Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year as a definitive edition. It's going to have a healthy amount of new content, including a fully orchestral soundtrack, and brand new side stories for each main party member.
When all of this stuff was announced, we couldn't help but wonder whether the PS4 version of the role-playing title would end up receiving the new content via future updates, or perhaps as DLC. Fortunately, The Wall Street Journal's ever-reliable reporter Takashi Mochizuki asked Square Enix about the possibility.
However, the publisher's "undecided" right now, for whatever reason. Obviously Square Enix would like people to double dip on Dragon Quest XI if possible, and the Switch version's enhancements provide more incentive to do so. That said, there's good will to be gleaned from also releasing the additional content on Sony's system when the time comes. At this point, we'll just have to wait and see, but at least the conversation's been started.

If they don't they will have alot of pissed off fans people were already mad about the soundtrack this is just pouring salt in the wound
they are dreaming if they think average folks will purchase the same game twice. s-e can go to hell if they don't offer the new content via dlc or enhanced edition for ps4 owners. also, the switch port is getting a significant downgrade in the graphics, naturally, so there is no way i would want to touch that version.
Come on, let’s not start this entitlement thing. PS4 gets a lot of exclusive in-game content, let another system have something.
I havent played this game yet because I have been waiting for the Switch version, and I am quite happy I did.
@Areus Gamers are an entitled lot who seem to get angry over everything, so there'll be people who disapprove regardless of what Square-Enix does.
S-E is going to want to use the exclusive content to help drive people to the new Switch version, so it won't be seeing the light of day on platforms any time soon, if ever.
I'm glad waiting paid off. It's going to be a bit lower res than the PS4 version, and, of course, it's quite late, but these extras features are really cool. S-E outdid themselves here.
@OmegaYato No chance mate. When people bought the game last year they did so believing they were getting a full game. Now that it's coming to Switch there getting new side quests plus extras. It's a kick in the teeth to those that bought it day one. If it was just the odd weapon or soundtrack it wouldn't an issue but in a story driven RPG both PS4 and PC players are missing out on more story just because Square Enix want to appease Nintendo fans.
But has I've always said if you want something, then get on social media and demand it.
I mean, this isn't a new thing for games like this honestly. I'll double dip because I liked the game THAT much, but this is a standard tactic when it comes to this. Look at what happened with stuff like Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy Internationals and Kingdom Hearts Final Mixes. Can't say i'm shocked.
I love the game, but I'll sit tight, waiting and hoping Square does add all the extra content to the PS4 version.
@AdamNovice They bought a full game. It's not like Dragon Quest XI was deliberately gimped. S-E designed extra story content to help promote a late port of the game after-the-fact.
You're no more entitled to this extra, Switch-exclusive content than Switch owners are to a port of Persona 5. If it's that important to you, you could always sell off your PS4 copy and buy the definitive edition on Switch in the fall.
@Ralizah Lol, I don't own the game or a Switch but I perfectly understand why both PS4 and PC players would be annoyed that there missing out on more content just to keep another platform happy.
@AdamNovice Enhanced ports aren't anything new though.
@AdamNovice Square said the Switch version would have exclusive content even before the PS4 version was released. Dragon Quest has been strong on Nintendo consoles, much like how Final Fantasy is strong on PlayStation consoles. Imagine how other gamers felt when PS4 versions of games got exclusive content. Just because you bought the game before everyone else doesn’t mean you’re entitled to whatever comes. They’re playing it smart. You forget how big portable gaming is in Japan. Even the 3DS version of the game has stuff the PS4 version doesn’t.
@AdamNovice I understand why they're annoyed. But exclusive content in late ports is there for a reason: it gives that little extra push to help fuel sales for versions of games that are already disadvantaged by the fact that they're releasing after hundreds of thousands of people have already purchased them on other platforms.
Given this, it would make zero sense for S-E to patch the content into currently existing versions of the game.
Console-exclusive content is always rubbish on a base level, doesn't matter who's doing it. Let's not pretend otherwise.
I understand this is a bit different to something like Destiny having PS4 exclusive weapons or ship skins, but at the end of the day, it's still a company adding stuff to a game that can be bought on multiple platforms.
It's business, but it still sucks.
@ShogunRok Honest question - were a lot of PS4 fans complaining at Squenix when the 1 year late Tomb Raider 2 released on PS4 with all of that extra content? Or where they telling MS fans to shut up b/c they got the game 1 year earlier?
