What are the best upcoming PS5 RPGs? What are the best upcoming PS4 RPGs? The role-playing genre is an incredibly expansive one, containing so many unique experiences that we think it's fit to detail some of the ones packing the most potential coming to both PS5 and PS4 in the future. There are some turn-based titles in here as well as JRPGs and real-time action games too. In this PS5 guide, we're going to reveal the best upcoming PS5, PS4 RPGs. For more information, be sure to check out: Best PS5 Games.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (PS5)
Disco Elysium caused quite a stir when it released on PC to rave reviews back in 2019. Now, the isometric RPG comes to PS5 and PS4 as part of The Final Cut, containing new quests and full voice acting for every character. This incredibly in-depth experience allows you to create quite literally any type of character as you attempt to solve a murder case. With just a couple of blocks of road to rummage through, this RPG is small-scale but also super deep.
Elden Ring (PS4)
It's From Software's Hidetaka Miyazaki x Game of Thrones' George R.R. Martin. What more do you need to know? The Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice creator is back yet again with a tale that seems to be based heavily in the realm of fantasy, while also being especially difficult. Dragons aplenty, this is a particularly unique project that will probably be unlike anything else before it. Consider us hyped.

Final Fantasy XVI (PS5)
The daddy of the RPG genre, Final Fantasy, is back with its sixteenth mainline entry — marking a return to a more high fantasy setting. We don't know a lot about the game right now, besides the fact that the protagonist is called Clive of all things, but you can still consider us excited. Could it even release in 2021? Let's hope so. Final Fantasy XVI feels like the biggest title for this list — a Game of the Year contender, that's for sure.
Hogwarts Legacy (PS5)
If you're a Harry Potter fan, this is absolutely a dream come true. Hogwarts Legacy takes us back to the Wizarding World as this RPG allows any witch or wizard to put on the Sorting Hat and start earning points for their House. Alongside that will be a brand new story, classes to attend, friendships to make, and enemies to curse. We could lose months of time to this one.
Horizon Forbidden West (PS5)
Guerrilla Games is back with a follow-up to Horizon Zero Dawn that is primed to take full advantage of PS5. Expect new robotic creatures to take down, more weapons to do so with, and an expansive open-world full of vibrant and tropical life. We also expect the developer to dive deeper into the gripping tale of Aloy as well as the environment around her with in-depth side quests and deep characters. This could well be Game of the Year.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4)
Commander Shepherd is back! The Mass Effect Legendary Edition brings the original trilogy of PlayStation 3 titles to PS5 and PS4 with improved visuals and enhancements on the backend. Mass Effect 3 has unfortunately lost its multiplayer capabilities, but everything you could want from the galaxy trotting franchise will be back and better than ever. With all single player DLC included, you've got 100+ hours of content here. Perfect for the quiet summer months — sign us up, BioWare.
Project Awakening (PS4)
Very, very little is known about Project Awakening. From developer Cygames, it's supposed to be an open world title designed for the western market with online co-op elements and a lot of "fighting, blood, and sweat". It apparently takes inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, which gives us hope, so go and check out the game's amazing reveal trailer from a few years back while we wait. It's also definitely coming to PS5.
Tales of Arise (PS4)
Tales of Arise looks set to be a rather major departure from what has earned the JRPG series a lot of merit and fans over the past couple of decades. Its got an all-new breathtaking look that distinguishes it from the likes of Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria, but not a lot is known about the game besides that. We'll get more details next year. A PS5 version is also pretty much set in stone.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon (PS5)
We already know that Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a fantastic turn-based experience after its PS4 launch, but Ichiban Kasuga's adventure through Isezaki Ijincho will look and run better than ever on PS5. Expect 60 frames-per-second and much-improved visuals. What's not to love?

Is babylon fall a rpg also.i think its missing.word up son
Will probably end up getting everything on the first page lol
Top 5 from that list . 1. Elden ring. 2.cyberpunk 2077.3.final fantasy 7 remake.4.persona 5 royal.5.nioh 2.word ☝ up son
Very interested in Yakuza and Elden Ring!
