It's hard to believe that we're still managing one or two Final Fantasy XV news stories a week, but seriously, it just never ends. Square Enix is still pushing the game as if it's some sort of MMO, constantly dropping hints about upcoming content and what we can expect from the release going forward. This time, Italian publication Game Legends has squeezed a little more information out of director Hajime Tabata.
First off, Tabata mentions that plans to explore antagonist Ardyn's past are in place. There are no details on whether this will be the focus of future downloadable content or whether it'll simply be part of some extensive update. Either way, it sounds like you can look forward to seeing more of the title's suave baddie at a later date.
Tabata also says that a multiplayer beta test is planned. For those out of the loop, it's been known for a while that Final Fantasy XV will be getting a multiplayer mode of some description - but details remain almost nonexistent. Still, at least we now know that a beta seems likely. Hopefully we'll learn more soon.
That's your regular Final Fantasy XV news update, anyway. Has your interest been piqued? Get back together with Noct and the gang in the comments section below.

Oh yes, more of Ardyns past would be amazing!
There is so much awesome story hidden in this game, I hope they tell more of it sokn
He was quite a cool bad guy to be fair.
Well, it's good to always have reason to go back to my favourite game~
Will the multiplayer involve bathing suits and water pistols? They should call it FFXV vs.
Ardyn should get his own $15 origin story DLC game. Give it to season pass members for $10 if need be. And if they could actually explain all of the mythos that would be great too, b/c even though I watched the movie and anime so the current story made sense to me, I never understood what was up w/ the deities, the meteor - just put it down, no? - and the "ancient war" that created that valley rift which was ALWAYS in my freaking way. Build some more bridges people. Didn't help that every god seemed to have 3 names and half of them were killed by the bad guys before the game started. I think, maybe. It all really made no sense to be honest.
I'm not getting $60 FFXV-2 though, need to save up for episodic FF7. I'd really like to hear how many parts and when at E3, b/c it's really starting to look like a PS5 game to me if it's going to be more than 2 parts.
FF15 was a great game. Was, as in last year. The games almost in the 2 for £20 bin at the local game shop, why do squeenix insist on updating it?
@themcnoisy Hmm I know this has been said before on here but it has been bugging me more recently. So many people seem to suggest that because you didn't buy a game at launch or during the very early hype period, it's not worth picking up down the line?
Good case in point, had they not improved Persona 4 with the "Golden" update you wouldn't have just experienced one of the best games since FF8.
Can't say I'll benefit from these FF15 updates, but I hope others do, coz it's quite cool.
Just makes me wonder what the eventual GOTY version will be like.
People still go back to all the other FFs years and years and years after release, this will be no different, so it's good to see they'll be fleshing it out as time goes on. It won't even hit PC until 2018 at the very earliest. Nice to know there are still one or two genuinely dedicated dev teams still about in this day and age. Nice to see them still being regularly applauded for doing so. Good effort, Square.
Because a decade wasn't enough.
I used to be excited about Square Enix potentially fixing a lot of the stuff I didn't like about Final Fantasy XV, but now I kinda just wish they'd draw a line under and do XVI properly.
@johncalmc Genuine question, do you think the continued time spent on FF15 will actually detract from FF16?
Whatever stage FF16 is upto, they will obviously have another team on it. Perhaps they will move the remaining FF15 team into 16 in the future and this is just a way to keep them busy. Maybe they are planning a full scale FF15-2 and want to get 15 properly fleshed out in advance.
Dunno, I think Square are big enough to work on both though.
I think in these teams you have the thinking people and the doing people. The former may be working on the story, project plan etc. of FFXVI but before that's finished, the doing people can update existing games if for whatever financial reason this is still viable. I will pick this game up again once it's all part of one, full, complete package and at a sale, so not anytime soon. I can wait.
@kyleforrester87 Probably. Not sure how much.
You gotta think, these guys have Kingdom Hearts III coming, which some of the Final Fantasy team work on, and the Final Fantasy VII remake, which is being farmed out but they'll have some input on. Then they're also working on FFXV DLC and updates and multiplayer and whatever else they're still doing with that game.
There's only so much bandwidth they've got there, and with all these high profile projects, and the smaller ones they've got going on, continuing to support FFXV can't be helping.