I don't think PS4 version will get it - see every Wii U game not getting any content that the same game is getting on Switch - you PS4 guys have no idea how good you have it - but I do expect the PS5 version to have it. And I do expect a PS5 version. I don't care if PS5 is bc w/ PS4 there will still be full priced PS5 ports as long as people buy them. And they will b/c "native 4k" or whatever.
Good article by the way, you could have been a lot saltier or nastier or whatever, especially about the music, my gawd that music, but you wrote it pretty matter of fact, I was impressed w/ your restraint.
It's funny, as upset as I am about Wii U games being improved on Switch I don't care about this. I played it, still need to beat Calsmos, and it was great, both the game and the post game, for $60. Comparatively, has the 2nd expansion for Ni No Kuni 2 DLC EVER released? It's still $79.99 on the US store a year later. Game was barely half as good as DQXI. Man I'd be so annoyed had I paid that.
https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP0700-CUSA07345_00-NNK2DELUXEED0000
They're really expecting people to double dip on an RPG of this size and length by adding some side stories and a new soundtrack? No way. If they do bring this to PS4 and/or PC, it's probably going to be paid DLC, and way too expensive.
I find it hilarious that PS4 owners are getting mad about this. Like, would you be saying the same thing if it was the other way around? I'm glad a Nintendo platform is getting this and I don't even own a Switch.
But it's coming to switch sooo late, let them have a few new things. I am jealous they are getting nicer music because I really think it would have made my experience a lot more enjoyable but it's not like I can get it retrospectively ... By the time this is out on Switch we'll all be playing Persona 5 R or Gran Blue Fantasy or some other JRPG.
It's not really something I approve of, and I understand any bitterness, but I also think it's worth noting Dragon Quest is more familiar to Nintendo audiences anyway. Only four mainline entries are originally for PlayStation consoles (One of which is a Japan only MMO), two of those being remade on 3DS, with remakes of IV and V for PlayStation consoles being Japan only. There's also spinoffs on PlayStation systems but they've been released on Nintendo systems as well. Maybe it's a loyalty thing.
I'm having hopes for the other versions to get the Switch's features. I'd hate to see hatred going about for those who opted for the earlier versions.
At the same time, though, most of my gaming time is spent outside of my house nowadays (at least, going by weekdays) and because I have a Switch, it's the best bet for me to being able to play any game anywhere, and DQ XI is no different for me.
@rjejr your comment makes no sense because not only did ps4 players have to wait an extra year to play it but that content that they got also went to pc and Xbox players for free
@jFug no matter the console the people getting it would be telling the others to deal with it so it’s not just something ps4 players would do. It’s still a crappy thing to do especially with how bad the music in the game is but I see it coming to PS4 at some point after the switch release or square would have just said no. I just don’t like gamers like you who don’t even own the switch but are happy about this like what sense does that even make
No idea what the problem is. I already played it and sold my copy back to Amazon. And was tons of fun.
Never playing it again one way or another.
Pretty much spitting on the Ps4 and Pc players who went out and supported their game at launch, not only will they be missing the orchestral soundtrack which was a big controversy but miss out on several side stories for the main characters, which is unacceptable.
I hate console exclusive content. That being said, we PlayStation owners have had our fair share over the years.
Does it suck. Yes. But it only hurts when we are the ones losing out.
Whoever started this trend is to blame. And let’s hope it ends soon.
Of course it will I give it 1 month top then it will come to other platforms.
@Kienda I agree the blame should not really be directed at either side but the companies, it really needs to stop.
Got the limited edition on PS4 but never got around to it. I'll play the complete version instead.
@KingdomHeartsFan Switch is amazing though.
Pretty sure that those moaning about this would have no problem if it was the other way round,
Console exclusive content in games is always lame, but something like a better quality soundtrack really should not be an exclusive feature anyway.
I hate to buy incomplete games. I'll probably wait until the Switch version is cheap enough.
Comparing the Switch and PS4 version, the Switch one doesn't seem a lot inferior in terms of graphics at all, to be honest. Sure, textures are a bit blurrier and the resolution is higher on PS4, but judging the game by its first scenes, they did a good job bringing it to Nintendo's console.
I can't even pretend to care one jot about this. I played Dragon Quest XI, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm not going to buy it a second time because omg its on Switch now. I'm not bothered about the extra content. I played the game for 130 hours if anything it needed less content.
