It appears that PlayStation 4 is set to receive its next milestone firmware update in the coming weeks. You can now register to take part in a beta test for firmware 6.00.
Currently, you can only sign up with a Japanese or North American PSN account through the respective links. The page for Europe hasn't been refreshed yet, but we're sure this will catch up very soon. Whichever region you're in, you'll have until 27th July to put your name in the hat. A date for when the test itself will start has yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep you up to date as more information surfaces.
Will you be signing up for the firmware 6.00 beta test? What features are you hoping it'll bring to the platform? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Revised folder system, so you can have the same title in more than one folder
I would love to create sub-folders. Example: I have a folder for FPS and be able to further categorize them
I want some speed improvements - things are getting sluggish on my Pro I've noticed. Also, I will be THAT guy in asking for PSN name changes. I'm happy for it to be chargeable like XBOX1 since it's my own stupid fault.
I would love a way to be able to prioritize downloads so after one has finished it will download the next one down the list
@BrettAwesome why??
@JoeBlogs I disagree. I haven't had any stability issues. Maybe try a database rebuild?
I don't think there's anything other than backwards compatibility that would ever particularly want from any future update. It all works pretty much perfectly at the moment, IMO.
well i won't be signing up for it, i don't want to run the risk of damaging my system as i can't afford a new one should that happen but doesn't a number change like this IE: from 5 to 6 mean a big change is coming?
PS1, PSP & Vita emulation would be my wish.
No messing around adding trophies etc.
Just let me play my digital Vita purchase on the big screen, a PSTV emulator if you like, but with added filters, options etc.
PSN name changes.
Also ability to play PS1/Vita titles already purchased via emulator.
Custom theme, i mean:
having a few pictures of your own in rotation,
nad also - background music of your choice.
@Futureshark you know being able to play PS1 discs and Digital PSP games would be great as long as the PSP games were full screen unlike when you connected your PSP to your TV and you can take screenshots, video and broadcast them
i imagine they might also be able to do PS2 games unless they need the "Emotion" engine of course
as for PS3 well without the Cell processor that's impossible and for |Vita that would be nice but not every game would be compatible because of the lack or a rear touch pad
still i highly dount they would add these things so late in the PS4's life, not when we know a PS5 is in the works but they COULD be on the PS5 when it launches
Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support would be great
personally i think we could definitely use some speed improvements on the OS as things are not as fast as they once were.
feature wise, i actually have no idea what we could add next to be honest as its rare i use the ps4 for anything other than playing games and watching Netflix.
will be interesting to see what they add, that's all i can say.
i hope they add psn name change this time
@mrellis1181
Because some games come under more than one category.
god i hate my psn name!
@JoeBlogs you really shouldn't have had to reply to that....
Great OS but ive seen slowdowns when it comes to the TV and Video section when wanting to use Netflix these days
Backwards compatibility, the ability to delete trophies.
I want ps1 and ps2 digital bc, the ability to pin games that I want to play so it stay on the front, and maybe make the dowload/upload tab separate like in the previous firmware, and that's it I guess.
Know what would be a game changer? Media picture in picture. Let me play my monster hunter while watching Netflix or Hulu or something.
@notdead just use Spotify for your background music.
@LaNooch1978 lmao
Those wanting PS3 b/c can forget it... never going to happen. The PS4 just doesn't have the power to emulate the complex Cell and its co-processors in software in real time. Even the most powerful PCs struggle.
Playing PS1 discs... also not going to happen, as the PS4 doesn't play the CD format.
Let me change the background colour of the 'speech bubbles' - as it were - of friends' messages. I find it hard to read the text. Is this just me?
@notdead This. I'd kill for this. The custom music should be an .mp3 upload to your console, too. None of this Spotify nonsense, thanks.
@Gremio108 Nope, you're not alone on that, either.
As for PSN I.D. changes, I know it's probably the most-requested feature since the beginning of time, but I gave it some serious thought the other day. I have quite a generic PSN I.D. and I tried to come up with something I'd want to change it to; maybe my Push Square username (if it isn't already taken, which is likely) or maybe a nod to something else... but nothing held any appeal. Oh, sure, it'd be cool to have a Star Wars name for a bit, but then I'd probably wanna change it back.
