Horizon Sales Update Cements It As One of Sony's Strongest Franchises

Only two mainline games and some people say its being milked??? lmao they must be jealous, cause this is one of the best franchises period. Can't wait for the next one to complete the trilogy.

I bought Zero Dawn on release. I started it FOUR TIMES, two on PS4 and another two on PS5. I just couldn't finish it. Many reasons: poor melee system, very boring fights with human enemies, primitive stealth, long treks from point A to point B with nothing interesting in between... Still I could live with all that. But the writing - oh my god, it's so bad! Everyone has a lot to say and a very little to actually tell, and the protagonist is insufferable. People say she is even worse in the sequel, I can't imagine it. I have Forbidden West copy that was bundled with my PS5, it's still wrapped.

@Dalamar Honestly, I liked Aloy's characterization in Forbidden West. That was probably one of the better things about the game.

I mean, yeah, she is kinda insufferable. But that's also the point. Her knowledge of lost history and actual 'chosen one' status has made her jaded, disconnected, and self-destructive. Literally all of her friends understand this, and try to help ground her. It isn't until later in the story that she learns to slow down and appreciate her life and connections. And she ends the story a better person for it.

It's literally her character arc, supported by the game's plot and themes. I'm always confused when people complain about her characterization. Like, they understand how stories work, right? You can still dislike her, of course, but it's not bad characterization.

@Dalamar I’m in a similar boat but I don’t think I feel as strongly as it seems you do. It’s just that nothing particularly appealed to me the couple times I tried to get into it. I don’t like the whole ‘caveman vs high technology’ trappings (probably why I don’t care for the Avatar movies either). It’s just blah. It’s quality software, just not my cup of tea.

@RoomWithaMoose I think another thing people forget is that she grew up an outcast and it made her mistrustful around others not to mention forbidden West takes place 6 months after the first game that's no where near enough time to break 2 decades worth of habits but enough to Start.

@Dalamar I actually really liked HZD, but HFW bored me. And I have to agree, Aloy is a terribly written character and quite unlikable—though, to be fair, there’s not a single character in the game I find very likable. The character casting, acting, dialogue, and personalities is one of the biggest weaknesses of the series in my strong opinion.

@Porco Anyone not seeing the favoritism given to this franchise—and the unusual “coincidence” that it’s former studio head has been running PS Studios for many years—is being willfully ignorant IMO.

@AdamNovice wrong on all accounts. I love characters with flaws and dislike boring Jesuses. I always prefer female characters and would have disliked Aloy even more if she was a dude. But considering your avatar you already condemned me no matter what I say.

@RoomWithaMoose If you make the lead character of a story insufferable to a large swath (possibly majority) of the audience, you’ve made some major errors, no matter what the character’s story arc is intended to be. A character can do unlikable things, but they can’t be consistently or inherently unlikable for a story to be successful. At least IMO and for my tastes. It’s unfortunate, bc her character design is really cool and iconic. She has a ton of potential if they can just freakin write her better.

Why mention the "weirdos" at all apart from comment farming?

@Dalamar Like it or not it is the truth the biggest hater are the antiwoke crew. Bad combat? I loved it the game i played the starting area for 30 hours just having fun. They had the best collectables i loved looking for them as they fleshed out the backstory. And one of the best thing you were able to get all items never being locked out of them. For me it was a fantastic game and i played it for 120 hours.

@AdamNovice I think that’s broadly inaccurate and unfair. And it feels like this is a weak argument that’s used in place of giving people the benefit of the doubt and digging into the nuances of their frustrations. The majority of people love well written and acted characters, regardless of gender, or even sexual identity.

Ellie is another example of a badass female character who is also gay. She’s well written, and people love her. The narrative choices about TLoUp2 are a separate issue, but most people love Ellie. Personally, I can’t stand Aloy, but Ellie is one of my favorite characters in any media of all time.

Elena from Uncharted is not a main character, but people pretty universally loved her. Well-written female, badass, non-sexualized character.

Jesse Faden from Control is another example. Badass non-sexualized female character you hear no one complain about or hate.

These are just the examples I can think of.

@CP2 Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3. Her main selling point was that she was just an ordinary teenager and not a big boobed model like all of the other women of the time. She has a flat chest, short hair and freckles.

Beloved character and widely regarded as an excellent game. The idea that if a woman cannot enter the roster of Stellar Blade she will be automatically hated is a hollow argument.

