@RogerRoger Almost voted for Horizon as well! It's good to see the game is getting votes regardless.

@RogerRoger It always make for a more surprising and therefore interesting list when it's more personal. So, I like that about your list. My gaming taste is a bit more vanilla unfortunately, so even though it'll be a very personal list, it'll hardly turn any heads.

Wow, um... okay, little bit overwhelmed by how nice you guys are, thank you! It's taken me years to return to the internet and take part in a community. I was always laughed at, argued with or dismissed as a troll for "having the wrong opinions" whenever something like this came around. Guess I was just hanging out in the wrong crowds!

It pained me not to be able to vote for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, though, I must say. I've played through it three times and I think I've cried even more each time. Six choices isn't enough!

@KratosMD You've summarised my internal struggle perfectly. I couldn't decide which of the two, Origins or Knight, to put forward. Thankfully, the rules of the contest helped (I simply had to put my name against Horizon and Uncharted 4, and that used up my two PS4 votes) but I also really wanted to champion Origins for the reasons you've stated. There's so much focus on the launch problems it encountered, it detracted from the utterly incredible story, flawless music (with respect to Nick Arundel and the others who've contributed to the series, Christopher Drake knocked it out of the park with a relentless powerhouse of a score) and cinematic flair (the boss fight against Firefly remains one of my favourite boss fights of all time... not for being particularly clever, but just for being spectacular). The relationship between Batman and the Joker has been explored to death in the comics, in film, on television and in games, but I think Origins really is the definitive version.

@Kidfried As long as it's personal, I think that's what counts. If you're comfortable doing so, maybe explain why each game means so much to you; that'd certainly make me pay attention, for sure.

@RogerRoger My list was more cultural and based on the impact those games had on the industry as a whole. That being said, it doesn't make it any more valid than your list based on your own personal opinion. At the end of the day, the point was to vote for the 6 best games based on what ever criteria you applied to come to that decision. If you found it easier to create your top six based on personal experience, then that is equally as valid as me choosing my 6 based on the games that had the biggest impact on gaming or culturally importance.

There is NO right or wrong criteria, no right or wrong games you could pick, no judgement that can be levied at you for YOUR choices - its up to you as to why those 6 were chosen and you don't even have to 'justify' your choices. You don't even have to stick to one criteria for all your choices but could pick 6 games, each chosen for completely different reasons.

I like to explain my choices but again that is my choice and not required at all. In my case, I think it helps to explain why games like Goldeneye and Halo:CE made my list when there are clearly better FPS games nowadays. I couldn't personally pick my 'favourite' all time games because I don't have favourites - its a lot like trying to pick your favourite songs of all time - something else I can't do because I like so many tracks and can get something 'special' from so many - depending on mood, circumstance or 'need' at that time. Therefore I had to be way more objective and look at games from the aspect of their impact on gaming in a more general way than just their impact on me at that point as the main criteria - it was what I needed to do to come up with 6 with no more than 2 from the same platform but as I said that was my method of evaluating the choices I picked but its not the only method and its no more valid than whatever method you used.

No one has the right to judge or criticise your method or your choices. No one can say your opinions are out of sync with others as its 'your' choice, your opinion, and your method.

That was tough, 6 games per platform wouldn't even have been easy, but here goes:

Sonic The Hedgehog (Megadrive)
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (PC)
Silent Hill (PS1)
SSX Tricky (PS2)
LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank (PS4)

I’ve created a few versions of this list in my mind. Many games are neck and neck to be considered for nomination. It’s splitting hairs at this point. A good many that I would consider to be on my list are already mentioned a few times and are assured a spot in round 2. So, since there are several approaches I could take, I have come up with the following 6, all of which I don’t think have been nominated yet:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - PS4
This is just a personal choice. Many people did not like this game, but for some reason I found it utterly addictive and the gameplay and story was top notch. A large departure from the MGS formula, I feel like it moved the franchise forward, but yet kept the spirit of Metal Gear intact. What can I say? I loved the game. And that includes the polarizing story, which I found very entertaining and contains an epic ending that left my jaw on the floor and connected Big Boss’s story back to the original classic Metal Gear Solid game where it all began.
Persona 5 - PS4
Not sure how no one has chosen this game yet. One could argue it improved on P4Golden in nearly every way. Since it won Push Square’s GOTY recently, I’ll just keep it at that.
Tomb Raider (2013) - PS3
Lara Croft is the First Lady of gaming, and one of her games deserves to be in the running. This one is the best, imo. A departure from the early games and a reinvention, it is a blast to play and I really like how Lara has been developed as a character.
Skyrim - PS3
How can this not be considered one of the best games of all time? It’s been on nearly every console now, republished over and over. I played it on the PS3 and had never played an Elder Scrolls game before. I didn’t know if I’d like the first person style and heavy reliance on inventory management, but ended up loving this game and played it for many many hours. I still have the Gregorian chant style theme song as one of my ringtones.
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - PS2
Very highly rated game at the time and I poured a lot of time into it. Basically I have not enjoyed racing games much since this game. There was something addictive about collecting the cars and making money on the circuit. Just good memories as a young lad.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 - PS2
A strange choice, I know. But it only seems strange because they ran the series into the ground and the TH games after this became worse and worse until they devolved into absolute garbage. In actuality, before the rapid decline of the skating game genre, THPS3 was riding high at the very pinnacle of gaming on the world’s most popular console at the time. Need more evidence?... THPS3 is tied for the PS2 game with the highest Metacritic score (97%) along with GTA3. We forget how awesome, addictive, and innovative it was.