I am happy with my purchase. I mean, I got it for Christmas actually, so it was technically free. But you know.
Huh I kinda glazed over this reveal and didn’t know they were updating either soundtrack. Could be a game changer for me. The original still wakes me up at night.
@Kienda Indeed, I don't really care what platform I play the game on, but to me this is Square Enix saying: ''Hey, you want this DLC, tough luck, buy a second copy of game first!''. Console exclusive content is always stupid, because it's often not worthwhile caring about, yet at the same it makes you feel you're missing out on something.
@Octane to be honest if I feel like I’m missing out enough I’ll just buy it, otherwise I don’t really care. I don’t see why it’s got to be more complicated than that really.
@kyleforrester87 Well, I wouldn't have problem with it if it was DLC, but they're effectively asking you to buy the game again; so it becomes more like €60 DLC. It happens with a lot of the Wii U games on Switch as well. I kinda want to play the extra content, but I don't €60 want it, so I usually ignore it altogether and move on. What else can I do about it?
@Octane yeah but it’s either worth £60 or it isn’t in my mind, if it isn’t I don’t worry about it!
@kyleforrester87 I feel you. My BF asked me "can you please turn that off" when he was around and we just muted it after a while, keeping just the SE.
it's definitely coming to ps4.but why is it on switch first.it coming in a form of goty edition.definite edition.or dlc on psn.word up son
They can keep it, i ain't gonna be a filthy port beggar for crumbs.
I can just imagine Veronica's reaction -
"Do you reeally think that I'm that stuupid to buy it again?"
@KingdomHeartsFan nah.
@kyleforrester87 Of course. I wouldn't say no to the option of getting it separately for the version I already have however.
@Octane you’ll do as I say.
@kyleforrester87 Ay, sir!
@dark_knightmare2 How did Xbox owners play the extra PSVR area? I'm guessing on PC it was Occulus or Vive.
Edit: You said: "Xbox players for free"
Not for Xbox 360.
Will Xbox 360 owners have access to “Blood Ties?”
No. “Blood Ties” is available only for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.
Will Xbox 360 owners have access to co-op “Endurance Mode?”
No. Co-op “Endurance Mode” is available only for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.

@Octane "It happens with a lot of the Wii U games on Switch as well"
Also happens a lot I believe when older games get ported to new generations. And after 50 comments nobody has mentioned that Switch is Nintendo's next gen, whether Sony fans like it or not.
Switch - PS5 - X2
Wii U - PS4 - X1
Wii - PS3 - X360
Gamecube - PS2 - Xbox - Dreamcast
N64 - PS - Saturn
Squenix has more than 1 version of several of their games - putting out "International Versions" that improved upon the original version that released in Japan. Had they simply called the Switch version the "International Version" maybe people would chill. This sounds EXACTLY like an international version to me.
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/International_Version
It happens. Sony fans have just gotten so used to winning they don't know how to react well to news that doesn't benefit them. Not that anybody else does either.
Please just give me the orchestral soundtrack. The music in this game in 2019 is awful. Switch can keep the side stories. This game is already long enough for me.
@rjejr: Nintendo is not next gen until the Switch Mini is in stock in Target.
Hard to believe they can fit all this extra stuff on a cartridge.
One of the most deplorable trends is Switch games with massive downloads to finish the install (Starlink).
@dark_knightmare2 Maybe because he’s not an arrogant fanboy and is happy that another system is getting something great? What’s with elitists thinking they’re entitled to everything? PlayStation gets a ton of exclusive stuff, let another system have something.
@Ryno Switch Mini, the 180' spiritual successor to the Wii Mini. Unless Nintneod makes a Switch Mini with no cart slot, digital only like the PSPgo, but no internet. Yeah, I'm not sure how that will work either - USB to PC downloads? - but after the 2DS anything is possible.
Next gen started 2 years ago, next next gen will be named, well I can't even begin to imagine. Xbox has some seriously weird numbering, but Nitneod just makes up names as they go along. Switch 2 would be my choice, it's selling so well, but after they release the Switch Portable, Switch Home, Switch DS, Switch Mini, New Switch XL w/ retractable wheels over the next 3 years, people may be hard pressed to figure out the Switch 2 is actually a brand new console and not the 8th reiteration of the current Switch.
They should call their next console "Freak-Out" that's an over powered handheld w/ wireless TV out over a Tesla coil and let Chic do the ads.
