Horizon Sales Update Cements It As One of Sony's Strongest Franchises 1

You can’t mention Guerrilla’s excellent open world RPG franchise Horizon without a bunch of weirdos coming out of the woodwork.

“It’s an industry plant,” they reductively regale. “It’s being milked,” they add.

Well, with only two mainline instalments to date, it turns out the franchise is pretty freakin’ popular overall: a Korean news article attached to the recent reveal of NCSOFT’s MMO adaptation Horizon Steel Frontiers reveals the series has now shifted over 40 million units overall.

Earlier this year, as part of its lawsuit against Tencent copycat Light of Motiram, the firm confirmed sales of the series were in “excess” of 38 million, so it looks like they’ve tipped over the aforementioned milestone in the past few months alone.

This number will include all Horizon-based content, of course, including the two main games and their various remasters, as well as PSVR2 spin-off Horizon Call of the Mountain and the more casual-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures.

But this comfortably puts the property among the pantheon of best-selling PlayStation first-party franchises.

For example, Gran Turismo recently topped 100 million units lifetime, and that’s a franchise that’s been running since the PS1 era. It puts into perspective just how popular Horizon has become given the series is not even a decade old.

Sony clearly has lots more planned for the property, too: there’s a live action movie on the way, as well as a second multiplayer game from developer Guerrilla.

Expect the series’ success to continue to grow.
