Ex-Xbox One exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider will purportedly shimmy to the PlayStation 4 on 11th October, assuming that a product listing on the Italian arm of GameStop is accurate. The date's a Tuesday which isn't necessarily in line with typical European releases, but publisher Square Enix may be planning a simultaneous launch with North America.
There's reason to believe that this is accurate because an employee at GameStop Italy managed to snap a picture of his store's database, which shows the same date for this long overdue port. Perhaps most fascinating is the price: €70.98, which is about $78.34. To be fair, most new games in Europe carry the same cost – but it seems incredibly steep when the Xbox One version can be bought for a lot less.
Of course, much of this could be placeholder information, and we still don't know whether the PS4 version will include any extra content. Crystal Dynamics, the game's developer, has said that the port's still on track for this year, but it's keeping the specifics close to its chest. We'll contact the publisher about the authenticity of this date, and let you know if we hear anything else.

Said it before and I'll say it again, keep it SQEnix.
i'll be happy with that date as i currently don't have anything ordered in october that i can remember
I can see them charging full price for this and it's DLC.
I'll still buy it, TR 2013 was amazeballs.
With the likes of Battlefield, Titanfall 2, WWE, Dragon Quest Builders, World of Final Fantasy, Mafia 3, THE LAST GUARDIAN and PSVR with its many games around the corner... Good luck!
@viciousarcanum Indeed.
Will buy it at 50% discount at psn store if the game price is $60 new. I can wait.
Can't wait for this!
@viciousarcanum World of Final Fantasy looks great
I'd be much more exited for this than the last guardian, to be fair.
I'm really looking forward to playing this, tried the first reboot on ps3 with plus and loved it. I'll follow my usual purchase self imposed policy. If it's not multiplayer as main selling point buy it 6 months after launch, half price all patches complete. I've made it to nearly 40 without dying from not playing it, a little longer won't hurt.
Nobody want this game anymore
What the Xobx version costs is irrelevant. Its a new game so will be priced accordingly. A PC game thats been out for a few years then gets released on console is not going to be sold at the same current price as its been sold on the PC. The hype died for me with this game after waiting a year for its release. It will be a decent game of that I have no doubt but certainly in no rush to buy it maybe a few years down the line I will pick it up. Already waited a year whats a few more years on top of that. The release window is badly timed they might as well have waited till next year the back end of this year has some heavy hitters being released.
@dryrain "What the Xobx version costs is irrelevant."
It's really not. If the exact same game is available for £20 brand new on another platform, then why would anyone pay £40?
I see dozens upon dozens of people say they won't buy a game on Vita because it's cheaper on 3DS or smartphones. I'm not sure what the difference is here.
Now, of course, Square Enix/Crystal Dynamics could be adding value to the base package in the form of DLC/bonus content, which would change the conversation a little bit.
@get2sammyb
It's shady, I agree, but a great game is a great game.
@get2sammyb
I'm pretty confident it will come with the DLC, be a GOTY edition.
Its actually really hard to price this game. They were charging £40-50 for ther tomb raider remaster but then a lot of people who had been playing tomb raider since the PS1days were annoyed at square and xbox. You would think that they'd be trying to win back fans a little but then this didn't sell well so they are probably hoping to make money with the larger user base.
Oh what if the support the PS4K how would that chage peoples opinons on price?
I bought Tomb Raider Definitive Day one on PS4! I was told I could not have this a year ago! I would not buy it for any price today I have NEW games to buy not bargain bin old games that are over priced. Continue to sell it on Xbox and reap what you sow...
I got this for free with my GPU when I made a new PC at the time of its launch. I've still barely played it. I'm maybe 2 hours in at most. This is why it's silly to care about release dates too much, it'll probably have been completed by most PS4 owners before i get around to playing it again.
I imagine it is a placeholder price anyways because they haven't officially announced anything yet.
Screams preowned from GAME
If they bundle it with the first one and all dlc and keep the price at a fair point, I'd certainly consider it. Plenty of other games coming out so I'm happy to wait until the price hits rock bottom if they decide to go full price.
Seems expensive consider RotTR and Just Cause 3 were in a 2-pack for $30 during the Steam sale. But the game (this game) is still worth $60, was back in November, was when it came out on PC, and will still be this holiday.
@TeslaChippie Eh, tried 5 hours of it on Steam and wasn't impressed
@Draythedestroyer Maybe, I think if it's 30 fps on ps4 and 60 fps on ps4k it will be easier to pay the full price, add all the dlc and maybe some ps vr mission/component and the $60 is justified.
