The PlayStation 5 rumours just keep on rumbling. This time around, reliable Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier has taken to Twitter in order to share some of his insight into the next generation of consoles. It's just a few bullet points, but they're sure to spark speculation.
First off, Schreier says Microsoft is currently "well behind" Sony in terms of communication regarding the next Xbox. But with almost a whole year to go before these consoles hit the market, that "probably won't matter". Still, it's interesting to hear that Sony is supposedly so far ahead of the competition. Much like it did with the PlayStation 4, it sounds like the Japanese giant is really on top of things, which is encouraging.
Next, "whispers suggest" that, surprise surprise, the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett have "similar specs". We've always imagined that the next-generation will be a bit of a repeat in terms of hardware head-to-heads, with both Sony and Microsoft producing machines that are pretty much on the same level. Rumours that they'll offer the same kind of power don't shock us in the least, but Schreier goes on to note that "both [consoles] sound VERY powerful". Frankly, we can't wait to see what next-gen hardware is capable of.
And last but not least, Sony's strategy with the PS5 involves pushing accessibility -- at least in part. No load times, no waiting around -- you just get into the game as quickly as possible. This last point ties into what we already know about the console, with its custom SSD supposedly allowing for greatly decreased load times, and the apparent ability to download and install different parts of games so that you can prioritise what you want to play. We'll obviously have to wait and see whether all of this is just talk, but it's certainly an intriguing angle.
What do you make of this? Are you starting to feel the hype for next-gen? Prepare yourself for a roller coaster 2020 in the comments section below.

Will frame rate be brilliant ?
so basically nothing that hasn't been reported over the past few months
Hes just rumour confirming what most rumours already reported then.
Edit
He forgot to report that Tom Warren reported xb2 will be bundled with a kinder egg.π
We've known all of this for quite some time
I want more details on what OS improvements they are making. Hardware is going to be close enough to the same.
So... basically PS4 and Xbox One again? Yet another generation thatβll be defined by exclusives but at least I can play those Xbox ones on PC.
@JJ2 A KINDER EGG!!!!!!!
that's it SOLD!
I can't wait for zero loading times. Something I may be more exciting about than more powerful specs.
Ps5 probably going destroy the next Xbox if both Basically identical hardware specs wise.
I think it will matter for MS. If every dev has extensive time with PS5 kit then Scarlett is a port machine
The more tech advances, the less interested I find myself. Specs don't make games more fun, the consoles that contain them just make us more vulnerable. The contrast between innovation in gameplay and relatively advanced specs becomes more apparent as one continues to outpace the other.
Maybe I'll change my tune down the line after the 5 has been through its paces and I see what it offers.
One thought I keep having β this next gen might be the end of loading screen tips.
XBox will have to do something different if it wants to beat PS.
Won't someone please tell me about the 'ole terrafloppage?
Rumor PS6 will also be more powerful than PS5.
@Rudy_Manchego That usually happens after you hit 50. Unfortunately.
@NathanUC nice ESP/LTD arrow V!! Love those!! Wish i could get on as an 8 string
@Gmork___ Thanks! Arrow 1000. I prefer the Alexi 600 model, but this thing rips too
@Number09 - in an interview in the latest issue of opm with remedy, it was suggested that on the new consoles developers might still choose other things over high framerates. so say for example, you now could get something like assassin's creed at 1800p /30fps with 500 NPCs. sure, if you keep the same details on PS5, it could do 4k/60fps.. but it's just as likely some devs will go for 5000 NPCs with more AI, more physics, more gfx details, more everything else, and still target 30fps.
@Rudy_Manchego - what about the gigahertzage?
@leucocyte it seem's player's want better frame rate. in most complaints it's frame rate it's all I hear in 25 year's.
Surly everyone knew it was going to be using processors from AMD and most likely the GPU as well. It's probably going to be a slightly better Ryzen 3 and RX5xxx series GPU from what we have today.
@leucocyte but what id really like to know is how many bits will the ps5 be?!
@BarefootBowser i agree with that to an extent. Just something about knowing that the 3rd party offerings were built from the ground up on a particular system has gotta be a good feeling
No load times? Itβll be like 1996 all over again! (N64)
Also interesting how MS seem to be holding back. I have a feeling they have a surprise in store to get the upper hand on Sony and want to drop it as late as possible so Sony canβt counter in time. They want revenge for the PS4 upstaging xbone I reckon...
Rumour: PS5 will be much more stable than "Gone with the wind" due to more often stability patches.
"No load times, no waiting around β you just get into the game as quickly as possible."
its good to hear all games will come complete on disc and no download patches for 5 hours before we can play.
Most of us here are going to buy a PlayStation because of Sony's track record with game titles. What Xbox has or don't have does not matter. If the new Xbox can show itself as a great console I have no problem picking one up as a second console. Thats something they never did on XBox One.
Microsoft are gonna come at this coming gen full of beans. Gigahertz this, SSD that. Then show us Forza, Minecraft, Halo and Gears of War like we never left 2009.
Next Nintendo are going to rock up with an underpowered electronic calculator with Zelda, Mario and Kirby like we never left 1989.
Thank god for Sony.
nobody has any real news to post lol
@nessisonett considering it's always been this way, with generations being defined by exclusives, it shouldn't be a surprise. However you're incorrect in one facet; MS hasn't made an exclusive since 2015 and won't be anytime soon. If it's available on PC, it's a multiplatform game and with them going 3rd party (not so) quietly, it's no surprise. The only reason Scarlett is coming out is to keep Sony with a rival.
With Halo Infinite launching simultaneously on 3 different platforms, MS has clearly shown they have no interest in actually selling the Scarlett box. They will be repeating the current generation again and that's what they want so they can lock more people into multiple subscription services and finish their transition into a 3rd party publisher.
@Dodoo Yeah they will probably announce something like Kinect 3 lol.
I personally think next gen will be a significant step up. Some of the people at sites like IGN make me cringe when they say it's not gonna be a huge leap next gen, but then go on to say they have no idea what Ray Tracing is.
@Ichiyama Damn - I am nearly at 40 and think I am getting Terrafloppage early...
@swagbag713 I only buy next gen consoles with the most terrafloppage!
@leucocyte Don't you need 1.21 gigahertzage to travel back to the future?
We're talking about Kotaku here. I'll take anything that comes from that site with a pinch of salt. Not exactly accurate or bias free reporting.
Sony promised selective game mode downloading on PS4, but they never delivered, only a few games supported the feature.
@Number09 hopefully it run 60 fps on every games but Sports games could run 90 fps
I'm hoping for some innovation in the gameplay this upcoming generation. 'Resolutiongate' needs to end. So many times jumping up the generations from PS2 to 3 to 4 we've had the same rhetoric from developers. Immersion. Advanced AI, etc, etc. Yet really, games haven't moved on far. A few standout titles have, but the majority have played it safe.
Let's see some gameplay innovations again. Let's see things that are different. Challenging. Hard. Games are too easy these days - built for a casual market. Die & respawn with no consequence. Manic Miner created more adrenaline...
Anyways, here's hoping π€
Let's go Sony β
@billyboyblue666 we do have New Game + modes on some games if that's any consolation.