Final Fantasy 7 is top of my list, hands down, but there are other great looking games coming up.
Tails of Arise is the surprise for me though. That game looks really nice and I haven’t played a Tales game since the GameCube.
All about P5R, but I'm definitely also looking forward to Elden Ring/Yakuza/Cyberpunk.
Everything apart from Avengers really!
Cyberpunk is my most anticipated one, but also looking forward to Persona 5 Royal. I could do with getting into Yakuza and Nioh at some point, once I do then I'll undoubtedly want the new ones as well.
FFVIIR will be bought. Cyberpunk 2077 will be bought twice, one for each gen.
Don't forget Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
Is gods and monsters still a thing? That looked pretty cool from the little ive seen.
I'm having a hard time looking past Cyberpunk, although Elden Ring is screaming "look at me, look at me" somewhere in the back of my head. Looking forward to a great swansong for this Gen. With more consoles out there than at any other time the final year is always when the biggest hitters want to drop.
@ellsworth004 I think it's still due in Feb 2020 at the last I heard. Certainly one I'm going to be keeping an eye on
I'm hoping Project Awakening will be a bigger, better action RPG in the style of Dragon's Dogma.
@ellsworth004 Gods & Monsters was recently delayed to at least the end of the year. It's coming to PS5 now.
Obviously Final Fantasy VII and Cyberpunk are at the top of the list, I'm not sure about Persona 5 Royal and it depends on how different ot is
Cyberpunk and Avengers are def on my list! Im intrigued by FF7 even though I've never played a game in the series, whats been shown looks really good!
CyberPunk 2077 defiantly and Marvel Adventures maybe. After that nothing till PS5 unless upgrade to PS5 is included.
I feel "most anticipated" should be the header instead of "best". Aside from that, those appear to be some quality RPG's no doubt.
He looks like cm punk
Nioh 2, Tales of Arise and Yakuza 7. I'm on board.
Elderscoll? Baldurs Gate 3? divinity fallen heroes?
Beyond good evil as well? If marvel avenger is there so should assassin creeds ranagork be there as well. Wasteland 3?!
Forgive me for being the sour grape but even with remakes you can't call anything on this list 'best' until it's been out for some time and garnered the accolades. Tomorrow's dinner will be the 'best' I've ever had despite never having eaten it. All you did was take the upcoming releases list and call the top picks 'best'.
Finally, Witcher 3 is far from deserving of the accolades its received. I'd call it mediocre and unimaginative, mired by sub-par graphics, questionable controls/gameplay, and incredibly stiff/hilarious acting. Whatever game those people played to rate it so highly must be different than what I've played, because quality it is not.
Where's Granblue Fantasy: Relink?
No love for Dying Light 2?
Already preordered FFVIIR and taken the rest of that week off for it, so that’s solidly tops for me, but I’m excited for everything on this list, although I’m definitely not paying the launch price for the SD3 remake.
Only games I'm buying before PS5 launch is Cyberpunk and Avengers, maybe Dragonball. Speaking of isn't that roleplaying ish also.
Already have Ff7, Cyberpunk and Persona on pre-order, and i'll definitely be picking up Yakuza 7 too. Trials of Mana should have been released in the summer. Have a feeling it will get burried in the spring.
Avengers looks awful and is not on my radar at all unfortunately
well FFVII Remake is top of my list but i'm also really looking forward to Dragon Ball Kakarot, it's been 9 years since the DBZ story was done properly in a DBZ game and this time it's a full blown RPG, i can't wait
but i wouldn't classify Avengers as a RPG, it's more of a Action game, a level or loot system a RPG it does not make, it that's all it takes then Overwatch is a RPG or Fortnite or heck even a game like Battlefront II could be considered an RPG if those are the only prerequisites
Dat Elden Ring Tho 🤤
wasteland 3 should be out this year
Gonna get all of those except Tales of Mana......some great gaming ahead !
I don't think nioh and marvel avenger can be considered rpg, action game with rpg yes, but it's not a rpg..
@wiiware In Nioh 2, you create your own character, level them up, unlock new abilities, and even customise them with new loot and gear. How is that not an RPG?
