@ShadowRJ What about all the shovelware released on discs and cartridges?😆 Just because it’s physical doesn’t mean more engagement.

@nessisonett - I think at most FF6 and Chrono Trigger could get 2.5HD remakes. As someone else mentioned, just add some QoL enhancements maybe voice acting or even some cutscenes (pixel style obviously) but keep the same battle system.

@WorldsAway - I wouldn’t called the Day After the “American Threads”, it didn’t go anywhere near as hard as Threads. Threads also took more a documentary route and told the story across a couple decades. I think The Day After only really covered the weeks and months after the bombs dropped.

But definitely both movies helped pushed the nuclear powers to sign treaties to reduce armaments. Maybe we need that again!

@WorldsAway - The Day After Tomorrow and Threads are great movies. The Day After Tomorrow to me represented a fairly recoverable scenario, while Threads was a worst case scenario.

@get2sammyb - The Switch 2 will still be the cheaper option compared to a PS6 or Helix

@Balaam_ While they don’t have as many strong IP’s as Nintendo, don’t discount the other entertainment franchises they own. I think they’ll be fine not being primarily an electronics manufacturer.

@MrGawain - The fetch quests are going to be optional in this game, assuming their side quests.

@Dalamar - It sounds like they do know what they’re doing because they’re responding to feedback and looking at ways to reduce the the on screen clutter.

@WhatTheFrog - While I will miss physical media and hope Sony reverses course, I don’t think they’re feeling as humiliated as people want them to be. The consumer has been choosing digital, but I agree work needs to be done to ensure we always have a method to access our purchases.

Geez. A lot of the comments make it seem like SquareEnix deleted the original game from existence and is forcing everyone to play the trilogy. Lots of dramatic reactions here over a video game. 😆

@Bramble - I’m that guy who will often speed through the mainline of the story and ignore side quests if they don’t add value to the story or are worthwhile quests. It depends on the game, but I mainly do this just because I have limited time to play games.

@DennisReynolds - It’s an interesting way for them to protest Sony ditching physical media, and at the same time proving Sony’s point that nobody is buying physical media at the same time.

This is looking amazing, hopefully there is a setting to turn the voices off during battle. I may just turn the voices off altogether so it feels more retro.

@PercyChuggs - So the moral of the story is you’ve never played a PS Portal.

@PercyChuggs - You call it novelty, I call it comfort and convenience. Reduced screen? You play your steam deck games on a “reduced screen.” I also haven’t experienced noticeable input lag as my PS5 is hardwired into my router.

I’m sure the Steam Deck is a fantastic device, but the PS Portal is a great device for $200.

@PercyChuggs - Yeah but using the Portal to play my PS5 in a different room is awesome, sometimes I like to play in bed as I wind down.

@NoHope - Agreed, you can buy a DVD drive to connect via USB to your laptop. This is not comparable to a game console. Honestly even in the late 2000’s when I had a disc drive I rarely used it.

@Oram77 - I hope the future of digital is the ability to lend, sell, buy and trade game entitlements in some manner.

@trev666 - Hopefully the backlash over going away from physical does push them into creating an entitlements system where users can lend other users an entitlement for a game or even sell the entitlement.

While I do like physical media, your stance isn’t wrong. These games will be available somewhere, you might just have to look for them differently.

@Blaze215 - Save the receipt that your purchased it. Now that we’re in the digital era, you’re buying a license to play a game. To me that receipt is evidence of that license.

@Zaczumba - That’s bold of you to assume that a working game would have been shipped on that disc, considering a lot of games get Day 1 updates.

Even if this was released on a disc, it is going to probably get a Day 1 update and multiple updates over the next decade. Having the disc would be pointless.

@Boxmonkey - Agreed! If anyone complains on the price they can wait for the PS6 re-release in 2030 for $69.99 😆. A game this big, detailed and costing a significant amount to create needs to recoup that investment.

@Danbottomburp - Not really. More gameplay later on, it’s a lot of story setup in the first hour or so.

