There’s no doubt about it: the 20th anniversary PlayStation 4 is the ninth wonder of the world. Sony’s nostalgic grey goodie box is a thing of sheer beauty, and an object that I suspect that every single one of you reading this article desires. The problem is that you probably can’t have one, as the Japanese giant only opted to manufacture 12,300 of the things globally – a cute, commemorative number, but nowhere near enough to satisfy the insatiable demands of PlayStation fans worldwide.
I get it: the platform holder wants this to be the most coveted item in PlayStation history, ranking up there with that golden NES cartridge that was doled out to a select few Nintendo Power readers. The difference is that when the House of Mario made 26 shiny Nintendo World Championships cartridges, they were merely intended as competition prizes, and not as a celebration of its brand; Japan’s Famicom-themed Game Boy Micro, for example, was given a much bigger run.
And in my opinion, this is the way that it should be, because fans shouldn’t be forced to deal with scalpers to get their hands on a celebratory device. To be fair to the firm, it has attempted to mitigate this issue in the UK; the brilliant PlayStation ’94 shop is selling the system for £19.94 today, if you can prove that you have the credentials as a veteran of the brand. A pass code, as well as a memorabilia trade-in, should lock this down to true aficionados – but only a select few.
I genuinely hope that everyone that’s secured a system enjoys it – but I feel like more people deserve a chance
Indeed, you’d need to have been in London in the early hours of the morning to stand any chance of picking up one of the 94 systems available – a particularly impractical task for anyone living in the north. Perhaps the idea is to test your dedication, and those that want it enough will make the journey anyway – but it’s a weekday, and most people have work. There will be other ways to scoop up the systems online, of course, but then you’ll be at the mercy of a server like in the United States.
I don’t want to come across like a whiner here simply because I haven’t been able to get a machine myself; I genuinely hope that everyone that’s secured a system enjoys it – but I feel like more people deserve a chance. The auctions that were held in Spain, for instance, were all designed to raise money for a good cause – but should it really have come down to those few with the biggest bank balance to score a device? Already these are selling for up to $20,000 on eBay overseas.
This is, of course, the natural outcome where a sought after console is involved, but Sony reiterated several times during the PSone’s anniversary last week that we are central to the celebrations, so shouldn’t we all have the opportunity to commemorate the occasion? A second, larger run of these systems wouldn’t necessarily need to detract from the limited editions in the channel right now; the engraved casing and numbering could be stripped away to maintain the value of the originals.
Regardless of the approach, though, we reckon that the manufacturer’s missing a trick by not making these machines a little more widely available. As a lifelong fan of the PlayStation brand, I would have bought a second system in an instant – and I know that I’m not alone. I may get one online next week, but it's a long shot – and while I’m certainly not bitter about that, I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t just a little bit disappointed. At the very, very least, Sony – please let us buy the DualShock 4.

Do you think that Sammy’s being a cry baby, or does he have a sliver of a point? Would you have bought one of these limited edition PS4 systems given a realistic opportunity, or do you not feel the need to double dip? Whine with us in the comments section below.

If I didn't buy my PS4 at launch, I'd have been more inclined to bid for this item on eBay. As much as I love the look of it, I think I saved my bank account.
I would buy 1 if it came out normally in the shops Not bothered about the numbered bit to & just in a normal box without Cam to. I will 'try'(Hmm) next week to get 1 online in the UK but i know i won't be lucky to get 1 quick enough
There's still ones from the London shop apparently going on Ebay which is a letdown.
I would choose it over white or black, the opportunity should be there '4 the players' to buy one. Nevermind.
If like at least the controller to release more so that everyone who wants it can at least have a bit of "greatness"
I support having more of these. 12,300 worldwide is a ridiculous number. And since this includes the camera, then the scalpers will go crazy as by default is more expensive than the regular PS4.
Always people on soacial welfare here that buy up all these goods to resell em at insane prices. They have all the time in the world to go out and buy these things during working hours, while we work our asses off so they can be pampered. Getting so sick of it all... Now I have to pay them double; With my taxes they can buy these things in the first place and than I have to hand in even more money because I want that console....and the fun part is, all the profit goes into their own pockets, instead of paying 52% income tax. F this, F the system and F Sony for screwing the real fans over...
I reckon they should have made the special editions actualy look like a PSX not just colour but shape and everything, one of those I would have got
but on topic no I don't think they should do another run
@Boerewors 52 % Income tax? You have to be Dutch!
I would like to buy one though I'd also like it to remain limited
@Sanquine
South African, but working in Holland indeed. Take one look at "MarketPlace" and you know stuff has gotten out of hand. Scalpers without jobs selling 20 Gamecube adapters at a time for 3 times their value, buying CEs from OUR money and then charge double.... I'm so sick of it. collecting isn't about going to shops, fairs and events anymore...collecting is about paying 5 times the real value to people with scripts that allow them to buy entire limited stocks online or people who can wait in line while we are busting our ass off!
Please watch the language -Tasuki-
"At the very, very least, Sony – please let us buy the DualShock 4." That is exactly what was thinking they should at least make more 20th anniversary edition DualShock 4's.
The first time I saw the white DualShock 3 I instantly thought, man I love to get one in the old light gray color just like PlayStation 1.
It's too much ask for one normal version on grey? I want just that, people can keep the limited number inscription and coloured symbol...
@FullbringIchigo a black version with the square triangle circle X lit up in the colours on the front/top would be awesome
@Boerewors they can probably store all that cash up on PayPal too.
this whole situation is making my BLOOD BOIL !!!
attention sony - do you think everybody lives in london ?
okay , so lets have a look-see on eBay ... oh look - there's one "buy it now" it's a snip at £5,800 ! what's on auction ? great ! ends next wednesday , there's only 22 bids so far and it's only up to £1,200 !
of course , all these entrepeneurs will give all the staggering profit they make off these to their chosen charity won't they (won't they ?)
grrr... this makes me SO ANGRY !!!
@eliotgballade Yeah, it's gutting to see those systems bought this morning instantly go up on eBay. I think Sony did a decent job trying to tie it down to fans, but it was always going to get exploited by idiots. There'll be plenty more of this going on, too.
I understand why it happens, and I don't necessarily think anyone's to blame other than the scalpers - but it just doesn't seem fair.
I'm with you. I missed the PS Experience Keynote, so I had no idea how to get one in the US. All I knew was that you had to pre order on Sony's shop, but now they're sold out. I didn't expect it to sell so quickly. I was actually kinda hoping they'd stick for a while so I'd still get one when I scraped up the cash needed. So yeah, I think they should do one more run. I'm not selling a kidney on ebay to get one.
I really don't feel like waiting for a 25th or 30th anniversary for another limited console. I'll be 29 by a 30th anniversary. I need my youth, man!
And yeah, it sucks seeing scalpers get these. Come on, I'm sure you don't need $20,000 if you can just get one and throw on sale.
@get2sammyb : you would wish that these didn't sell - but i guess there will always be people with more money than sense ( and not necessarily all of them in London ! )
@get2sammyb - Well I'd like to agree w/ your own self mocking (no bonus points for being 1st on a post you wrote) and tell ya to go cry a river, but that would be more than a little hypocritical after I wrote this last week:
______________________________
They should have added 2 more zeroes to that #, I think they could have easily sold 1 million of these yet still refer to it as "limited", even if ti's going to be more expensive b/c of the camera in the box. That camera is my favorite part, it would just look so odd on top of my 52" piano black glossy flat screen. Odd but perfect.

