@kyleforrester87 You can't go wrong with Half-Life 2. Back then I played games primarily on PC and I remember spending an offensive amount of money on a video card so I could play it on the best settings.

Unfortunately, I've come to accept that Half Life 3 is never going to happen. The weight of expectation is far too much for anyone at Valve to want to take it on willingly, unless they have a truly revolutionary idea to sit at it's centre. The only other reason it could happen is if Valve need the money, and that certainly won't be the case any time soon.

@AlexStinton I don't really have huge expectations myself, I never really found HL1 and HL2 to be mind blowing, just always felt effortlessly fun to play throughout. I've never really considered that they could get HL3 wrong. I do think we'll see it one day, or at least HL return in some form. But I'm not killing myself either lol.

@AlexStinton I think Half Life 3 is one of those 'damned if they do, damned if they don't' games. There will be purists who want it to be like the originals - albeit with a modern day look, and those that want it to do enough to stand out amongst the other games in the genre - maybe even be a genre defining game. You know that some will ultimately be disappointed but if they try to keep both sides happy, it will end up disappointing both.

A way round it could be to 'reboot' the franchise so that they can almost start from a fresh slate and get away with making the game they want rather than trying to make a game for the fans. Tomb Raider for example managed to do this very well. The fact that we have a lot more FPS games and you could argue that the market has become a little tired of the genre, especially those with a 'sci-fi' background and that its not the right time for a new 'Half Life'. We have seen a shift to more historic based shooters - perhaps because of the 'sci-fi' shooter saturation - although I consider the 'CoD's' to be futuristic more than Sci-Fi but that's splitting hairs I guess.

Sony has dropped 2 of its sci-fi first person shooters (at least for the moment) with Killzone and Resistance and MS's Halo has split the fanbase. I know Titanfall 2 was up against it with its release window and Destiny seems to be losing its battle to keep its fans - although it was similar to Destiny 1 at the same point in that games life cycle too. SW:BF2 has other issues but it seems that overall, the Sci-Fi shooter is on the decline. I guess Half Life 3 'could' reverse the trend but it could also end up missing the mark too...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

I've really enjoyed reading people's replies thusfar, whilst I've wrestled with my own list.

With huge respect to everybody's unique approach to this megapoll, I'm afraid I can't be the bigger man and make choices based upon wider cultural impact; I simply don't feel qualified enough to be the judge for all gaming. I know what I like, and I know why I'm here. The titles below are therefore my personal favourites and, since my opinions always seem to be a little out-of-sync with everybody else, they're likely to be quite random and perhaps even disagreeable (I'm really not trolling, honest).

Anyway, nervous rambling aside, here are the games that mean the most to me, the games I find most enjoyable to play, and the games I therefore consider to be the best.

  • Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (PSone)
  • James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (PlayStation2)
  • Batman: Arkham Origins (PlayStation3)
  • Mass Effect 3 (PlayStation3)
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn (PlayStation4)
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (PlayStation4)

Games that didn't quite make the cut, but I still wanna mention, include Star Trek Invasion (PSone), Tomb Raider III: The Adventures of Lara Croft (PSone), Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend (PlayStation2), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation3), Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (PlayStation3) and Batman: Arkham Knight (PlayStation4).

@RogerRoger Interesting that you chose Arkham Origins over the other three, although I can see why. Arkham Knight was overall the best package for me, but I think that the story in Origins was probably the most impactful one on me and that's simply due to the origin of Joker's and Batman's 'love/hate' relationship. I was such in awe during those scenes and then the story became even better when we saw the origins of Joker and Harley, his 'other lover'. Amazing moments of the origin story of the Batman series overall.

Best games as voted by the PushSquare community:
PS1: Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy IX, Tomb Raider II

@RogerRoger Almost voted for Horizon as well! It's good to see the game is getting votes regardless.

@RogerRoger It always make for a more surprising and therefore interesting list when it's more personal. So, I like that about your list. My gaming taste is a bit more vanilla unfortunately, so even though it'll be a very personal list, it'll hardly turn any heads.

Wind's howling.

Wow, um... okay, little bit overwhelmed by how nice you guys are, thank you! It's taken me years to return to the internet and take part in a community. I was always laughed at, argued with or dismissed as a troll for "having the wrong opinions" whenever something like this came around. Guess I was just hanging out in the wrong crowds!

It pained me not to be able to vote for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, though, I must say. I've played through it three times and I think I've cried even more each time. Six choices isn't enough!

@KratosMD You've summarised my internal struggle perfectly. I couldn't decide which of the two, Origins or Knight, to put forward. Thankfully, the rules of the contest helped (I simply had to put my name against Horizon and Uncharted 4, and that used up my two PS4 votes) but I also really wanted to champion Origins for the reasons you've stated. There's so much focus on the launch problems it encountered, it detracted from the utterly incredible story, flawless music (with respect to Nick Arundel and the others who've contributed to the series, Christopher Drake knocked it out of the park with a relentless powerhouse of a score) and cinematic flair (the boss fight against Firefly remains one of my favourite boss fights of all time... not for being particularly clever, but just for being spectacular). The relationship between Batman and the Joker has been explored to death in the comics, in film, on television and in games, but I think Origins really is the definitive version.

