The original Gears of War trilogy was probably my favorite multiplayer game ever, but the more recent games turned it into an annoying, microtransaction-filled gacha fest that really killed my enthusiasm for the series. I think I'm all set.
Wow, Switch 2 hasn't even been announced and has no release date so far, and you're telling me PS5 is going to outsell it this year? What a prediction, what a story.
Maybe it's a bad omen that the director of Returnal has apparently left the company, but I'm finishing that game right now and it's great. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
If the PS6 doesn't have a built-in disc drive, the chances of me buying it as an early adopter will be very, very low. They've already removed nearly all incentive anyway. The PS6 Pro will be just around the corner after all.
@MasterChiefWiggum It's an advertisement, not a news article. At times, this site (and its sister sites) seem more like a promotional arm of the company than independent journalists.
It's a battle royale (-esque) co-op action game with the aesthetic and gameplay trappings of Elden Ring. I'm not sure how a lore-based explanation for any of this is necessary.
You play in a randomized world every time. It clearly has nothing to do with any existing storyline, and if it did, the one-word answer to your lore questions would apparently be "Multiverse."
FromSoft could have avoided most of these questions if they had called this Nightreign: A Co-op Action Title Which Has No Connection to Previously Established Lore, but unfortunately it doesn't really roll off the tongue, not to mention the obvious benefits to tying this into the Elden Ring brand since they've sold approximately three trillion copies of that game to date.
This will take place in the year 6973 but still be loaded with endless, completely unsubtle political signaling based on the current moment. Can't wait.
The concept has me curious and there's a good chance I'd give it a try, but my gut reaction is similar to most that I've seen so far. This isn't really the gameplay experience I'm looking for from FromSoft.
More than one Miyazaki directed project, and more than one directed by others, eh... I predict a pipeline consisting of Bloodborne 2, Elden Ring 2, Armored Core 7, and some mysterious new IP maybe.
If not a Bloodborne remake project, I guess. I would assume that might be from Bluepoint though, if it even ends up happening.
Revisiting these on Xbox in recent years reduced my enthusiasm for these games a little bit, but I'll never forget how impressive Max Payne was when I first played it on a friend's PC. Interested in playing these one more time with revamped gameplay and a fresh coat of paint.
Of all the unnecessary remasters you could create, I'm gonna be the most susceptible to biting on anything FromSoft related. But c'mon. DS3 is a beautiful game as-is and this is really not needed.
I'm not likely to spend any time on local battles, but it seems bizarre that this mode would be limited to one stage because of "technical limitations."
Still pretty excited about this one though! My wife and I spent the last year or so watching the entire series starting with the original Dragon Ball and I was surprised how much she ended up loving it. That proved to me that Goku is one of the most charming characters ever created. Akira Toriyama was a brilliant talent.
Not sure why anyone should care that review scores were temporarily changed by a troll on Wikipedia, but Push Square loves to get the comment section riled up about culture war stuff whenever the opportunity arises, so here we are I guess.
If there was any censorship/prudish reimagining going on with this remake, I must have missed it. The main female character has a different outfit I think, but the original one was pretty garish, and she still looks normal. If they had redesigned her with a Star Wars Outlaws-style face, I could see there being some complaining...
Wow, very exciting. The original game did a phenomenal job of portraying exactly how terrifying (and unfair) it would feel to have to deal with one of these things. Loved it.
Sounds good! I wish they'd changed even less about the original game, but then again, I played the HD remaster and didn't notice how horrible it apparently was, so I doubt what they're remixing here will bother me after all these years.
Glad there's a spooky game to play during October. Might have to grab this over the weekend instead of waiting for Christmas...
@Oram77 They don't seem to be able to make anything at all that isn't a remake at this point. I'm not sure how anyone would expect them to craft a quality sequel to MGS of all things, one of the greatest series of all time, without the vision of the director who was responsible for the entire series.
I know there are several regular commenters who love the type of thing Ubisoft is doing, even as the wider market rejects it emphatically. If they keep going down this same road much further, though, they're going to fail--and I think their investors are starting to realize that.
It's time to clean house at a lot of these companies and hire some people who are focused on FUN rather than endless, tiresome political signaling.
I wish the original Silent Hill games could be more properly preserved. But I have to say, this does look pretty cool.
It's interesting how with many elements of the original, the technical limitations and related design choices seem to add to the bizarre aesthetic in ways you can't quite put your finger on. But some of those rough edges also make this game a better candidate for "reimagining" than something like Resident Evil 2, which was more conventionally cinematic even in the original release.
I am hoping the changes are thoughtful and limited... If this game sticks the landing though, I hope they'll circle back for a remake of the original Silent Hill, and maybe part 3 as well.
It's "fiercely loyal" and a "beat-for-beat recreation"--but then when it's closer to release day, we'll start getting the leaks specifying all the details that got changed to adhere to current-day political correctness.
@JB_Whiting Why do I care? Because it's based on principle, because this is just one example of a pervasive and bothersome trend, and because I've been around long enough to understand that it's not always your "team" in charge of what gets censored.
Three reasons off the top of my head.