@sinalefa - At the time I wrote this I didn't know it would be $399 w/ the camera, assumed it would be $429 or something. Maybe if they do a 2nd run they can jack up the price so it isn't so "special".
Oh, anybody know what is so commemorative about the number 12,300? I'm guessing that's not an actual important number but a play on 123?
I'd prefer they made a PS4 with a much bigger hard drive.
@rjejr
According to Cnet, it is actually $500 like any other PS4 with a camera. That article also explains the number: 12/3 or December 3rd.
http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/ps4-goes-grey-to-celebrate-20-years-of-the-sony-playstation/
@sinalefa - Thanks. Besides the price that article also said 12,300 was in honour of the date Dec 3rd. Which is weird b/c I thought Japan used the european dating progression so it should have been 3,12,00. I guess making 12,394 would have been too odd, even for Sony. And who the heck cares what date it came out? I thought maybe PS1 sold 123 mil consoles or something relevant like that. They should have made 10,249 b/c according to Wiki it sold 102.49m. Though 102,490 would have made a lot more people happy.
@Vorlon Same here, not that interested in owning a classic looking PS4.
I know it's cheaper and doable to just swap out the 500GB PS4 HDD with a 1TB or bigger, but I don't think I could be bothered to, plus I'd afraid of breaking something.
(I don't have a PS4 yet, $400 is too much for me)
I have never bought a "limited edition" console with the exception of the God of was psp. Most of them are tied to games no one will care about next year(ie calil of duty x, Destiny, etc). But this is a legitimately cool console that I can see retaining it's coolness. I would like to see a second run but if they don't make more these are most definitely going on to be collectors items.
@Ps4all The only console I bought limited was the Wind Waker WiiU bundle, but it doesn't seem too limited because it stated in stores for a long time. And I would say my white PS4? But idk
I already own a standard PS4. I was going to preorder a limited edition here in the States when I first saw it announced, thinking I could sell my old one to a friend. I hesitated though, and now I really regret it.
@XFsWorld Nice. Wind Waker is sweet. The wii u is a nice second system with a the ps4. I play online on ps4 and with my family and friends on the wii u.
No Sony shouldn't do another run of 20th Anniversary consoles. Everyone's going to just pick one up and try to sell it on ebay for $20,000.
@get2sammyb I was crying too Sammy, I live in London have a ton of PS1 memorabilia but don't break from uni till the 12th so wasn't going to skip lectures over this however cool it is I just wish Sony had made more.
I wish nothing pain and bad karma on each and every money-grabbing, scalper scumbag. I would like one of these consoles to open and to play. Not to store, and not to sell. Seeing it go the way it is, is making me madder and madder, because seemingly almost every person who got one yesterday was the same kind of person.
it would be great if Sony auctioned the rest off and donated the anything over retail to charity.
Comment to Sony just in case this forum is being read by publicist or CEO anyone. You're at 16 million and Xbox One had a strong holiday. Give the console war a strong uppercut and release a model like the author said a stripped down PS4 version of the Anniversary Edition with the system number removed and even the engraving if it saves money. If 20% of the 16 million buyers buys your system again that's would've put you at 20 million units sold. I would think across the world 4 million current and or new customers would love to get their hands on this version of PS4. You be crazy not to capitlize on the thought. I also have your PS4 console and wanted this one very badly but I'm not going to pay someone on Ebay 800, 1000 or even 15K to own it. If you release this model I would A. give my current one to my step son. B. sale it for more games. Either way you win Sony. Sony the people want this model. Period
Just had an even better idea. How about a The Order 1866 Edition with an basic version of the Anniversary Edition Colors. That should be a good system seller bundle. I'd buy the hell out of that.