@get2sammyb not sure why it's okay to use the term "weirdos" as a description for people with differing opinions as anybody else would have their comment removed. I've never understood the hate for this series as it's a class series. I own both games although it took a while for it to click with me and I've yet to play through the 2nd game as I have too much on the back burner but I'll get there eventually.

I’ve never seen or heard of these comments or weirdos, this site oddly puts a lot of stock in online social media echo chambers. I imagine they think Bluesky is the general consensus on just about everything out there, not a fringe niche group of.. weirdos. Pot calling the kettle black is strong here. Great game series btw though, recently platinumed the Remaster and picked up the ps5 complete edition for the sequel. Looking forward to checking it out.

They’re a bit on the bland side for my taste but these games are undeniable show pieces for PlayStation hardware. I like Zero Dawn well enough but wasn’t in love with it. Bought Forbidden West anyway it was the game that sold me on the PS5 as a generational leap.

40 million copies ww and plenty of revenues from merchs and side gigs. Guerilla really found their golden goose which is good for them 👏👍

If Guerilla stick with Killzone after Shadow Fall didn't sold that well (iirc only sold 2 million copies), Sony probably already closed their door years ago.

@Dalamar i couldn't disagree more with you. I'm actually enjoying the game (started yesterday again after losing my attention with other games in the past, something that i do often with all games i start playing) and Aloy questioning everyone and everything is what i do in the real world. I'm inquisitive, I'm not that approachable, I'm stubborn as ***** and i think she's not that different from me (though i doubt she's autistic like i am). I'm also enjoying exploring the world and hunting machines. The combat is really good (melee is obviously not the first option here) and the story got me intrigued.

Can’t tell you enough how much I adore Guerilla games. They are utterly tremendous in every single way and Decima is just an animal of an engine. Roll on Horizon 3!! Congrats guerilla

@AdamNovice I think it's also got to do with how much hate female characters with a personality attract in video games. They're supposed to say very little and wear sexy outfits. Anything else is pretty much unacceptable.

Fantastic to see and deserved too as its one of the best game series around. People say it's milked but that's because it's covering different platforms and mediums, there's two games for those that game on PS consoles, one for those that like VR gaming, one for those on mobile, one that's for younger audiences and on a new platform (Switch), those that don't play games much will have it as a Movie as well. I don't see the same people complaining about how many games Pokémon, Zelda and Mario release every decade, or how they are getting movies and TV Shows etc, so it's pretty obvious they have an agenda with this game specifically and seeing it gain so much success must really get to them.

Love both games, Can't wait for the third one. I still need to get the Ps5 upgrade for the original and play it on my PS5, maybe something to do over the Christmas holidays!

@Balaam_ blah is right. It is missing something great art has, that is hard to quantify. But for lack of a better term, it doesn’t have a soul. It is not greater than the sum of its parts. It’s a bunch of generic open world systems put together, and it isn’t bad, or good, it’s just kind of blah.
I think one of the main issues for me was how closely it followed that endless checklist open world design that is pointless and exhausting. And on top of it, there was so much dialogue that didn’t have a point, or fill in lore, or really do anything but waste time. Which is also true of its open world design. So much filler.

I really wanted to love the game but it made me really bored with its repetitive open world design. I think the game would have benefitted greatly by not being open world, but a more guided narrative adventure game.
And it did have a bit of jank, with awkward controls. For me the best thing so far about Horizon was the Horizon Astrobot level.

I skipped all the dialogue and most scenes in forbidden west as the writing and characters do nothing for me. Aloy is quite unlikeable for my tastes.

The games are good overall though and look beautiful. If the melee combat is improved for the next game they’ll be even better.

Zero Dawn is my favourite PlayStation 'exclusive' but I was nowhere near as smitten with Forbidden West. It looked great but everything else just wasn't as good as the first game, in my opinion. Even Aloy became dislikeable, for me.

@themightyant I agree that Guerilla should move onto a new IP after 3, much like I think Sucker Punch should move on from the Ghost series (I love both Horizon and Ghost btw)

I agree with moving on after Horizon 3, but I think SP could (could) have 1 more good ghost story left to tell - I think it helps that they are using a different protagonist each game. Maybe next time they could expand a bit on having the protagonist hunted more.

I hope not. When comes to sci-fi settings, there's plenty of possibility and story to tell. For Horizon case, they can do new protags and new location which i can see the setting got pushed far more into the future or even to other planets and that would open up a completely new story.

Not sure about the mainland - I'm not the biggest fan of larger settlements in games (weird, I know, but I HAVE to explore every bloody house! Lol).

They have the engine, and a lot of the systems - they just need 1 epic story, and a few changes to keep it fresh enough for 1 more game.