@Marquez - I agree with you 100%. I think the biggest struggle right now with AI is that companies are unleashing it on to the world without training anyone on its proper use and how to apply guardrails.

@Americansamurai1 - As someone who works at a company that’s embracing AI, AI isn’t going to be a job killer soon. It’s not as implemented as companies want us to believe. Most recent layoffs just use AI as an excuse so they can get rid of the high salaries from the pandemic and hire people back at lower salaries.

@CielloArc COVID definitely exposed weaknesses in global supply chains, but most acute bottlenecks (chips, shipping delays, port backups) have largely normalized. Today’s pressures are more about tariffs, geopolitical instability, and energy costs than factories shutting down from COVID.

@CielloArc - Eh, the vast majority of issues from COVID has been resolved now. 2023 and 2024 everyone was basically caught up and back to normal. What we’re seeing now are supply chain issues from AI and the war in Iran.

@Sketti - I doubt he’s doing 40 full play thoughs as a gamer would. He’s still doing work, so I would be very surprised if he’s not using any of the dev or testing tools to speed up the play throughs when necessary.

Keep in mind, he’s likely playing this game in their dev/qa environment so he probably has tools/features that allow him to jump around the game quicker than a normal play through. Whether that’s just enabling cheats or actually jumping to different parts of the game.

@Oram77 There are similarities to FFX, but Expedition 33 had more strategy to when/how to execute moves and limited you in which spells and attacks you can use. The only thing similar to FFX was seeing who’s turn was next.

@IntrepidWombat - Probably 2027, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got it holiday 2026. They had most of the assets done from Rebirth and they were doing development as Rebirth released.

The author of this article completely missed the point of how much of an impact playing games on the original (recreated) hardware has on nostalgia. It’s not the same playing these games on PS5, unless perhaps if you use Neo Geo controllers on the PS5.

@johnedwin - I’m playing the Switch 2 version now, outside of Diana’s hair not rendered perfectly, it looks great and runs perfectly. I could have got the PS5 version, but when I played the Switch 2 Demo it was a significant difference.

@ThatOtherNewGuy - Yearly? The same people complaining about the price of PS5 are not buying a new phone yearly. If they are they’re trading in their phone, or have some sort of contract to get a yearly upgrade. Most people are keeping phones 2-5 years these days, as phones don’t have significant annual updates like they did 15+ years ago.

@carlos82 - A crash seems pretty sensational, but I can definitely see the PS6 sales struggling bigly if they chose to release in 2027. They may need to consider waiting until RAM production can catch up to AI demand or the AI bubble to deflate a bit.

Maybe deeper discounts are offered to people who haven’t purchased anything for awhile? Or maybe vice versa?

@Gedrick - Honestly, it’s probably a good way to get someone who hasn’t played a sports game from that franchise to try out the most recent version for cheap. If that person likes 2K25 they may end up buying 2K26.

@UltimateOtaku91 - Lollers “things are going to get worse for Nintendo.” You act like the Switch 2 had a Wii U level of decline in sales. If Nintendo produces great games, the console will sell itself… unless it goes up some obnoxious amount in price.

@Rich33 - Why would anything be set in stone if there is a delay? That gives them more time to reevaluate what tech would be available around their delayed target date. If we’re talking 2028 as a target release, then sure the specs are probably solidified by now or will be soon. But if they’re expecting 2029 or 2030, I would hope they’d have some alternatives so they’re not releasing underwhelming hardware.

@Rich33 - Just because it gets delayed to 2028 or beyond doesn’t mean that the specs won’t be barely above the PS5 Pro. It’s plausible to consider that they take into account that the extra time in release means they can provide a more powerful console.

@Porco - I agree with you. I think Nintendo did it the right way, they went 8 years before releasing new hardware. They pushed the Switch until the hardware sales started to trail off before finally releasing new hardware. People were begging for the past 5 years for a pro model or a hard refresh. Sony needs to do something similar, hold out until PS5 sales start declining and people are begging for new hardware.