@rjejr I think generations are a bit nonsense these days. But if you insist, a generation is a time period. The Switch can't be in one, whereas the PS4 and Xbox One are in another. At least, it seems to me that Switch is a thing alongside the PS4 and Xbox One. If Nintendo release a Switch 2 in 2021, I'd say the current one belongs in this gen, as it's competing with the PS4 and Xbox One.
I know I'm the weird one here, but I bought this on PS4 and I'm double-dipping for the Switch release, so I don't care either way.
I understand this move on a business standpoint but i really loved this game an this features are just too good to pass on so i´ll double dip but it´s obvious that i would prefer this for the version i already own , my wallet will suffer lol.
F me for supporting them and the game I guess. 🙄
We all know the deal now: PS4 and XB1 gets games first to play in high graphical fidelity, then the Switch gets those games 6 months or so later for people to play on the go but less pretty and with a little extra to sweeten the deal for double dippers.
It’s just up to the consumer if you buy the early PS4/XB1 version, or wait in hope for it to come to Switch.
@Octane Depends when the PS5, X2 and Switch 2 launch though I think before we can really decide. If PS5 and X2 were too launch later this year and Nintnedo drags out the Switch life though iterations - see 3DS family that wouldn't die - then 10 years from now Switch may look more like next gen than it does now. If PS5 and X2 aren't until 2022 and Switch 2 is 2023, then yeah, Switch was this gen and Wii U never happened, it gets retconned out of existence like the PSPgo.
But looking at it now, I can only go by what we have now - Wii U Nov '12 date matches up fairly well w/ PS4 and X1 in Nov '13 making them a concurrent gen, and Switch is indeed the successor to the Wii U, just look at all the ports ending in DX or Deluxe. And since Wii U launched a year before PS4 and X1 it only makes sense Switch would launch before PS5 and X2. So really what we need are PS5 and X2 dates, and a Switch 2 date.
But that's for the future to figure out, for now, Wii U goes w/ PS4 and X1, Switch follows. So if Switch gets a game a year or two after PS4, which happens a lot, why is anyone the least bit surprised it has more content? That's how these things work.
People want to complain about DQXI music on PS4, well that's worth complaining about, whether or not the game releases on Switch and what music it has is irrelevant. And while it would be nice to be updated in the PS4 version, I just don't see it. Unless people want to buy the NEW International DX version for $60 on the PS5.
Now, had the game released simultaneously on both systems at the same time, see FIFA 19 on PS4 and Switch, then the complaining makes a ton more sense and is to be expected. But a year later, not so much.
https://fifaforums.easports.com/en/discussion/414052/fifa-19-nintendo-switch-vs-ps4-xbox-pc
@rjejr: Haha, something like that! I will just contemplate getting a "Switch X" whenever Metroid Prime 4 comes out.
@Ryno "whenever Metroid Prime 4 comes out."
More like Switch X to the N-th power, amirite
Can't pass up a good algebra joke. 😎
@Octane If you ask me the current gen is this PS4/Xbox One/Wii U/Switch.
I know it's not, but I see the Switch as an upgrade to the Wii U kinda like the same vain as the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X or even like the New 3Ds. I mean it's not called the New Wii U or Wii U Supreme or whatever because Nintendo do smartly didn't want it tied to the Wii U since it did so bad sale wise. Not only that but do they really want to confuse people with another similar name like they did with Wii U??
Yes it's not a revision of the Wii U but it does somewhat act like one. If I am making any sense.
@OmegaYato I have warned you about insulting others. You seem to want to ignore my warnings so we will see you later
@dark_knightmare2 I'm happy because the Switch (and Nintendo platforms in general) usually gets the shaft when it comes to 3rd party games (less content, released much later, etc). In this case, they are getting more and deservedly so; the Switch is on fire.
@Tasuki sorta? I get what you’re saying I think, the Switch is basically the Wii U concept completed in terms of portability and convenience, but the two screen concept was abandoned and it doesn’t let you play owned Wii U games...though it has ported or made obsolete almost everything of worth on the Wii U.
I'm glad i waited for the Switch version now, the extra content for the side-characters is what interests me the most, having said that, i'm pretty sure it'll all come to PS4 once the Switch version is released, this is Square Enix after all, they never turn down the chance to make money from add-on content lol
@NintendoFan4Lyf @Tasuki @OmegaYato I find it absurd that on this site people like the 3 I tagged get 5+ dislikes (the maximum it can show) for simply stating their perfectly balanced, personal opinion.