You can call me crazy, but I think Horizon still has tremendous potential to explore.

If Guerrilla manages to fix certain aspects of the franchise (improve melee combat, improve traversal in the game (climbing, traversing the interiors of buildings), give the possibility to zoom out a bit from Aloy, etc.), I have no doubt that they will make an extraordinary Horizon 3.

I really don’t understand the dislike of this game. GG did something different when they released this game. I beat both main entries. And they both had me glued in the story. And I liked taking down the massive thunder jaws and slaughterspines. It’s a good series. I just don’t understand all the backlash.
I pretty much enjoyed all the first party IP’s.

I've finished both games on PS5 and on PC, about 3 times each over the years (4 times for ZD iirc), going for different trophies/achievements.
Loved every minute of it.
Haters can go f...find something else to play.

Genuine questions. I would love to hear your idea what kind of "improvement" do you think that Guerilla should do with Horizon melee combat but without breaking the balance or make it feel too easy for players to beat the enemies?

I mean, in Forbidden West, players already has more weapon type from close, mid, to long range to take down human and robot enemies. On top of that there's stealth takedown / Silent Strike, special moves attack / Weapon Techniques and Valor Surges, and dodging or rolling that has i-frame. Are these mechanics also needs improvement or should be removed?

And with these "improvement" for melee combat, how far do you think Guerilla must improved the enemies A.I? I mean, if players got more combat options then the enemies should be more challenging too right?

Got it on PS4 sale and then free with my Ryzen 3600 years ago but it was a disaster on PC at launch. I then bought £10 upgrade version but no matter how I try to play it I can't finish it so I've given up on it

@Dalamar Same as me got it on PS4 for a sale GOTY edition or whatever for like £12 I tried also but couldn't be bothered with it after so long.

Got it free with a PC part and but couldn't play it as it was a disaster if a port, decided to buy the upgrade version and try again early this year. I really can't get into it a bit like The Outer Worlds couldn't get into that either

I only got about 5 hours into the first game and never bothered to play the sequel. It struck me as extremely competently made and obviously very expensive, but with very little soul; what little there was seemed ripped out of a bargain bin Pixar or Dreamworks movie. I don't see myself ever returning to the franchise, but the people clearly know what they want, and I'm glad it makes them happy.

@PuppetMaster My opinion is worth what it's worth… but melee combat is too simplistic for me and not enjoyable. I like shooting arrows/projectiles, but practically always using that type of combat against machines and humans is tiring. I saw some interesting things in the latest Horizon MMO trailer; maybe Guerrilla will take some ideas, get inspiration from Monster Hunter too. Heavier weapons, lighter weapons, daggers, the possibility of using a shield, for example, parrying?… Guerrilla has so many options in this universe!! Obviously, you'll have to adjust the enemy AI. I don't have a concrete answer to your question… but I know the potential for melee combat is great, and I really hope there's a lot of investment in Guerrilla.

Another thing I think Horizon could greatly benefit from in combat is being able to place the camera further away from Aloy.

@Porco The Keyword in your reply is a "decade". Examine the offerings you listed too. This series is not being milked.

#1 a decade is a long dam time and the 3rd mainline game which is the meat/potatoes of this franchise is prob at least 2-3 more yrs away. So call it 13years to complete the trilogy.

#2 one game is a VR offering. VR is so niche. PSVR2 was DOA like the first one. They push a big franchise into VR to try and sell headsets. Hard to add a niche VR title in the milking list.

#3 the mmo and yet to be fully revealed online game,-at least they are much different offerings then the mainline game. But I'll remind you, 13years total until trilogy is complete.

#4 Lego Horizon? lol sure throw it in there. But Lego themed games are niche as well. The Lego theme makes is so far from the main games, that its even more niche then the VR game.

#5 how many COD's, NHL's, Madden's, Assassins creeds etc (you get the point) are released in 10 years time. 10. 10 and they are all mainline games.

@VicerExciser I'm glad a lot of people are noticing this. It's like you're not allowed to dislike any of Sony's first party offerings now. It's also funny that this site frequently equates sales with quality for Sony but, we can all agree the COD is currently in a bad spot despite it always selling very well.

@Reyzore Ah yes parrying. These days every devs add parrying to their games. Doom has parry, RE has parry, even RPG like Expedition 33 also has parry mechanic haha 😁

Parry was started and popularized by fighting games and the mechanic has big risk and big reward. But outside fighting games, i think the mechanic became a lot easier to do but still have big reward. I'm not sure if Guerilla should add parry when Horizon already had rolling / dodging mechanic with full invisibility frame. Two defensive mechanic that can nulify enemies attacks feels like overpowered, unless they toned down or removed rolling / dodging.

