Re: PS Plus Essential, Extra, Premium Price Increases Announced by Sony

evan23

I am glad I converted all plus and still have almost 9 years left.

This seems like a pretty steep increase to me. Especially for essential. It is 33-35% at all tiers. Extra and premium are being brought in-line with the GP price increases so I can kind of understand those.

It seems like people who don't care about online will drop essential altogether.

Re: PS5 Fans Divided on PlayStation Portal Handheld

evan23

If you happen to have a need for the limited ways this can be used, the next concern is performance.

Historically, Remote Play has not been very good even on a local network. If that is the same system being used with the portal, I think people are going to be disappointed unless their expectations are suitably low.

I definitely wouldn't recommend pre-ordering this until there is solid information on real world performance.

Re: PlayStation Portal Is Sony's PS5 Remote Play Handheld, Priced at $200 / £200

evan23

The price seems reasonable given it is a first party product. Certainly cheaper than I expected.

However, it has a pretty limited market I think.

  • You need to have a PS5
  • You have to be a person who wants to game on a mobile device while at home
  • It needs to be in a situation where the heat and noise from the PS5 will not be an issue

I can see some use cases:

  • Someone who wants to play games while still engaging with others(I couldn't do this)
  • A situation where there is contention for the TV but not the PS5
  • Gaming in a different room. i.e. Playing some games in bed
  • A need to play without disturbing someone else

That being said, since I don't have any of those needs, I will probably pass.

Re: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Is Being Ported Backwards to Decade-Old PS4

evan23

@haoie It did sell well actually.

As for the performance, don't forget one of the big reasons for the low internal resolutions on the PS5/XSX was due to the fact that it had baked in RT. Hopefully they will make it at least playable.

On the PS4, that obviously won't be there so that should help with getting it to run on the lesser hardware. It also probably be a fixed 30fps.

Re: Reaction: What Happens to PlayStation if Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard?

evan23

I think the biggest change is that it will put Sony and Microsoft on a more even footing in the console space. If that is good or bad will depend on perspective.

The days of all the good exclusives being on PS are probably over but this is hardly the first time in the history of consoles where that has been the case.

Personally, I don't think this will result in any drastic changes. My hope is it will force Sony into a spot where it feels pressured to start making more consumer-friendly decisions to compete.

Re: New PS Store Essential Picks Sale Has 1,400 PS5, PS4 Game Discounts

evan23

@Wheatly

What is my previously held belief that I am confirming with my reading of the available data?

I think the idea is that you went in believing that "they seem to want to only discount the really expensive versions of games while the normal version remains full price."

If you verified this by checking some games and seeing this to be the case, that could be confirmation bias depending on the method used.

To be clear, I am not claiming that is what happened in this case because I have no idea how you verified it. I do think that confirmation bias is possible in this situation though.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@number1024

but what Microsoft has done, games that were planned for multi play release and then they lock that away...yeah, that's just morally wrong.

You and a few others have stated this but I don't really follow this logic.

If a company uses money to buy exclusivity it makes no practical difference when they do so. Ultimately, it is all the same. The difference is purely an emotional one.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@number1024 I don't really understand this line of thinking.

Both companies pay for both timed and permanent exclusives.

Both companies buy studios to gain exclusivity.

Both companies have their own self interests in mind when doing these things.

Other people have stated this above multiple times but neither of these companies are angels acting on behalf of the community.

Speaking logically, exclusivity is bad. It is anti-consumer behavior no matter how you look at it. People are splitting hairs based on the mechanism to achieve it but it all comes down to the same thing. Without exclusives, all that would matter is who could put together the most compelling hardware solution at the best cost. It would also create competition between the stores. All things that benefit consumers.

Thinking emotionally, I like the idea of exclusives. It makes the platform and the hardware matter and makes the market a more interesting place. It also brings back fond memories of the days when a much greater percentage of the games were exclusive. Of course, as with most emotional arguments, it is logically flawed.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@Cutmastavictory Unfortunately, one of the flaws with this platform is I don't know which of my comments you are responding to.

If you are referring to the original one at the top, it was a joke.

If you are referring to the one about competition, I think it is better for the exclusives to be spread more evenly between the big 3 competitors than to be heavily focused on just two of them as has recently been the case.

Re: Indiana Jones Game Deal Amended to Exclude PS5, PS4

evan23

@thefourfoldroot1 I suppose one reason would be that after years of being locked out of great games they would finally have some decent exclusives coming their way.

Personally, I am a multi-platform gamer so I have no stake in the console wars but even as someone who is console agnostic, it is clear that Sony in recent years has been killing Microsoft on the exclusives front. Things were bound to equalize eventually.

We are now moving towards a situation where all 3 major platforms have numerous exclusives and I think that actually helps competition overall.

Re: You'll Need Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Digital Deluxe Edition for Those Extra PS5 Suits

evan23

I can't stop myself from buying the deluxe edition of games anyway so it makes no difference to me.

On the other hand, I am getting better at waiting until games drop in price before I buy them. My backlog is so absurd that waiting won't really hurt me much even though I am really looking forward to this one. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind between now and the time it comes out.

Re: Apparently Some People Hate the New PS5, PS4 Prince of Persia Game

evan23

I don't really care either way but my first reaction when watching it was that someone made a game and then decided to make it a "Prince of Persia" game after the fact.

The art style and the fact that you aren't even playing the prince but rescuing him make it feel not like a Prince of Persia game.

I don't really understand why people care so much what music is used in the trailer.

Re: Soapbox: PS Plus Might Be Gaming's Best Subscription Service Now

evan23

The comments above are fairly interesting.

Which service is better for an individual seems to depend on a mix of factors which include:

  • How important access to newly released games is
  • What types of games you play(Different genres are better represented on each platform)
  • How much time you spend playing games
  • How frequently you also buy games

The first two seem to be the biggest drivers.

I am currently still paying almost nothing(less than $4/mo) for game pass and honestly even at that price it isn't worth it to me.

On the other hand, from reading the comments, I can see how it would be completely worth it to others based on the types of games they play and the way they like to consume them.

Re: Soapbox: PS Plus Might Be Gaming's Best Subscription Service Now

evan23

@Tharsman

I understand (well not really, but accept)_that PS will never launch their games day one, but would like at least a commitment for their games to all enter the service after a year, and stay there. Spider-Man leaving was not encouraging.

Yes, I agree with this entirely.

Even if they can, they shouldn't remove 1st party content.

As a side note, how did you indent that quote in your earlier response.

Re: Soapbox: PS Plus Might Be Gaming's Best Subscription Service Now

evan23

For me, PS Plus is orders of magnitude better.

I have had game pass for over 2 years. I can barely ever find anything I want to play there. When my sub expires, I won't be renewing.

With PS plus, I have a backlog of interesting games available to me.

There are a few reasons for the difference in my case.

  • I tend to enjoy single player narrative-driven games. There are very few of these on game pass.
  • I have limited time available to play games so quality is way more important than quantity.
  • I am not desperate to play games on day 1. I always carry a backlog so I am never short of games to play.
  • If there is a game that I have been desperately waiting for that I must play day 1 I would probably rather buy it anyway.

That being said, there are still things I would like to see Sony improve on. The biggest ones are:

  • Don't remove 1st party content from the service
  • Add some value to the wasteland that is Premium

Re: Talking Point: Is 2024 Too Soon for PS5 Pro?

evan23

I think there is a market for a PS5 Pro but it will not be for everyone.

I think it will not be about resolution, it will be about support for more ray-tracing. As ray-tracing becomes increasingly baked into future titles as is likely to happen with ray-traced lightning, there will be people who are willing to pay for better performance/visuals.