I mean, if one says “I’f rather get this game on another console” why in hell would you ever downvote that?
I thought mega fanboys were on NL.
@NintendoFan4Lyf totally agree man, I really respect you a lot for you balanced comments, and that’s why it irritated me: it’s clear people simply downvoted you when they saw your name.
@Gamer4Lyfe It's not unacceptable, it's just some exclusive content for a new version, for a new audience. Gamers can be such entitled babies.
I got the PS4 version on day one. It's a fantastic, complete experience. I also love my Switch, and honestly the fan boy freak outs I'm seeing here on PS is just sad.
@clvr Yeah I am not a big fan of the downvote system either for that very reason it creates too much fanboyism. I have been against it since day one However @get2sammyb seems to like it and it's his site after all so it's here to stay.
@Tasuki Get rid of the down votes, and bring back the little country/region flags. Those were seriously awesome. 🇨🇦😍🇬🇧 I must be the only oddball who actually liked them.
@Tasuki to be honest, I support it and was actually one of the first to propose it over on NL.
The problem with it is that you’re asking people to self-regulate, and you know how well that can go on the internet 😅
All in all, though, I’m surprised to see it handled this poorly by the PS community; I thought it was more mature and less toxic than NL’s, but actually these instances (people getting 5+ dislikes for nothing) usually don’t happen over there.
@clvr I have and would've always argued the opposite; as shortsighted as Nintendo fanboys can be, they're generally not spiteful like Playstation's, in my experience, old chum.
@EVIL-C Lol now that's old school the country flags. I liked them as well but the reason they were removed as I was told is it caused people to insult others for no reason other then where they were from. So yeah they had to go
@clvr @Tasuki @EVIL-C I think the theory is, long-term, that if you're regularly downvoting someone who's getting on your nerves, the system will be able to pick up on that, and once someone passes a certain threshold they'll just be removed from your feed entirely.
When it's all developed how we want it I think it'll bring an element of self-moderation to the site, because there are certain people who post things knowing they're within the boundaries of the rules, but still being inflammatory on purpose.
So that's the general idea! As it is now, perhaps worth noting the button doesn't actually do anything.
@get2sammyb Right the only thing wrong I can see that as a mod is if a person downvotes me too much how will they be able to see my warnings??
@EVIL-C yeah you do have a point, though I can assure you, based on my personal experience, that NL has become pretty toxic in the last few years, though right now it’s in a pretty good place compared to a year or so ago.
@get2sammyb “if you're regularly downvoting someone who's getting on your nerves, the system will be able to pick up on that, and once someone passes a certain threshold they'll just be removed from your feed entirely.”
I figured it’d do something like that, such as picking up those who downvote another user every time just to spite them.
Anyway, thanks for clearing it up!
And yeah, it’s probably a bit too soon for it to be able to descern patterns in votes and such.
@Tasuki Mods and staff will obviously be excluded from that.
@rjejr dude at that point no developer was worried about last gen heck I didn’t even remember it came out for 360 but my point still stands no matter how much you try to twist it to save face. Xbox one players and pc players got that content for free which throws your whole argument out the window about them not getting that content so just take the L and move along
SE - We're releasing DQ on Switch with extra content to help drive sales since it's a year late and many gamers with both a PS4 and Switch will have already played it.
PS4 fans (Who are enjoying arguably the greatest generation of all time - the largest number of console exclusives, an unbelievably strong game lineup, and a powerful online capable system): "They're spitting on me, a player who supported the original release at launch."
No. You got a game with over 100 hours of content when you bought it at launch, for just $60, and you didn't have to wait an additional year so that they could add a few sidequests and a soundtrack. I'd say they delivered for you.
@Ralizah Probably just leave it where its at. I really disliked Square Enix this generation anyway.
@get2sammyb What are you going to do about people like IBeAGamer then?
@rjejr The Switch is Nintendo next generation handheld. It’s comparable to current generation consoles in a similar way to the Vita is competitively to the PS3. It can Dock to the TV but so could the PSP go and Saga Nomad and they were both definitely handhelds. Its true colours will be revealed when the PS5 finally arrives.
I'll be waiting patiently for the PS4 port of the Switch's Definitive Edition, Square-Enix would be crazy not to release the new content for PS4 owners as well.