As so graphically and vividly pointed out by @LaNooch1978 there are those who need to change their PSN I.D. but for me personally, I'm not that fussed, and actually think it could make things a heck of a lot more confusing in the long run.
If you've registered before do you need to do it again ??? They also need to free up system ram because the original PS4 is getting seriously sluggish
Making the firmware's button remapper RP-compatible would be nice.
@SKC_Diamond the system they have in place right now for it does the job. Just a case of pausing and starting one you want.
I would love the addition of other music players. I use Google play music on every device and do not want to use a second service just for ps4. I k owe it's free but I have already built a few play lists and collection of my music. It would be nice to finally be able to use this feature.
I’m hoping it adds Lei to Tekken 7.
@Rudy_Manchego you might need to defrag the harddrive
@Spectra Dude it's a full version update, it's not going to be just stability lol.
Anyways I signed up for the beta.
i don't want any features.. i just want them to fix annoying bugs that have been happening for what seems forever. eg: "LAN Cable not connected" over and over, even though it is quite obviously connected and netflix etc. continues to play perfectly fine. complete system freezes where the console refuses to respond to anything and the only option is to button it, which usually results in a flashing white light for 10 minutes. the toggle online/appear offline function that seems to randomly stop working every so often.. and if a mate uses my ps4 to play a game, i don't want it to appear on my game/trophy lists, just because my account hasn't been logged out before switching to another. there's so much free s*** appearing on my list that i've never played..
Name change name change name change!
@BrettAwesome Thats What I want too from The beginning!
@David187, defrag the hard drive as in rebuilding the database? For me that works but the fix is very short as the laggy operation returns some after my next use. After the second use it is just about the same as before the data base rebuild.
This lag is the same with my 500B 1215A unit from xmas 2015 and my 1TB 7115B PRO from xmas 2017. The lag on my base PS4 seems to have started with a spring or summer 2016 update and got worse with each new update until April 2018 when i began using my PRO. Less lag at first the PRO soon began to lag like my old regular model. The difference is the data rebuild with my PRO is about 3 minutes like with my 120GB original slim PS3 from 2009. My regular PS4 always took about an hour to rebuild.
Why the lag and what is the fix? I don't know. Does Sony know?
Here is what i know and suspect. I suspect it is a problem with cache memory. Database rebuild also clears the cache like just turning the console off does. The system them operates fast until the cache fills again. I suspect.
What i do know is that my PS4 works fast until i visit the PSN store and have javascript enabled while web browsing. Checking PSN status and the online manual requires javascript enabled. When only web browing with javascript off i do not get lag. However with javascript enabled, and depending on site and or length of time, the lag can be from slight to extreme when backing out of the browser to the home screen and attempting to use apps, check trophies, visit the capture gallery, starting a game, ect. My fix is a turn off and restart of my PS4 where when with the extreme lag the power down time is much longer than normal. After the restart the lag is gone.
Maybe having a way to clear the cache before exiting the browser would help. Maybe it is some issue between javascript and the Sony operating system and or broweser.
I only enable javascript for a few sites and then not all of my visits if using my PS4. The more the site lags with javascript on then the more lag i get with my PS4. Lots of sites do perform very well using the PS4 browser with javascript off. So for me the lag fix is leaving javascript off.
This may be long winded but i keep reading about the lag fix defraging/rebuilding the database is suppose to provide. My experiences with a fat and slim PS3, and regular and Pro PS4's is that any fix provided is very temporary and that a restart is about as usefull as a defrag of the hdd.
So yes, i hope the next update fixes the lag that seems to me to be caused by javascript issues and or operating system software issues, and much less likely caused by an hdd needing defraged.
@daveofduncan I have really bad internet like 1gb an hour at night it cuts out for about 3 mins but that time is enough for when the PS4 is in restmode it will pause the download and then when the net comes back it will download the first one on the list instead of the one you want to download
It's simply another firmware update.
