@jedinite I didn't mean for those examples to be in conjunction with each other. I was talking more to what I believe are bad practices in the industry not just within remasters/remakes.
@Icey664 My thoughts exactly! WB hasn't had the greatest handling of any of their media content lately. With a full fledged quidditch game you can bet there won't be quidditch in HL2. I am very fearful this will go the way of EA's handling of Star Wars games (Jedi series aside)
@RBMango I haven't played it yet but it's on my backlog. What didn't you like about it? I've heard excellent things about it from friends but their gripes are over things I think are pretty general in most games. Anything specific, beyond the common failures that have been mentioned in the comments, that made you dislike it?
@Vladspartan I get in arguments all the time with friends and coworkers over this issue. Remasters and remakes only cause stagnation in the industry, along with the awful obsession with microtransactions. If innovation and creativity cannot be fostered in the industry then it's doomed to continue to collapse, as it has been doing recently. The only upside is that the employees that are facing being laid-off or already have been, are taking the risk to come together in smaller teams and make a game they love! I know it's not much of a consolation for them, provided the economic situation, but I do believe it's effect will be seen when there are a variety of new inspiring indie games coming out that will garner investment.
Though I love this game and the original, I do not think it should even be included on the list. Great game that it is, it is only a remake and GOTY should be new games only. I know there are a lot of people out there that don't mind remasters and remakes but it ultimately hurts the industry instead of progressing it. It's still a great game but I think the requisites for GOTY should be stricter.
@PixelDragon we've never lived in a democracy. Politicians and academics started saying that decades ago and it was a lie then as it is now. We live in a constitutional republic (which has its own share of problems). I don't mean to come across as a d*** its just a small pet peeve of mine when people say that. Now back to gaming commentary, couldn't they have picked a studio like Fntastic or a developer like EA?? I'm kidding, wouldn't want anyone to be at the mercy of hack.
That last statement made by one of their chief officers about lay-offs being a "lever" they will use again is saddening. When your livelihood is being threatened by your bosses due to a contract agreement you had no say in and has been poorly handled by said bosses, then you need to have a back-up plan ready. Bungie's C-suite doesn't seem to care about their workers and Sony is handling this professionally and dispassionately, as they should. This was seen from the beginning of the acquisition and it has finally reached its expected outcome. I do agree with a lot of the commenters here that Bungie needs more IPs instead of Destiny for the past 10ish years, and that's on them. WE all need to be aware of what's going on in our industries and jobs and Bungie bosses and employees are no different. Hopefully they pull themselves back up by the bootstraps because I am excited to see what they do with Marathon.
