10. Elden Ring (PS5)

Elden Ring’s crowning achievement is taking a relatively niche gameplay loop – refined over the years with Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, et al – and presenting it to the masses. FromSoftware’s open world magnum opus is a staggering achievement: a sandbox bursting at the seams with vulgar secrets, all presented with enough ambiguity to make combing every square inch of its dramatic Lands Between backdrop feel like true discovery. With a complex combat system enabling an eclectic array of gameplay styles, and some of the most devilish encounters in gaming history, this is an unmissable experience – and then some.

9. Metaphor: ReFantazio (PS5)

The team behind the Persona series presents its take on a fantasy RPG with Metaphor: ReFantazio. Structured very similarly to its stablemates, this game has you exploring a realm filled with monsters, monarchy, and magic, and is just as stylish too, with gorgeous presentation throughout. Presenting players with one of the best RPG stories in recent memory, engaging combat, and rewarding gameplay systems, this is yet another banger from Atlus.

8. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, as Cloud and the gang embark on their post-Midgar adventure. Featuring open world areas, there's a much greater emphasis on exploration, and while the core story of Final Fantasy 7 does take a backseat for a lot of the game, there's an enjoyable focus on character interactions. What's more, Rebirth is utterly stuffed with things to see and do. Side quests, minigames, treasure hunts — it's a massive release, and although we'd argue that it feels a bit bloated at times, there's no questioning the amount of effort Square Enix poured into this second part of the trilogy.

7. Horizon Forbidden West (PS5)

The sequel to Guerrilla Games' breakout hit, Horizon Zero Dawn, is bigger and better than its immediate predecessor in every single way. Horizon Forbidden West may retread familiar territory with its open world RPG adventure, but it improves upon the writing, introducing a worthwhile cast of characters for heroine Aloy to bounce off. New combat and exploration wrinkles, including a grappling hook, intensify the action, while the eponymous Forbidden West is a diverse sandbox, bursting with varied biomes and secrets to discover.

6. Demon's Souls (PS5)

Sony comfortably hooked the enthusiast crowd by adding Demon’s Souls to the PS5’s launch lineup. FromSoftware’s legendary action RPG – which would go on to spawn the so-called Soulsborne series and, eventually, even Elden Ring – was snubbed by the Japanese giant during the PS3 era, as it felt early builds were simply not up to snuff. Publishers like Atlus and Bandai Namco eventually picked it up, and it went on to become a cult classic. Perhaps as a tacit admission that it made a mistake, its recruited tech specialists Bluepoint Games to remake the game for a modern era – and the results are remarkable. This version uses original PS3 code to make for an incredibly authentic experience, but its visuals are among some of the best you’ll find on Sony’s new-gen console. It’s an extraordinary blend of old and new that comes highly recommended.

5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition (PS5)

Seven years later, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still one of the absolute best RPGs around. This updated PS5 version only adds a little bit of new content in the form of costumes and a (actually fantastic) quest inspired by the Netflix series, but the visuals are better than ever thanks to improved assets, textures, lighting, and even a dedicated ray tracing mode. What's more, a number of small gameplay improvements really add up, resulting in the definitive edition of Geralt's generational adventure. If you've got the urge for yet another replay, then it's best done on PS5 with what is the best looking and best playing version of The Witcher 3.

4. Baldur's Gate 3 (PS5)

Baldur's Gate 3 is a role-playing masterclass in almost every aspect that matters. At its best, it's one of the most deeply engaging RPGs you'll ever play, and even though its methodical pacing won't be for everyone, it sets the bar so high in terms of player freedom. Forging your own path to the infamous city of Baldur's Gate makes for a truly memorable journey, stacked with fantastic characters and superb storytelling. A defining example of its genre.

3. Persona 5 Royal (PS5)

Persona 5 Royal is the definitive version of an outstanding RPG — and it hits a silky smooth 60fps on PS5. The original Persona 5 was already a masterpiece for many, but this greatly enhanced and significantly expanded re-release is basically Persona perfection. Balancing elements of everyday life simulation with amazing turn based combat and a lot of cool dungeon crawling, it's a truly immaculate title. Brilliantly cohesive, refined, and quite possibly the most stylish game in existence.

2. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (PS5)

Inspired by RPGs new and old, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG with the whole package. Set against the backdrop of a bleak mystery, the game sees a group travelling across a magical landscape to finally put a stop to the enigmatic Paintress and her deadly countdown. While the characters, story, and music all shine, it's the combat that stands out most, with each party member having totally unique mechanics that can complement the others. On top of that, quick-time events and the ability to dodge or parry incoming attacks keeps it feeling active and engaging. There are some rough edges here and there, but by and large, this is an RPG any fan of the genre shouldn't miss.

1. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (PS5)

Trails simply doesn't get much better than Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. This is a full-on remake of Falcom's very first Trails title, rebuilt from the ground up to be what is easily the series' best-looking instalment to date. Borrowing the hybrid combat system of later Trails games, it's got some of the most refined gameplay mechanics in the franchise, blending a classic JRPG foundation with modern sensibilities. A perfect gateway to Trails as a whole.