Six is just a number.
We will have to wait and see whether the significance of the changes themselves in this iteration mark out the sixth update as having more of an impact and greater significance on the machines performance and functionality, and our experience of any new features and improved gameplay.
for some reason Japan sign up isnt working (mainly because the page is from July 2017). North America sign is however.
@nathanSF every X.00 and X.50 update are one of PS4's biggest with the most features, every update between normally has nothing special. with the hit of changing ID back during PSX last year and it being 6.00, its highly likely we will get ID Changes... anything else can also be in it, just need to wait and find out.
I NEED...er erm nothing more I am sure there is 1 or 2 things I would like but can't think of anything really.
All 3 sign-ups are not working right now.
Europe: Page still isn't updated.
North America: You get the Snaaaaaaaake error
Japan:
PS4® System Software Beta Application

As mentioned up above, likely due to it not being updated as the 2017 page.
If the NA Beta sign up was live, it may be that it was in error, or they just took sign-ups down until they can get an official blog post about it up.
@Paranoimia Actually, the laser for CDs is there (it says so in the safety manual), the only thing missing is the software, which they can add in a firmware update.
@GigaGaia That is not correct. The PS4 has a BR lens, not the PS1 optical laser lens. That is why it cannot play CDs.
It is compatible with DVD/BR format only. What is possible is PS2 playback, with patches and such for each specific game. But thus far, they've not done that.
The most they could possibly do in theory with PS1 discs would be a simple check that it's legitimate, and then offer some sort of digital/stream equivalent, but it cannot read the disc in the normal sense.
@GigaGaia Technically it's in there as it has a red laser for DVD playback, and the only difference is wavelength. Could be a few reasons as to why it won't play CDs though. Could be just that they don't want it to, sure; could be that they don't want to pay licensing fees on every unit sold for a feature they feel few would use; could be that the laser isn't dual-focus and can't play CDs.
The fact that the manual lists CD doesn't necessarily mean anything. Some of it is just 'boilerplate'; sometimes manuals are created in advance of hardware and late revisions aren't reflected, since the cost of re-writing the manual isn't worth it.
Yes, please let me change my name. I was young enough whe I got the PS3 that dad help me set up the account. He thought I could change the username so he wouldn’t let me choose.... hahaha. I couldn’t. It’s legit the only one that’s not Jaz007 which drives me nuts. Having access to the PS1 games on PSN would be a nice feature too. Speaking of which, they need to release more PS2 games on PSN. There are some I really want on there.
@Dr4gonkiller96
Interesting. Do you think that perhaps Sony withholds significant or major changes until there is a X.00 or X.50 version?
If so it's an interesting phenomenon that smacks of superstition
After all numbers are meaningless beyond their original representation.
They could drop in the changes as and when.
I guess they want to encourage a ritualised relationship with the users, giving symbolic meaning to arbitrary numbers.
Wonder why no article has updated their posts on this saying that none of the links are currently working.
All I want is true trophy deletion, ability to move trophies from an old PSN account to current PSN account, and to have my true full download speed.
@Futureshark @SegaBlueSky Backwards Compatibility would be nice, but it'd have to be PS1/PS2/PSP...PS3 is too complex for it to ever happen.
@SKC_Diamond +1 this idea, PS4 is like a PC so this should be possible.
@Rudy_Manchego Speed improvements would be very much appreciated...and I have a PS4 Slim XD.
Updated US link, since the old one hasn't worked since late Thursday night.

@mrellis1181
Because I have a folder for indie games, but I'd like a separate folder for walking sims as well, and I have a folder for downloaded AAA games, but I'd like folders for different genres too 🙂
so what does 6.00 do then? any leaks with keynotes or is it more stability? 💪
To see download speed whey I download updates, games etc.
After the damp squib that was v5.00, I'm not expecting anything earth shattering. As has been mentioned, backwards compatibility emulators would be nice but I can't see it happening even though it'd be a fairly straightforward port of any PC emulator..
NoCode23 I have all 3 models no lag hope you find a solution for the problem