I'll wait for it to be on ps plus in a few years
Even if it did release at the usual price, I doubt it would stay at that price for long. I expect it will be available pretty cheap within a month or two after release in the UK.
I'm looking forward to finally play this.
But not at full price, I've already waited a year & don't mind another few months for the price to drop...
SE can release PS4 version at any price they want, bcos I'm sure the price will drop drastically in short time...
@get2sammyb @viciousarcanum
And having played Rise of the Tomb Raider and knowing what a good game is, I wouldn't be surprised if it's better than most, if not all of those set to come out. I'd still recommend it to PS4 owners despite SE's stupidity. Of course if it's full price, I agree they're sending the game to die. Not sure how some of those games will sell, but Battlefield and WWE have an audience and PlayStation owners have asked for Titanfall, I imagine it will get some support from this userbase. Rise of the Tomb Raider PS4 should've been a mid-summer release, especially if they're charging full price. I understand the contract and all that jazz but the game will suffer this fall, no question. Seriously haven't seen a company try so hard to sabotage what should be huge franchises for them. But SE is arguably the absolute worst in this industry. As much sh*t as EA, Activision, Ubisoft get, they're all better than SE.
I'll be getting this as I loved the first one.But with all those amazing other games coming out the same month and before,this may be added to my birthday or Christmas list..in which case price should of dropped for whoever gets it for me anyway...(Of course there's a chance no one buys me anything)
"seems incredibly steep when the Xbox One version can be bought for a lot less."
I said it before and I'll say it again. It's cheap for X1 users because X1 users have paid their dues. They had to watch the game release at full price and wait it out so SE could collect MSRP for the launch.
PS4 uses have paid no such dues for a PS4 release. Games don't grow on trees and SE deserves the opportunity to collect before handing the game out for budget prices. If it's an issue of pride, then I guess.... wait another 6 months. Pay your dues. God forbid one game comes 11 months late to PS4 without everyone feeling they deserve a handout for waiting. You can bet Final Fantasy 7 will be full price when it releases elsewhere after PS4, just like Deus Ex was full price on Wii U, just like every other game that gets ported and isn't more than a generation old. X1 and Wii U gamers experience this sort of thing all the time. Welcome to the same reality everyone else lives in.. Where you're not begged and pampered just for having to wait.
But I totally recommend the game at full price. This is one of the best AAA games I've played this generation.
I was looking forward to this when it was first announced, as Tomb Raider 2013 was an amazing game. But with No Man's Sky releasing in 3 weeks, i doubt i'll have time to play anything else before i die in about 60 years.
@dryrain Mate €70 is a terrible price even for a new game if that is way to expensive. Normal new games are € 55/60 even the GOTY Editions.
@TheTruthThis I want the game I only find the price steep.
@JaxonH One of the best AAA games you've played this generation!? I think I might have to check this out then when it finally releases on PS4! I played and very much enjoyed the Tomb Raider released in 2013, how does RotTR stack up to that one then?
There is no way I am supporting this game after what they did to PS members.
I'd normally hold off on buying a PS4 game at full price, but this comes out right around my birthday, so I'll most likely pick it up.
An October release means that come Xmas and the sales it'll be £20 at which point I'll buy it.
@JaxonH "I said it before and I'll say it again. It's cheap for X1 users because X1 users have paid their dues."
One of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Too many brilliant time consuming games coming out soon so I won't play this til next year. Still looking forward to this and I suspect they will add dlc in to appease any hard feelings. Business is business after all.
I'll probably end up getting it but not day one. I all ready have it on Steam and there are too many other games coming out around that time.
I'll pay 50% of €70 max. We'll see...
@BranJ0
Better in every conceivable way. The reboot was good. But RotTR is excellent.
@DaveIsAnAceGamer
Of course it's dumb to someone who thinks they're entitled to cheap handouts simply because they had to wait a few months for a game. I'm sure it sounds extremely dumb. To people like you.
You're not born with the right to $10 games. You earn that right by a game selling full price and the free market dictating when demand has been fulfilled at full market value. You are subject to the market. The market is not subject to you.
@BranJ0
I'll back up @JaxonH and also say this game takes everything the first did and does it better. And even if somebody has already played Uncharted 4 I still recommend the game. In some ways it's better. I'd go story - Uncharted 4 (not a slight on a Lara's adventure, which does have a nice story). Gameplay - Rise of the Tomb Raider (not to knock Uncharted 4, which does have significantly improved gunplay). The more open world nature of RotTR allows for more replayability, imo. It also has some fun DLCs. I also for some reason prefer the new Lara Croft to Drake. Drake is an awesome character but Lara's a little easier to relate to.
