@Th3solution They had Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild in there (Nintendo exclusives) and Persona and Horizon (Sony exclusives), so that's not a problem at all. It's basically just about 50 gaming sites that get a vote, so anything can happen.

@Kidfried Call me cynical, but I’m not sure the democratic process will hold up behind the scenes when they need to ensure viewers for their awards show. If there are no Nintendo games nominated, I suspect viewership would take a hit. (Gee ... I wonder why I sound so distrustful about the elective process. 😉)

@beemo Depends on what you call a good reason. For them it's viewers and potential advertisers. Interest in video games is much higher in a time when people are buying a lot of them: the month before Christmas.

You didn't expect it to be anymore than that, did you?

@Th3solution I get where you're coming from. The jury is not a group of outlets selected by objective standards, and it is striking to say the least that Easy Allies, Kinda Funny and What's Good Games are talking non-stop about how good the announcements of the Game Awards going to be on their podcast shows. That's no coincidence of course, these people all have a stake in this thing. It's the moneygoround.

Still, I don't think the Nintendo viewership is that important to them, that they are willing to nominate a Nintendo game for the sake of it. But, I'll accept your bet: aside from Celeste there will not be a single nomination for a game playable on a Nintendo platform.

@Kidfried There were 52 outlets part of last year's jury. So they contain most big outlets you can think of; Eurogamer, Edge, Famitsu, Kotaku, PC Gamer, IGN, Game Informer, etc. Easy Allies got in because they're friends with Geoff Keighley, and they're not that small, and many know them from GameTrailers. And wasn't Kyle Bosman a host last year or the year before?

I don't think the outlets are payed or anything like that. They vote, and that's it.

@Octane The outlets may not be paid, but don’t you think once they look at the results, if the games that are the top five don’t look like they are diverse enough to garner public interest, that they’ll just dip down into #6 or #7 on the list and move it up to be sure there is equal representation?
As an example, I used to like Kinda Funny in the early days with Colin and Greg when they were heavy on PlayStation and PS I love you XOXO, but after a while they became more diverse, Colin left, etc and when I would try to listen to their podcast, it was 30-50% Nintendo, 20-40% Xbox, and 20-40% PlayStation. Apparently they felt in order to achieve maximal audience, they had to include all the consoles. In my opinion, KF has become worthless this way because they just seem to scratch the surface now and don’t really delve deep into game discussion of anything beyond the top few games of each console. Anyways, the point is, the Game Awards is sure to try to pander to the Switch, Xbox, PC, and PS crowd and so no matter what the outlets vote, I’m betting that there will be some Nintendo representation. Maybe not Xbox though because nominating Sea of Thieves for GOTY would invalidate the entire show. Of course there is Forza. Not sure a racing game would stir enough interest though.

@Th3solution Look at the 2016 nominees: DOOM, Inside, Overwatch, Titanfall 2 and Uncharted 4. No Nintendo. If Smash had released a bit earlier it would be on there, but Nintendo simply hasn't released anything that could possibly be GOTY this year. I think most Nintendo fans know that as well. Besides, there is still ''best family game'' or something like that, and Mario Party will win for sure. In the end, you can see the games the outlets voted on, and you can also count them, so if there's something off, people will know. Besides, I don't even think a Nintendo game would get 6th or 7th place this year. They went from a great year in 2017, to almost nothing worthwhile this year.

Same applies to Microsoft, putting Sea of Thieves or State of Decay on there would just look silly. Maybe Forza, but I don't think a racing game has ever been nominated for GOTY.

I think it's going to be:
1. God of War
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. Celeste
4. Assassin's Creed Odyssey
5. Monster Hunter World

All of these 5 got a nominee, so I did pretty good. Only this year they have 6 nominees, so I missed out on Spider-Man.

Same goes for Octane, who also did a nice job naming five correct nominees.

Th3solution wrote:

-God of War
-Red Dead Redemption 2
-Call of Duty 4 (can’t ignore the ridiculous sales)
-Octopath Traveler (I feel like there has to be a Nintendo exclusive thrown in to even things out politically and I think this seems to be the only one close enough to be considered)
-Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

3 correct!

Nope!

I won the bet!

Kidfried

Octane

@Kidfried Yeah, it's not fair. Nobody told us there were going to be six nominees!

Octane

Kidfried

@Octane I feel like there was no need for a sixth nominee anyway. We already know that GOTY is between only two games. Not because it was a bad year for gaming, but just because these two games are way ahead of the competition.

Last year, you could at least make an argument for any of the five.

@Kidfried I totally missed on this one. So much for my theory that the awards are corrupt!

Okay, I'm gonna place my bets on PS5 coming out in 2019. Here's my line of reasoning. PS3 and vita games are getting dropped for PS Plus. I think they might be doing it so PS5 (and maybe PSVR games) can replace them. I would't be surprised if it wasn't an end of year release either, but possibly a summer release, with a blockbuster game at the end of the year to get sales back up.
I also see GoT and Death Stranding being cross-generation games at this point too. Maybe even last of us.

Jaz007

Octane

@Jaz007 I'll take that bet! Early 2020, with a PSX reveal and everything. No E3 next year. And Knack 3!

Octane

Th3solution

@Jaz007 I go back and forth on the PS5. I’ve been thinking 2020 though. But I can be convinced otherwise. I think we’ve seen what a poor predictor I am, so I’ll not venture an official guess.

Kidfried

@Jaz007 Cancellation of E3 equals no PS5 in 2019 if you'd ask me.

Kidfried

Jaz007

@Kidfried Unless it’s because they’ll have shown everything off before hand by a few months for the PS5 launch preparation. If it comes out before E3 it would be hard to have a good E3 show and generate proper hype. I can’t imagine any other good reason unless someone was doing the good stuff when they made that decision.

2020 with the last of us 2 as a swansong just like last gen

They'll both come out before tlou 2. I mean, I have no information on this, nor have I read any rumors on tlou2 release date, I'm just saying it's a possibility and it would be interesting.

Anyway, there are rumors that Sony delayed ps5 from 2019 to 2020 because of software and that hardware is ready for 2019. By software they mean os, games and maybe the most important backwards compatibility. Allegedly, Sony only started thinking about backwards compatibility in 2017 so they need more time to implement it.

next year looks good for games, but I'm not sure about 2020 besides holiday part when next gen should launch. Seems like people with huge backlogs will get some time to work on them

So.. care to do a game of who can guess the most game awards announcements?

Maybe I'll make something of a list or something later tonight.