Cygames is really doing us dirty. No updates for "Project Awakening" ever since the teaser and this weekend there were no updates on Granblue ReLink.
FFVIIR and Cyberpunk 2077 are top of the pile for me.
But it's a pretty good year otherwise: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Tales of Arise, Trials of Mana, and Yakuza: Like a
VirginDragon all look pretty good as well.@LiamCroft Rpg is like the witcher 3 or ff7 remaster which prioritize strategy rather than quick reflex, nioh 2 is more souls-like action game with rpg element rather than full rpg I think.
@wiiware All Souls-likes are RPGs.
@Athrum Maybe granblue relink moved to ps5, I mean the game is a rpg with 60 fps and 4 main characters at the same place fighting many enemies and with spells, I think that's a little too hard for old ps4. I hope I'm wrong though since I want to play it as soon as possible rather than waiting for ps5
@LiamCroft Hmm, I think we agree to disagree then, souls-like games is action-rpg games for me
I'm worried about FF7 Remake. People put that game on a pedestal like no other game in the world. If it doesn't live up to that, there might be riots.
Project awakening has to be a ps5 game. That game looked way to good for the ps4 to run it
i played the demos of nioh 2 & final fantasy remake. not impressed...
Just Elden Ring.
We have Persona 5 Royal, the best PS4 RPG.
I hope we hear more about yakuza 7. I feel that corona has delayed it
@neoconair good call. Seems to have gone a bit quiet with information on this game tho what I have seen so far looks wicked. Is it classed as an RPG?
While watching Altered Carbon I would wonder what a game version would look like. Seems Projekt Red thought the same. Cyberpunk looks to be everything I had hoped 👽🔫♥️
I'm still on the fence about Cyberpunk
No Final Fantasy 16? Time to update methinks.
@LiamCroft
Darktide from fatshark
steelrising from the makers of GREEDFALL
@Iroha How on earth did I forget about that one? Added!
I appreciate the work or the author, but the title should be To Be Announced. It would be nice to have some dates to look forward to.
@LiamCroft Thought Horizon Forbidden West was due on PS4 too?
@sanderson72 Yeah it is.
@LiamCroft
After what happened recently, not sure it’s still going on.
They may want to focus only on the PS5.
@Kratos-sensei Why? Miles Morales performed well on PS4. It was probably designed with PS4 in mind and then had its performance boosted for the PS5 version.
Not every developer is shady and unreliable like CDPR.
Add Crimson Desert to the list.
@Ralizah
I know and I have a total faith in Guerrilla (and Sony’s first party in general) but Horizon is one of the main candidates for GOTY and a cross-gen release on PS4/PS5 will weaken performances compared to a release only on PS5.
I am really curious about Hogwart's Legacy
Horizon: Forbidden West, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Tales of Arise are the three I'm most looking forward to. Hoping when Tales is re-introduced there will also be an announcement of a PS5 version.
"Tales of Arise looks set to be a rather major departure from what has earned the JRPG series a lot of merit and fans over the past couple of decades..."
It doesn't look like a major departure at all. Everything they've said so far indicates it'll be very similar to previous games, just with a fresh coat of paint.
@Gamer83 The Japanese anniversary live stream two weeks ago said that Tales of Arise was delayed, and I quote, "to utilize the latest technology and as well as appeal to both series fans and RPG fans who haven't tried Tales...".
I'd say it's safe to assume that means PS5. They waited too long to finally make a real Tales PS4 engine, so they've jumped right over it to build it for PS5 as well.
@Deltath
Thanks for the info.
Horizon Zero Dawn? RPG!? Alrighty then
@2cents Yea open world action game is how I would discribe it
@ellsworth004 It turned into Immortals Fenyx Rising and is very good.
Eldenring holds no hype for me yet i have seen nothing yet. And after another certain game im certain about anything anymore.
@Drake5 had to look back and see what my comment was. Yeah it does look good. I was aware of the name change, i gotta say i like gods and monsters better than the new title.
@ShaiHulud I can't wait for Elden Ring. How are you? What have you been listening to recently? You can reply in The Music Thread if you don't want to do it here.