@JaxonH @DaveIsAnAceGamer especially when you consider more likely than not, DLC will come in tow. Something the X1 userbase paid 30 extra bucks for.
@Branj0 like Jaxon said, RotTR is great and easily worth it's asking price, paticularly if you're a PS only gamer. Heck, I'll probably even double dip if it's enhanced for the Neo. This may be sacrilege saying this on here, but dare I say I'm enjoying it slightly more than Uncharted 4. And I LOVED Uncharted 4.
@get2sammyb "If the exact same game is available for £20 brand new on another platform, then why would anyone pay £40?"
...because not everyone owns every platform. Why would it matter to me that it's cheap on Xbone when I don't own one of those?
Why would you expect it at less than full price? That would make no sense at all. Even if they intend to discount it in a month, they need to be able to say its 51% off or whateverr, plus there's plenty of people who will buy it full price.
Looking forward to this, but if its coming out the same week as PSVR it will have to wait!
@viciousarcanum well none of the games you listed have me interested at all so id happily play RotTR over them
Glad this is finally nearing release. Probably won't buy it straight away if it's full price, I've waited this long so can wait a little longer! I'll probably bite when it's under £40.
@JaxonH When did I ever say I expected cheap handouts?
This clown is a riot.
@Sir_JBizzle @Gamer83
Seems a lot of people who have actually played both games agree RotTR is as good if not better than Uncharted 4. And look how much people praise that game around here.
As enjoyable as Uncharted 4 was, if I'm being completely honest, I had more fun playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. The story was almost just as good (they did an incredible job upping the ante with RotTR story) but the gameplay- that's what made the difference imo. I remember fighting a bear- that was a legitimately thrilling experience. Fighting off a pack of wolves, sharpshooting birds and rabbits and deer- it had that whole hunting/crafting thing going on. But it also had a little Metroidvania built in. Progress and craft upgrades which grant access to new areas previously sealed off and unreachable. I loved that.
I dont think I was ready for how good this game was. Definitely caught me off guard. Don't get me wrong- I enjoyed the reboot and was looking forward to it, but I wasn't prepared for how much they actually improved the game. A lot more tombs and puzzles too, which was my biggest complaint with the first.
@Sir_JBizzle Got it on Steam thanks to g2a (sure as hell weren't getting my money) and I put around 5-6 hours into it.
I thought it was trash personally, I hate the new TR.
@DaveIsAnAceGamer
Let's see... when you said you shouldn't have to wait for a game to drop in price to get it cheaper like X1 gamers had to.
That's when
I believe your exact words were "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard"
Calling basic economic principles stupid- who's the real clown
@JaxonH Looked all over and I've not said that once, wow you're on a roll dude.
Direct me to the comment please.
@JaxonH I don't agree with you on this one. The Xbox One owner that picks up the game now for 20 bucks, haven't paid any dues before.
It's a year old game, regardless of the platform it released on. It's the same reason that Tearaway and Gravity Rush weren't released for full-price on PS4.
It's the right of a company to do so, of course, but as an informed gamer I'm not going to buy a game for one platform that is discounted on another. It's stupid. I'll just wait.
@Kidfried It's beyond stupid to say that a fanbase has paid its dues just because MS bought it away for them while another that hasn't been as lucky hasn't
Sony fans had to wait an extra year while spoilers, the most insufferable fanbase in gaming gloating and thousands of gameplay videos are released online all while not even being given the decency to announce a release date or even if it would come to PS4 at all around the time of the deal announcement.
Oh no, Sony fans haven't paid their dues at all~
His point is idiotic to say the least.
@DaveIsAnAceGamer
Can't even remember what you typed?
Comment #39... Dude.
I said it's only cheaper for X1 users because they paid their dues by waiting for the full price game to drop. PS4 gamers have not done that, therefore they should not expect a cheaper game.
When you say that's the "dumbest thing you've ever heard" I think it's pretty clear you're saying you dont agree meaning you don't think PS4 gamers should have to pay their dues like everyone else.
Probably because you think you're special and deserve special treatment, no? Why else would you disagree with such a common sense notion like "you only get to pay less after they've sold at MRSP"
@Kidfried
But X1 gamers did pay their dues. It didn't launch at $20. It launched at $60 and X1 gamers had to wait, knowing the game was released on their system and knowing they could play it that very moment, and had to make a sacrifice of choosing to hold off while price dropped. Until PS4 gamers do the same they shouldn't expect a lower price.
