After failing to make any kind meaningful impact in the latest UK charts, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has crashed and burned in Japan, where it barely sold over 8000 copies on PlayStation 4. Historically, the series has never produced a huge hit in the Land of the Rising Sun, but these are still disastrous numbers for the crossover fighter.
Sony's console, meanwhile, once again found itself settling for around 25,000 units. It's a shame that this week's biggest story comes in the form of a total flop, but there's really not much else worth mentioning.

Just such a shame that this will probably mean the end of a great franchise. MvC3 was good though and at least that's available on PS4. Still wish they'd just do an HD version of MvC2, mind.
Didn't Capcom expect MvC:I to sell 2m copies? Its FW number is less than half of a port of a remake of a 20-year-old game (USF2) on a platform with a much larger user base.
From what I've gathered, the game isn't really bad...
Good. Hopefully a true marvel fighting game will succeed this mess. Enough with that crossover bull, I want a real marvel fighting game with a marvel-only roster.
Shame :/
Frankly, this is embarrassing.
A great flop deserves a good laugh. Makes for interesting news. Most of the staff will be sacked anyway at the end of their contracts.
Even Agents of blooming Mayhem sold better than this in the UK.
That's too bad, the gameplay is spot on, but everything else about it is kinda... meh. I still say the launch roster could have been so much better. Firebrand, really Capcom? And whatever Disney and Fox got going on with X-Men is really annoying.
@JoeBlogs The hardcore fighting game community seem quite pleased with the actual gameplay - I'm sure we'll see it do well at big tournaments like Evo next year. But going by early sales, it's never going to find an audience beyond the hardcore.
Cant say I feel sorry for them. Wake up call for Capcom.
The art is so ugly, capcom should looks guilty gear or dbz on ps4 to see 3D anime graphics done right.
I did not even know it was out many other good fighting games out there already
What I played of it seemed really good...but I was never that into the VS fighters, too frenetic. It's sad to see the Pokken DX re-release do so much better tbh.
Capcom really botched this, but at least there are 8 other PS4 games on the list, and all of them except PC2 have already sold better than MvC:I.
(Including Yakuza with its original non budget price edition.)
They deserve it. Marvel, Capcom and Disney deserve this slap in the face.
Two years ago I said if NX would be able to run PS4 ports that PS4 (and the PlayStation brand by extension) would be a goner in Japan. It looks like my prediction is turning out to be true. Nintendo hasn't solved their stock problems, or even gotten a real Monster Hunter or Pokemon game on the thing yet. I'd say things are looking awfully grim for PS5 in Japan.
Saw it coming after I played the demo .. I was a huge fan of the second entry on the dreamcast and had some great fun with the 3rd on my PS3 - really sad but it seems Cancom has finally made it clear that their good old beat em up days are long in the past