But you mention about using shield and that sounds more interesting than parry. Shield is easier to balance like if you block specific attack it could damage the shield or give you less damage than direct attack.

But hey thanks for sharing your idea / opinion. It's nice to see someone explained in more detail what they exactly want developers to do to improves their games 🤝

@CP2 yup, agreed. there is a clear bias and the franchise is quickly nearing oversaturation levels. i think sony needs to take a more balanced approach and diversify its software library with new IPs, reviving dormant IPs, and focusing less on sequels in general. one sequel is fine, but not every franchise needs to be a trilogy, that's for sure. god of war, last of us and the ghost games feel feel like they are in that boat as well (yet another sequel is going to be boring and uneventful unless enough time passes first...10 years or so between entries.). one game per console cycle basically. that allows the devs to keep the games fresh with new concepts and ideas, and generates far more excitement and anticipation leading up to release. meanwhile... in between those 10 year cycles, sony will be releasing new IPs and alternate between the new and old franchises.

It's kind of window dressing in both games to be honest, but especially so in Horizon. At best, you get to choose the tone of your final statement to NPC but all the dialog up to that point and everything about the story plays out the same regardless. In Mass Effect there are at least a few moments with more significant ramifications where you just like shoot a guy instead of talk to him.

In Horizon, I didn't particularly feel like I had any agency over Aloy's character because I chose the slightly more empathetic final response vs the slightly more cold or angry final response to some NPC who I would never talk to again after the end of a quest line.

I just replayed HZD last month and one thing that stuck me this time around is that Aloy can be very sarcastic in a lot of her dialog in that game and sarcasm is almost never an endearing quality...unless you're like Alan Rickman, then you can get away with it, LOL.

Nothing "weird" about criticising it. It deserves it and the developers could actually benefit from listening.

I've completed the first game + DLC, and the second game albeit not its expansion. I've also completed Call of the Mountain.

It's been described many times as "the Avatar of games". Sells very well sure, but it doesn't seem to have generated a passionate fanbase and following. Yes there are fans, but no where close to other IP's, including many that sell less. It's a game I frequently forget exists.

Look at Expedition 33. Compare the instant passion that generated, versus Horizon.

I put that down to the protagonist in particular being a total charisma-vacuum. Very few of the other characters are interesting either, just one or two. The writing is very weak and lets down the tech and combat.

Fantastic tech demo, decent game play, but unlike other games, I don't find myself thinking about it, the stories and characters when I'm driving to work, out for walk, taking a shower or on the sun lounger etc.

I really like HZD (see avatar), both the story and gameplay, but was less warm on the sequel.

Had its moments and in many ways improved on the original, but the new robots were more bullet/arrow sponges and I think there were too many types of arrows (requiring a lot of juggling between bows). Also where they went with the story seemed a bit out of left field.

Still interested in a 3rd game though, but if its only to be released on PS6 that would be a shame.

@Dogbreath You pretty much said everything I was about to say. The Avatar comparison is so commonplace because it is strikingly precise. These two IPs have no cultural relevance at all despite their popularity. Their iterations are good or even great, but lack the depth and weight of much less popular franchises. It sounds illogical at first glance, but it's really not.

I think the series has the universe that's engaging, I don't care for the games as it's not my type of gameplay formula of interest but i respect it more then the other Sony cinematic ones new or existing and converted that's for sure.

The setting/tech and tribal is fair for a lot of things. But even still.

I won't deny it has had enough remasters at this point even if Last of Us got more.

Horizon got what complete edition and play at home offering to then the performance update to the new remaster. Tsushima got it's directors cut and that's it. Last of Us got milked way more then any of these. Days Gone didn't get much but a performance boost I think that's it.

With how much Sony pushes the IP into conversation sure but that's just how much people are sick of that I think or compare it to the Last of Us and think it's the same milking when it's not.

Sony pushes it yet it's clear audiences or critics care more for other IPs, I care less for those and not much about Horizon at all. But I prefer what it does try to do more then the other personality wise or story lore wise. The gameplay to all these IPs bores me to no end like many mission based action adventure games or open worlds, I just find them boring, repetitive and the use of the characters is too safe. I've played better.

Echoes of the end may be linear but it brings back the PS2/PS3 era design I wanted. I buy PS2/PS3 shooters for that reason, Ratchet has just pushed story and the gameplay felt shoved in rather then adding to it, so the multiplayer mobile game dumbing the game down and not using gadgets or anything interesting just shoved it in even further to dumb down the IP.

