Makes you wonder just how out of touch the execs at EA are. They probably looked at the low numbers for Andromeda and concluded that Mass Effect doesn't sell anymore. But any gamer who's actually engaged in the community and has an interest would've known a remastered trilogy is a no-brainer and would guarantee sales. I heard that the trilogy only came about because of the initiative of Mac Walters. Now the execs are blindsided by the success of this no-brainer hit. Goes to show that execs need to actually be gamers themselves for effective business decision-making.
I've not been into the Playstation sphere during the first half of PS4, but as a normal gamer I don't really see them being all that secretive. I remember the old days and compared to that we have State of Plays, blogs, twitter, etc. That's plenty of communication channels. It makes sense to talk about coming releases and show them off once the company feels confident and ready. Also remember that we are in a pandemic, so that will have an impact also. And on top of that, I bet that the entire organization is larger than in previous generations, so trying to coordinate it all and making communication work properly will be a huge challenge.
Another thing is that nowadays with all these youtubers who do nothing but scour the internet for leaks and the latest information, every day of every week, it might seem like Sony is buttoned up and silent, when in reality the community is actually overly attentive. Sony isn't here to feed the content creator pipeline, they're here to develop games and products for Playstation users.
It's just good business sense to support a large platform like the PS4 if you have the chance to do it. The growth of the PS5 user base is hampered by the shortage and resulting rampant scalping. It's not like the PS5 needs God of War 2 in order to generate interest in the console, they're selling every unit they're producing. I suppose people could be miffed that the "believing in generations" comment should've meant that PS5 games would be too amazing to be on PS4, but I'm pretty sure Horizon 2 and God of War 2 will be perfectly amazing games, and once PS5 owners get their hands on them, they'll be satisfied with the final product. If anything, I'm hopeful that this could mean 60fps modes for these titles on PS5.
And with games like Demon's Souls and Ratchet and Clank and Returnal, Sony has already run circles around Xbox in terms of providing great next-gen only titles.
Loving the game so far, but I hoped this patch would address screen tearing on (base) PS4 when in framerate mode. It's the only blemish on what's been a super enjoyable experience so far
Hoping that base PS4 will be 60fps. I would still get it if it was 30fps but since this is still using UE3, I got my hopes up. So ready to finally go through the entire trilogy. I played 2 first, then started over with 1, played 2 and all its DLC and stopped around the first third of 3 (even though I was enjoying myself) and never picked it up again.
I've been primarily a PC gamer since the early 2000s, only got into PS4 gaming in 2019. When there's a game with an option of running at 60FPS, I'm always going to prefer that, but especially the 1st party titles on PS4 that are well optimized and have perfect frame pacing (God of War, TLOU2, etc) feel "smooth" enough that I'm not hung up on the performance. It's with choppy framerates and pacing that I lose my enjoyment.
Games of 2020 that I even got were Spelunky 2 and TLoU2 but I haven't even gotten into TLoU2 yet. I'm still working through my backlog. Going through Witcher 3 and Persona 5 (not Royal) playing them really slowly. When will I ever be done with these??
I think I've honestly never been as hyped for a game as I'm for Cyberpunk 2077. I would totally preorder the game and any expansion pass they might offer, but I'm too worried it would run badly on PS4, or have serious graphical fidelity downgrades. I mean sure PS4 is able to process the amazing graphics of a Spider-man or God of War, even Red Dead Redemption 2, but Cyberpunk 2077 looks like a grade above those because not just is the density of detail extremely high, but the simulation of the world (NPC schedules, emergent behaviors, verticality of the game world, etc) also looks to be a grade above current gen. I'm going to wait for the reviews to properly inform me about the performance.
People seem to be very on board with their decision, and if it's true that Sony has beef with ESA, then I can understand their decision. But remember E3 2013? When Sony presented their $399 price point mere hours (or was it a day?) after Microsoft underwhelmed with Kinect and $499? This was probably THE defining moment in the pre-release phase console war the cemented the narrative and influenced the start of the generation. Sure, Sony can't count on something like this happening again, but just there mere opportunity to emphatically show themselves as the better choice at the same event can be worth it surely?
@GigaGaia I really enjoyed the Witcher 1 and could see real, raw ambition. If you play that game on its terms (you'd have to forgive the jankiness and pacing issues) you'll find a game that is kind of maximalist in terms of writing and questing. Witcher 2 was the attempt to take that ambition and channel it towards a deeper choice & consequence approach to the main campaign. In both cases, CDPR shows real ambition to do something few other RPG studios do.
I'm expecting a thoughtfully designed world space with plenty of Cyberpunk atmosphere and Deus Ex style gameplay but with the freedom of an open world like Witcher 3 (though swapping horizontal for vertical spatial scope).
I'm hoping for a narrative and side missions that deal with the themes of dystopia sci-fi, boundless capitalism, gender issues and all that stuff in a mature, thought-provoking manner. (Also I'm hoping for a steady 30FPS performance on base PS4)
Even if the game only achieves the former, it should still be a good time. If it achieves the latter too, we could easily have another contender for game of the generation on our hands. I'm too old to get caught in the hype machine, I got burned a few times too many (Bioshock Infinite, etc)
@RogerRoger Honestly I think Joel looks a lot older in TLOU2. In the first game, sure, he has deeper wrinkles, but he still looked like not far from his prime as a man. In this trailer, he looked like a grandpa and I think he'll be less agile in action now. He seems like he spent the last few years mostly chilling, not doing so much smuggling anymore, as he and Ellie seem to have been able to live in a stable community where the younger ones can take care of the more dangerous work.
