gay characters? At least twice.
If you feel addressed by my complaints about homophobia, that's your fault.