Others just make accessible games with generic human/animals movesets, and push story/graphics, so playing as human movesets as an animal it's just boring. Animals can't be used for story/visual variety if anthromorphic or as animals like Goose game/Stray it's just boring. You can't tell me animal platformers didn't show great movesets in the past and dumbing it down was a great idea to 'feel like that animal' no it doesn't.

Nothing happens, the world is static and I just don't care for them. Spiderman even with all the movesets of such a character as a superhero did nothing for me due to how it's executed, movesets had no impact on the world just 'combat options' wow how exciting (1 ground pound quest, that's it, barely remember how to use the move after did that side quest too, so memorable and I liked that side quest and the laser grid one, 2 out of the whole game), or the missions/outposts boring me due to how eh they were executed, so safe, multiple waves, not memorable, not enough distinction at all, or compared to Sunset Overdrive's design which was may more engaging of regular or platforming missions/tower defence and more. They are different games yet one did open world design may more exciting for their first open world compared to Spiderman and these others are just so formulaic open world design or basic movesets I can't be bothered to play them.

Fitting the 'themes or context sure' but that's about it. Gameplay wise they are forgettable or not engaging at all. Like elves/dwarves then varied creatures or 'cars are only used for driving' not anything else more exciting to use them for or were too lazy to offer additional rules/event variety, sigh.

The theme/setting doesn't motivate me.

@StitchJones i already took the 2 extra years into consideration when i said 10 years (assuming the 3rd entry will launch in about 2 years time). it's only been 8 years since zero dawn got released. this is a fact-based argument and doesn't leave much room to subjectivity. trying to justify all the releases by comparing it to annualized franchises is very silly

The argument is whether or not Horizon is being milked and that is 100% subjective and impossible to be fact based. The fact I misconstrued the years in between you stated is my mistake and 100% irrelevant anyways, because again, this is subjective.

10 people could think that there's not enough Horizon out there. The other 10 people can think its watered down and milked. Another 10 people could think its milked in the wrong ways, cause they only like mainline games and they would be fine if there was 5 of them by now. Which to you would be "milking", but not to them. Yeah about that. So far i've seen a lot of Expedition 33 fans shows their elitism. They thinks the game is the best thing ever since sliced bread while mocking other games especially FF series. Not sure why those fans acting like that. If the game is really good then they don't need to create drama with other fans or tell other fans that their favorite series is sucks compare to Expedition 33.

Now compare to Horizon fans, i rarely see them acting as obnoxious as Expedition 33 fans. Feels like Horizon fans keep their passion for the series at normal level and just mind their own business. Hopefully Horizon Steel Frontier don't bring new fans who acts like an obnoxious toddler.

You could equally argue that the fact we hear very little from Horizon fans, is because A, they are very small in number and B, they are not particularly passionate about the franchise.

As I say in relation to the "Avatar of Games" tag, I've put plenty of time and money into the franchise, but somehow I don’t sit here feeling particularly passionate about it.

The issue with Horizon and Avatar is that they do big numbers, but the fandoms are small and subdued.

Horizon is the same. It's the bacon butty of games. Millions of bacon butties are sold in the UK every week, yet no one can remember eating them....

@RoomWithaMoose I've yet to play the sequel but what sometimes took me out of the immersion in the OG was that aloy was taking in this reality-shattering, weight-of-the-world knowledge so casually.

That aside, I always thought the desperate last stand of humanity against the machine apocalypse would've made for an exciting spin-off FPS. Especially given Guerrilla's pedigree.

The other games without Aloy is hilarious

Both mainline games are great for me. In many ways they are outstanding. But the story is incredibly weak and sometimes laughable. Lore, on the other hand, is great again. So they have to fix the story, drop the girlboss theme, and we're golden.

If this is Sony's strongest franchise it's no wonder I am ready to leave Playstation behind next gen.

How many things i seen on X with Aloy slathered in make-up with her face trimmed to the perfection. If you dont have double D and look perfect you are a failure to the antiwoke crew. Also the perfect woman for them is a middle east woman no rights or opinions.

I also live in the West and i dont mind it if a woman is not perfect. Nothing to do with a being a white knight its easy to say my own mom shown me how important integrity is and fighting for yourself.

The most beautiful woman does not mean the most interesting one. Anti woke guys cant handle the idea of woman thats not perfect can be a bloody interesting person to talk to or hang with.