@Th3solution I have Persona 5 at #3 of favorite games of this gen. Couldn't put it above Bloodborne and Uncharted 4, but I think all these games including The Witcher 3 are the pinnacle of their respective genres. I'm glad you voted for it though .Just goes to show how strong this generation has been.

You guys are choosing the contenders now, then the competition will start, right?

Many of my favorite games are already on the competition, but these are the games that I choose:

Demon's Souls (PS3)
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2, PS3, PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Chrono Trigger (multi)
Okami (multi)

These games, also many of the games already mentioned are definitely on my list of the best games ever.
I still want to make my personal top 100. xD

@BAMozzy Thanks for your reply last night; I just wanted to say that I fully understand and respect your criteria for making your choices (just as I understand and respect everybody else's, because there's no such thing as a "right answer" when it comes to artistic opinion). The reason I mentioned cultural significance was because part of me wished that I could make broader, more informed choices. I've only ever owned Sony consoles (with two small exceptions) and so I've missed out on large chunks of Microsoft, Nintendo, PC and SEGA gaming history. I wanted to semi-explain why my choices were all from PlayStation consoles. Seeing everybody's responses since, however, I'm glad that I went down the personal route.

You're absolutely right when you say that it's tough to have a favourite anything, especially when it comes to games, literature, films, television and music, things designed to tap into or evoke a certain mood. My original list of candidates to put forward was over twenty-strong, and narrowing that down to six was incredibly difficult. I'd imagine most folk here had the same struggle. Whatever helps, whatever works... it's all valid.

I've had poor experiences in other online communities in the past; thanks for reinforcing my opinion that it was the right choice to start posting on Push Square!

@melaneil Yay, somebody put forward a Sonic game! Wouldn't be the same without him!

@Th3solution Just wanted to single out your comments about Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which I completely agree with. I actually think the "lost mission" content made things more confusing; as it stands, the current ending to The Phantom Pain is the perfect bridge to the rest of the storyline, and the feel of the gameplay is unparalleled. Also, thanks for getting Lara Croft into the mix! I felt so guilty, coming so close to adding two of her games, yet cutting them at the last minute.

@RogerRoger Thanks. Yeah, I can see people’s criticism of MGSV is valid with the replaying of past missions on the second half of the game, and the somewhat fragmented nature of the narrative and missions, but in the end it was for me one of those games that had me glued to it and obsessed for a couple weeks, which doesn’t happen real often for me. But to be honest, when we get to later rounds to vote and push comes to shove, I might give the nod to, say ... an Uncharted 4 or Shadow of the Colossus or something over some of my nominees. I just kind of cheated a little and omitted some of my top ones so a few of my other favorites could get some love during the prologue. I’ll have to see what my mood is at the time and hear people’s debate and defense of the games as they champion certain ones to help make a decision. I can be swayed by a good argument

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Nei

Nice choices there guys! My picks

  • Super Metroid (SNES)
  • Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
  • Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
  • Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
  • Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
  • Bayonetta (Xbox360)

Never belligerent but always uncompromising.

Man, this is tuff...
@Fight_Teza_Fight I have a question, if I got it correctly, games like Tlou or TW3 are already in competiton so: Do I need to vote for them if I want them on my list?
PC - Wolfenstein 3D (MS-DOS)
PS2 - Shadow of the Colossus
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy 2
PS4 - Uncharted 4
Multiplat - Red Dead Redemption (PS3)
Multiplat - Assassin's Creed 2 ( PS3)

@DLB3 I believe it’s whatever you consider the best for whatever reason. Crisis Core was one of my picks & that’s a PSP game.

@YeYa Yeah that’s correct. That list works fine, thanks!