Tearaway and Gravity Rush were $40 handheld games and released for $40 on PS4. Maybe $30 for GR which was several years old- that's the developers right and choice though, not an obligation.
Of course you're free to wait- that's your choice as a consumer- all I'm saying is it shouldn't be expected as if it's somehow an insult to release a brand new game for full price (it's less than a year old- that's still new, and it's brand new on PS)
@JaxonH @JaxonH "I said it before and I'll say it again. It's cheap for X1 users because X1 users have paid their dues."
One of the dumbest things I've ever read.
How in anyway is that meaning that PS4 owners should have to pay less?
Also you know what, why shouldn't they have to pay less?
How have Xbox owners paid their dues just because MS was "nice" enough to buy it away for them and yet it still sold like trash there all while they gloated and told PS4 owners that they will never get it?
PS4 owners had to sit through that all while SQEnix couldn't even be bothered to at least confirm it'll come to PS4 a year later.
This loon is a riot.
@DaveIsAnAceGamer
That's the entitlement I was talking about. And jealousy and envy and a hint of fanboyism.
Poor me. Xbox gamers got a 1 year exclusivity- with their stupid online videos having fun. Screw them. Screw this. Game sucks anyways I hated the new TR.
^^^
You in a nutshell
Whether MS paid for exclusivity is irrelevant. This is pure economics- a product doesn't drop in price in a given market until demand has been satiated at market value
Despite all your envy and disdain for Xbox gamers for getting something you didn't, they still paid their dues by virtue of the game first selling for MRSP, then dropping in price
Wise up
@JaxonH I got the game halfwit, I couldn't care less if they got it first but it doesn't change the fact that PS4 owners were treated like absolute dirt over this game.
Lol this clown is a riot, keep up the Xbox apologist act k?
Oh and yeah, the game is the biggest piece of trash I've played this gen (alongside Order and Sunset Overdrive)
Anyway I need to stop here, gonna play some School Mode in Danganronpa before episode 2 of the new anime airs.
Keep defending douchebag fanbases and devs.
@DaveIsAnAceGamer
"Xbox apologist"
And everyone here who even remotely knows me knows that is a lie.
But you summed up your issue right there, "treated us like dirt"
No, you were not "treated like dirt". Were Xbox gamers "treated like dirt" every time you get a game they don't? Or get a game sooner than them? Or content before them?
Or do you ignore the preferential treatment you receive, then cry foul when even ONE GAME lands on another platform first?
You do not own an "all in one console". You own 1 of 3 main consoles. That means there are going to be some games you get first, some games others get first. Some games they don't get at all- some games you don't get at all.
Stop acting like you're some kind of victim because one game didn't come to your precious console first. Stop acting like its a personal offense to you. As if every game in the universe deserves to land on your one console and if it doesn't you've somehow been mistreated.
It's an awesome game, I would pay $60 for it if I didnt already have it on XBO.
And really, enough crying about paid exclusivity while SFV and Resident Evil 7 exist. The hypocrisony ponies makes me laugh though.
@JaxonH I think you're not so consistent, though. There's a clear difference between "Xbox 1 gamers having paied their dues", which expresses some kind of entitlement, and the simple economics of market saturiation.
The entitlement argument makes no sense to me, but I understand basic economics. However, I don't believe the demand is high enough to warrant a full-price release. This game will bomb on PS4 if they don't release it discounted.
@Kidfried
Any Xbox gamer can buy the game cheap right now. Why? Because it was already sold at full price on the platform. Which means they waited it out for price to drop. That's how they earned the right to pay less- it pays to wait until after demand has been satiated at market value.
That's what I call paying dues. Call it whatever, but it means they endured full price for a time. PS4 gamers have not yet endured full price for a time.
Now, if current market value is less than $60 that's one thing. But I don't think so- not for an 11 month old game. We have $60 ports from 7th gen selling like crazy. There is no way an 11 month old game- a brand new game for PS4 owners I might add- has no demand at full price. Not seeing it.
Games routinely release on PC later than console and those games aren't sold for less. Why would this be any different? There is no way a game as good as RotTR, a game as good if not better than Uncharted, which is effectively brand new for PS4 gamers, flops at full price- the same price all other games release for. 11 months is not that long. The real issue is saltiness from
people who got their pride hurt a game released on Xbox first and now aren't willing to suffer the blow to their pride by demanding lower prices- as if the game is last gen or something.
Even the Tomb Raider reboot sold for $60 on PS4 and it had been out for years AND it was just a remaster.
Fantastic game, worth every penny. If you liked UC4, you'll enjoy this one as well.
