@Octane Well, they need to improve the chassis anyway - the screen itself could be a higher quality panel and maintain the dimensions of the gen1.

Or the bezel could flare out a bit to the sides....?

@KALofKRYPTON Well, they could definitely remove the bezel. Either way, I don't really expect a huge improvement whenever they're doing one. It's the only console you can't easily improve without messing with all the other stuff.

Octane

KALofKRYPTON

@Octane hmmm - I'd say that the screen, battery and JoyCons could all be improved easily.

@KALofKRYPTON Remember that we're talking about the company that could have easily released three new F-Zero games by now!

Octane

KALofKRYPTON

@Octane they could have. But why bother developing a new racing game in house that would likely eat in to potential sales of the nearly five year old Mario Kart 8, which at this point is probably generating almost 100% profit 😂

@KALofKRYPTON Yeah, you could even argue they don't need to release a Mario Kart game even. They turned the Wii U flops around into success in a business wise brilliant way.

If that Star Fox racer is still coming along (?), that could make a huge splash. And they are surely going to make a big profit on their other 2019 games.

I may often complain about Nintendo, because they surely took steps that alienated me personally, but what they did was so smart.

Octane

@Kidfried It would be disappointing after all those years if all Retro worked on was a Star Fox racing game!

Octane

KALofKRYPTON

@Octane @Kidfried That would be pretty funny actually...

@Kidfried Mind if I ask what Nintendo did to alienate you personally?

@KALofKRYPTON I am actually super hyped about the possibility of a Star Fox game coming from Retro actually. No matter the genre, I trust them with everything I got.

@KALofKRYPTON Considering Mario Kart and F-Zero are barley in the same genre, I’m not sure it would affect sales more than releasing any other exclusive might, simply due to the fact that it’s another game people could spend money on.

Putting this out here: only about half of the PlayStation Classic's line-up will be the icons we expect, Metal Gear Solid and Tomb Raider will probably be missing, and the rest will be obscure cult games or stuff that was only popular in Japan.

I don't think I can count this as a win, but some of what I said with regard to missing icons (no Crash, no Gran Turismo, specifically no Tomb Raider) was kinda on the money.

Happy to be wrong about Metal Gear Solid. Everybody should play that game!

Also, congratulations to @Kidfried for accurately guessing that Twisted Metal would feature on the console, but that WipEout would be missing, and respect to @JohnnyShoulder for predicting the different selection of games for the Japanese market.

@RogerRoger Wow, I totally forgot I made that prediction. That was super smart of me! Thanks for looking that up.

New prediction: Hitman 2 is going to be November's best reviewed game.

RogerRoger

@Kidfried My pleasure; credit always where credit is due, and I think it's the most accurate prediction we've had about the PlayStation Classic!

And I think I agree with you. The potential return of the always-online component may knock a few points off from critics who have a specific opinion on that particular subject (depending on whether it's still the case and how stable IO have managed to make their servers) but I predict many 9s and maybe even a few 10s, if the other levels are as deep as Miami.

@RogerRoger Thanks for the mention, i too had totally forgotten about my prediction!

Next week the nominations for the Game Awards get in. We'll discuss who deserves to win somewhere else, but let's try to see if we can guess the list of nominees.

I think it's going to be:
1. God of War
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
3. Celeste
4. Assassin's Creed Odyssey
5. Monster Hunter World

Kidfried

Octane

@Kidfried No Spider-Man?

God of War, Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey & Celeste... I think.

Are remakes like Shadow of the Colossus allowed?

Octane

Kidfried

@Octane I think pretty much everything is allowed, as long as it gets the most votes. But I think many gaming outlets won't vote on Shadow, because it being a remake.

Also, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is a glorified got nominated last year for best racing game. So, there isn't any restrictions.

Th3solution

If we’re predicting GOTY candidates, I actually would guess something like this (I think they typically have 5?):

-God of War
-Red Dead Redemption 2
-Call of Duty 4 (can’t ignore the ridiculous sales)
-Octopath Traveler (I feel like there has to be a Nintendo exclusive thrown in to even things out politically and I think this seems to be the only one close enough to be considered)
-Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

I think Spider-Man and Detroit will unfortunately be left out, despite probably being deserving, simply to keep balance and from getting too Sony exclusive heavy.
Monster Hunter and Far Cry 5 will just miss out, but are possible candidates. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see Fallout 76, not because of any perception of it being actually deserving, but because of the politics of the whole thing.
