Leaks presumably irritate every organisation operating in the games industry, but Sony must have been particularly peeved by the PlayStation 4 Slim's premature reveal. Today we learned an important lesson about the diminutive device: it's not very photogenic. Like, at all. To the degree where we gave up trying to shoot our own photos and opted to use the glamour shots provided by the platform holder.

Why are we making this confession? Well, look, no one on the Push Square payroll is a professional photographer, but we've taken decent shots of new hardware before. The reality is that the PS4 Slim just looks bad whatever angle you photograph it from – no wonder the reaction was overwhelmingly negative when the first batch of images appeared online.

But it's not an ugly console when examined by the eye. Don't get us wrong, there's nothing spectacular about this system in the slightest – but we kind of like that about it. It's probably the most understated hardware design that PlayStation's ever produced – even including the first revision of the PlayStation 3, which itself was pretty plain.

Like, there's really nothing that catches the eye about this new console. aside from a glossy logo on its surface and feet which resemble the PlayStation buttons. But there's definite beauty in its very obvious simplicity – it's small, and its size and shape give it the appearance of a nice coffee-table book rather than a console. It's suave, almost like it knows it's good and it doesn't feel the need to shout about it.

But it absolutely, unquestionably isn't photogenic in the slightest. We've embedded an unboxing above – like you haven't seen one of those already! – and we'll try to put up a review when we've spent a little more time with the unit. Early impressions, though: it's a smaller PS4. Well, what were you expecting?