There's also the fact that, like I mentioned before, a specific line of dialogue (if not multiple) has also been censored for reasons that have nothing to do with the removal of the photo mode feature. But everybody keeps focusing on that aspect because it's something easier to make into a mockery.
Look, if people are happy to see certain things get censored, I have no expectation of changing the way that they feel.
With that being said, it takes a truly wild inversion of logic to claim that this isn't censorship, or that people are "over-sensitive" for noticing and commenting on the changes, but not for insisting on changes or applauding them.
@MrPeanutbutterz Here's the dictionary definition of the word for you, with some redundant ones removed, since it actually seems like you're the one who doesn't understand what it means.
censorship /sĕn′sər-shĭp″/
noun
Prevention of disturbing or painful thoughts or feelings from reaching consciousness except in a disguised form.
The use of state or group power to control freedom of expression, such as passing laws to prevent media from being published or propagated.
Deleting parts of publications or correspondence or theatrical performances.
@MrPeanutbutterz I tried to have a good faith discussion with you, but since you clearly can't appreciate the point, I'll let you have the last word. Cheers.
@MrPeanutbutterz I totally respect that everyone has their own perspective and many people could find "objectification of women" distasteful. You have every right to feel that way.
Personally, I've played through this game two full times (minimum) over the years and never purposefully engaged with that feature of the game.
The truth is, though, that many people--men and women alike--would not be offended by this content or consider it a serious affront against women. Others might take it as something tongue-in-cheek and silly, and be amused by it.
Your insistence that it be treated as offensive "garbage" just because that's the way you personally feel is not only censorship, it's indistinguishable from the type of censorship we've seen in the past from the religious right-wing. But I'm guessing if the personal taste of right-wing people was the prevailing influence on culture, you might recognize the problem a little more easily then.
It wasn't just the photo mode that was censored, but I understand why people prefer to put the emphasis on that rather than the notable line of dialogue that was changed. It makes it easier to smear anyone who's anti-censorship as a creep.
@Yousef- If what was removed was so minor, it makes me wonder why they felt so strongly about it that it needed to be removed.
@naruball I'm not sure what else it should be called other than censorship. If The Godfather was re-released in theaters with an "offensive" line of dialogue removed or a nude scene edited out, that's what it would rightfully be called. Maybe what you meant to say is "I'm happy with censorship as long as it reflects my personal values."
"It’s faithful in every possible way"--except for the silly censorship that wasn't deemed necessary even a few short years ago when this was previously re-released.
And before all the other replies start pointing out why people shouldn't care about the censorship, no one's saying these details ruin the entire game. The point is that this constant morality policing and cowardice is getting very old.
If video games are art, they should be treated that way, and not reshaped at the drop of a hat to conform to the current moment's latest progressive values.
It's not just that the price is ridiculous, this is a low-value "upgrade" that's blatantly pointless to own and will be replaced by the PS6 in what seems like a mere moment.
It's an optional GTA6 framerate boost for $700 with no disc drive included.
LMAO--$700 for an upgraded system in a generation that's desperately lacking for noteworthy games, AND you have to buy the disc drive separately. This is a bad joke.
I'll wait for the PS6--and I'm not going to be an early adopter of that, either.
Since this is another game that's attracted a certain type of online controversy and most of these outlets are going to be highly motivated to defend it, I'm guessing it's safe to subtract 2 points from most of these review scores.
In games I've played recently--one that immediately comes to mind is Triangle Strategy--the charmless/repetitive dialogue mostly seemed intended to pad the running time of the game and make it feel "meatier" than it actually was.
Personally, I would have been a lot more impressed if the dialogue had been pithier and less plentiful. If it's all going to be so by-the-numbers, I really don't need to sit through 50 hours of it.
Still interested in giving this game a chance, though.
Cautiously optimistic for the moment since it's allegedly staying 100% loyal to the content from the original... But I'm also expecting to hear at the very last minute about specific details that ended up being censored for "modern" audiences. Happens every time now.
Dark Souls 2 is the weakest (modern) FromSoftware game... Which isn't saying much since the bar is insanely high across the board. It's still very good, maybe just slightly less inspired than the original and DS3.
Rated "mature" but still sanitized for your protection. It would be far too offensive to communists to include that one tongue-in-cheek reference to communism.
Curious what Portal owners think of it, since I received one for my birthday yesterday and am not sure how much use I'd get out of it. How dependent is it on a particularly strong internet connection? Is there noticeable lag? More often than not, I'd prefer playing on the big screen and I need to know whether I should keep this thing or trade it in for a few new games!
This obviously looked terrible, but apparently it's even worse than it seemed from the advertising. Overrated franchise with Reddit-tier humor. It's a "no" from me, dog.
@IamJT Again, mostly agreed--particularly with your very last point. We'd all be better served to stop labelling and accusing one another so much when we could be listening to each other with an open mind instead.
@IamJT I don't really disagree with much of what you said, except that corporate ESG ratings serve as a bit of a thumb on the scale when it comes to what type of messaging is permitted or encouraged.
And you're right that political ideas have always been infused into art, but again, it's the ham-handed and repetitive nature of the messages and character portrayals that I find most objectionable.