The conversation about price is something that fascinates me. I remember when people went mad because the price of No Man Sky, because it was made by an indie studio, and so, it should never be priced 60€.
Mass Effect 2 to PS3 was launch a year later of the PC/XBOX360 version, and it was priced 60€.
I think the issue with ROTTR was the whole screw up in the exclusivity deal, because when the game was revealed in E3 2014 there was no knowledge about exclusivity. Only months after, we learn that the game would be exclusive to XBOX One, and that made people mad.
In the end, companies can price whatever they see fit, but it would be nice a goodwill gesture from SE (charge full price, but offer the DLC codes).
@JaxonH with all due respect, i believed, it should be discounted if you studied finance. In any case, first thing first and general principle, the seller can decide on any pricing point.
Now back to your argument though, you anchor your belief that xbox has paid its due. But if i follow your logic and basic finance, the reason it should be discounted is that ps4 also paid its due for various reasons:
1. Microsoft paid it for them. Think about it, if they both release at the same time in both consoles, then they will have priced initially at full at launch and then drop at the same time. But microsoft paid for it not to be released on the same time. So the lost revenue and lost interest will have been compensated by MS. And therefore, at this same time, they should be priced lower already. In other words, MS is the one who paid in behalf of all ps4 owners.
2. There is time value of money. While time value is more applicable for interest, we can use this by analogy that the time wait has a cost that square enix has to pay for not releasing earlier.
3. Reagrdless of your logic and how beautiful it is, its a fact that its a year old game and therefore its value may have depreciated already.
In any case, you may not agree but its the reason economist and finance analyst dont always agree.
@llems14
Actually I studied economics back in college. Not to a great extent but enough to tutor others.
What you refer to is opportunity cost. The total cost of releasing late.
And while there may be some small impact of lost sales/interest I'm willing to bet that number is negligible at best.
The lost money isn't necessarily compensated by MS. That only compensates for those who will now refuse to buy for whatever self-induced reason. Money is money, and just because they made money off exclusivity doesn't mean they're obligated to throw money down the toilet in not selling at full price to the share of the market willing to pay full price.
And sure, it's value may have depreciated somehwat, but that will only be reflected by the quantity demanded lowering at each price point on the demand curve. So they can still charge full price, only maybe 85% of people who would have originally paid full price are willing to do so now- for example. Still not a logical reason to sell for less to that remaining 85% of original day one would-be purchasers.
@Sir_JBizzle @Gamer83 @JaxonH Wow...better than Uncharted 4!? I actually only finished Uncharted 4 a few days ago, and it is easily my favourite game this generation. I did like the Tomb Raider reboot, but I found the beginning of the game (first couple of hours) to be rather dull, before it suddenly picked up the pace, so I hope that they've addressed that particular issue for me. However, the overall gameplay was fantastic. I also prefer Lara as a character to Drake, but the supporting cast of the reboot was pretty terrible, have they improved other characters in RotTR?
@BranJ0
I still give story, and all it entails such as supporting cast, to Uncharted 4. I did like the characters, mainly villains, better in Rise of the Tomb Raider than in the 2013 reboot though. And RotTR does get the gameplay advantage, there's just more action than in Uncharted 4. Overall both games are about equal, imo.
@BranJ0
I enjoyed it more. But even if you don't, it'll still be about on par or close too.
On par or close to the best game you've played this generation is an amazing game nomatter how you slice it.
I wouldn't get hung up on if it's better or worse- the fact it's even being compared to Uncharted 4 says enough I think.
Like @Gamer83 said, it beats U4 in gameplay for sure, but U4 probably has the better written story. Although, RotTR story is no slouch.
Yay finally!
"It's really not. If the exact same game is available for £20 brand new on another platform, then why would anyone pay £40?"
@get2sammyb
By your logic, most indie games from PC/Steam ported to the PS4 should be 1$ then?
@Rapid what are you waiting on??
@JaxonH actually you answered it yourself. There will be less than willing to pay for ot and therefore market price or value went down. So in the end it all boils down to square strategy. Are they willing to charge full price at less sonthey can sell less or are they willing to match the market price. Its their pricing strategy and not what you or i thinks. So we circle back to my general post above where square can price their product. Just what is their pricing strategy. Further to that i stand by that MS paid the lost sale. The lost sale that square could have sold at full price at launch. So now the price would have gone down.
@bbtothe final fantasy 15, deus ex and mafia 3. I'm going to sink some serious time into all three. Then I'd love to play tomb raider and all the dlc. You can play bloodties dlc in psvr!!