@Kidfried As long as it's personal, I think that's what counts. If you're comfortable doing so, maybe explain why each game means so much to you; that'd certainly make me pay attention, for sure.

@RogerRoger My list was more cultural and based on the impact those games had on the industry as a whole. That being said, it doesn't make it any more valid than your list based on your own personal opinion. At the end of the day, the point was to vote for the 6 best games based on what ever criteria you applied to come to that decision. If you found it easier to create your top six based on personal experience, then that is equally as valid as me choosing my 6 based on the games that had the biggest impact on gaming or culturally importance.

There is NO right or wrong criteria, no right or wrong games you could pick, no judgement that can be levied at you for YOUR choices - its up to you as to why those 6 were chosen and you don't even have to 'justify' your choices. You don't even have to stick to one criteria for all your choices but could pick 6 games, each chosen for completely different reasons.

I like to explain my choices but again that is my choice and not required at all. In my case, I think it helps to explain why games like Goldeneye and Halo:CE made my list when there are clearly better FPS games nowadays. I couldn't personally pick my 'favourite' all time games because I don't have favourites - its a lot like trying to pick your favourite songs of all time - something else I can't do because I like so many tracks and can get something 'special' from so many - depending on mood, circumstance or 'need' at that time. Therefore I had to be way more objective and look at games from the aspect of their impact on gaming in a more general way than just their impact on me at that point as the main criteria - it was what I needed to do to come up with 6 with no more than 2 from the same platform but as I said that was my method of evaluating the choices I picked but its not the only method and its no more valid than whatever method you used.

No one has the right to judge or criticise your method or your choices. No one can say your opinions are out of sync with others as its 'your' choice, your opinion, and your method.

That was tough, 6 games per platform wouldn't even have been easy, but here goes:

Sonic The Hedgehog (Megadrive)
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (PC)
Silent Hill (PS1)
SSX Tricky (PS2)
LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
Ratchet & Clank (PS4)

I’ve created a few versions of this list in my mind. Many games are neck and neck to be considered for nomination. It’s splitting hairs at this point. A good many that I would consider to be on my list are already mentioned a few times and are assured a spot in round 2. So, since there are several approaches I could take, I have come up with the following 6, all of which I don’t think have been nominated yet:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - PS4
This is just a personal choice. Many people did not like this game, but for some reason I found it utterly addictive and the gameplay and story was top notch. A large departure from the MGS formula, I feel like it moved the franchise forward, but yet kept the spirit of Metal Gear intact. What can I say? I loved the game. And that includes the polarizing story, which I found very entertaining and contains an epic ending that left my jaw on the floor and connected Big Boss’s story back to the original classic Metal Gear Solid game where it all began.
Persona 5 - PS4
Not sure how no one has chosen this game yet. One could argue it improved on P4Golden in nearly every way. Since it won Push Square’s GOTY recently, I’ll just keep it at that.
Tomb Raider (2013) - PS3
Lara Croft is the First Lady of gaming, and one of her games deserves to be in the running. This one is the best, imo. A departure from the early games and a reinvention, it is a blast to play and I really like how Lara has been developed as a character.
Skyrim - PS3
How can this not be considered one of the best games of all time? It’s been on nearly every console now, republished over and over. I played it on the PS3 and had never played an Elder Scrolls game before. I didn’t know if I’d like the first person style and heavy reliance on inventory management, but ended up loving this game and played it for many many hours. I still have the Gregorian chant style theme song as one of my ringtones.
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - PS2
Very highly rated game at the time and I poured a lot of time into it. Basically I have not enjoyed racing games much since this game. There was something addictive about collecting the cars and making money on the circuit. Just good memories as a young lad.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 - PS2
A strange choice, I know. But it only seems strange because they ran the series into the ground and the TH games after this became worse and worse until they devolved into absolute garbage. In actuality, before the rapid decline of the skating game genre, THPS3 was riding high at the very pinnacle of gaming on the world’s most popular console at the time. Need more evidence?... THPS3 is tied for the PS2 game with the highest Metacritic score (97%) along with GTA3. We forget how awesome, addictive, and innovative it was.

@Th3solution I have Persona 5 at #3 of favorite games of this gen. Couldn't put it above Bloodborne and Uncharted 4, but I think all these games including The Witcher 3 are the pinnacle of their respective genres. I'm glad you voted for it though .Just goes to show how strong this generation has been.

You guys are choosing the contenders now, then the competition will start, right?

Many of my favorite games are already on the competition, but these are the games that I choose:

Demon's Souls (PS3)
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2, PS3, PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Chrono Trigger (multi)
Okami (multi)

These games, also many of the games already mentioned are definitely on my list of the best games ever.
I still want to make my personal top 100. xD

Thanks @Fight_Teza_Fight