@johncalmc Yeah I do agree to an extent, the more they have going on as a company it's simply inevitable it'll have an impact on everything else.
@kyleforrester87 @johncalmc I think the bigger question here is: Is the continued Final Fantasy XV support really worth it? It's nice that Square is keeping the ball rolling and adding to the game, but I still question the point of it all. Surely you can't bank on new sales because you patched chocobo riding so that they can jump higher? Some of the stuff that's being added just seems insane. I thought the carnival was a total waste of time, for example, yet they clearly put effort into it.
I don't know, maybe I'm just a misery, but I can't believe there are legions of people out there still sitting and waiting on FFXV's updates and DLC. I mean, how long are they going to keep this up? Driving the Regalia off-road? Who cares? Bah...
@ShogunRok That's kinda where I'm coming from with this. I played FFXV and I was disappointed by it, not because it was bad, but because I really liked it and wished I'd liked it more.
Because of that I was super-excited to see them change a few things up to improve the game and hopefully quash some of my disappointments with the game. But then once the dust had settled, I was left thinking, do I really care any more? The horse is out of the stables. It's long gone. At some point we've got to move on.
2017 is killing it. Especially on PS4. And I just can't imagine me finding the time to bother playing FFXV again whether they sort it out or not. I just don't care any more. I've got the season pass and I'm probably not even going to play the DLC.
@ShogunRok I think when you're "riding the tip of the spear" with all things gaming like most of us on here are it's easy to get caught up in the hype, chewing up and spitting out new games as they release before moving on to the next one. I'm guilty of it myself - so many games on my shelf that I've seen the end credits of and loved but I've never jumped back into despite all the unplayed content. Whatever though, that's the way I enjoy my games and I'm at peace with that. I suppose this strategy is good for those who like to go back and enjoy the games in their collection more frequently than I, or for people who haven't yet purchased the game but plan to, the later of which are less likely to be vocal on forums like this..(if they event exist at all. SE seem to think they do lol)
Spot on Kyle "the later of which are less likely to be vocal on forums like this...."
Actually I'm quite excited to see what actually happened to Ardyn, he's one of the most intriguing bad guys I've come across in any game and it's just a shame his story wasn't more at the forefront. Hopefully it'd be a much larger slice of dlc than these episodes appear to be and it'll certainly add more to the story. Whilst these updates are quite small in themselves, I will return now and then when a few have dropped
@kyleforrester87 Very true, as a reviewer I'm always jumping from one thing to the next (stealth brag) so the idea of going back to FFXV time and time again seems insane to me. On the other hand, someone who really likes the game and doesn't play everything that comes out as it comes out might find this support exciting.
what about this square enix, fix the frame pacing so I can start the game, thanks
@kyleforrester87 it's great that companies support games, it really is. But how long should you really need to keep playing a game for? When's the end actually the end? That's my stance.
For anyone who hasn't picked up the game they should. I never said anyone shouldn't, I just don't see the logic or what they are trying to achieve as @shogunRok and @johncalmc have posted above with the updates. Throw the resources behind another game.
Edit) More the point, why bother picking up games at release anymore if it's completely different months later? Free rides over for every single developer now - I'm gonna wait 2-3 months and buy the standout games then. Gaming's changing, it's about time I did too.
@themcnoisy Its ok to not see the logic given your situation, but my point is if you look beyond that there are a few reasons as to why they might want to improve upon the original concept and why it would probably benefit a number of gamers.
And to answer your question.. you should play for as little or as much as often or as infrequently and in whatever way that you like!
@kyleforrester87 You are spot on though, I jump from game to game. I see so much work being put in for such small gains, is it worth it? I'm really unsure. Loads of companies are doing it now, so maybe my old school thinking has well and truly had its day. It just reminds me of George Lucas throwing in awful cgi in the star wars films, it didn't add anything to the experience.
@themcnoisy I really do like to think it's a labour of love for the developers, maybe I'm deluded but if I was in a situation where I'd released a less than perfect product and had the support and resources to improve it I'd feel pretty lucky and fortunate. I think it's a negative prospect because we're used to companies releasing broken products then taking ages to fix them, so we look at FF15 and assume it was broken at launch and now they are scrambling to "make it right". When in reality, as you say, the game was great, and now they just want to add some more stuff for those who are interested. Simple as that really haha.
That's my thoughts on it, anyway.
