Topic: Why is my ps4 not taking discs ?

I have a ps4 second gen.

Recently I began to get the message disc dirty /unable to read disc. I decided to take it apart to see if I could see anything obvious but apart from the ribbon cable to the disc drive looking burnt out, I am wondering if a burned out looking ribbon cable to the motherboard could cause this problem ? apart from that everything looked fine, so I put it all back together.
I used a cotton bud with some household surface cleaner and wiper the laser lens while it was apart

after I put it all together this problem begins, It now won't let me insert any disc into the ps4, it's like the ps4 is switched off when you go to insert the disc it just doesn't it, it just hits the plastic. whereas before taking it apart the discs were going in/out perfectly. I only took it apart to see if I could see any reasons for error code.

any ideas please ?

thanks

Ouch. I don't think you should have taken it apart as you have now invalidated your warranty and I'm not sure Sony will accept it for repair.

Sounds like it was broke and you broke it more unfortunately. Of course if the ribbon cable looked damaged it could have been getting power to the drive still but you accidentally finished it off. Perhaps you can buy a new ribbon cable or a whole new drive/cable depending how it comes. But I think the help you need in general is beyond what you'll find here, perhaps some YouTube videos will better guide you but if in doubt take it to a professional. It does sound salvageable.

@KratosMD to be fair I think it's better to have a go with that kind of stuff and make mistakes. The key is to make sure you got the right tools and take your time really. I've broke tons of stuff pulling it apart not being patient enough lol. But then I've fixed a lot of stuff too so I'm quite confident having a go.

It's all just lego in the end!

It sounds like the drive isnt in the housing correctly. The disc has always gone a tiny bit in before registering. If you cant get that far take it apart again and marry up the plastic slot and the drive.

I know what you're saying but I would like to learn and watched a lot of educational videos before opening it up

It's slotting in okay, could a ribbon cable to motherboard and disc drive if burnt out cause the error disc code?

It was taking discs perfect and ejecting them.gine until I took the disc drive out but I didn't take anything apart on the disc drive itself

I'm.judt wondering why it was taking discs perfect before taking it apart but not now?

Rightboy91

@Rightboy91 well that ribbon data drive will send all kinds of info. You said it looked burnt, so that could well be why it couldn't read the disc and it gave a default dirty laser message. Then perhaps you've damaged it further so it can't accept or eject discs. Or maybe you didn't plug it all back in together properly.

But if you do want to try fixing it clearly an important first step is to replace an obviously burnt cable.

I have to agree with everyone here it sounds like you broke something else when you took it apart which unless you are 100% sure of what your are doing is very stupid cause it voids your warranty. Obviously now since you opened it up there's really only a few options for you

1) Contact Sony and set up a repair of course they do not have to reapir it since you took it apart yourself so keep that in mind. Also if they do repair they more then likely will charge you for it along with shipping both to them and back to you which will be expensive

2) Buy a new PS4

3) Look for a local computer repair shop. A few in my town do offer console repairs such for video game consoles again they will charge you for the repair but it will probably be cheaper then sending it to Sony.

Unfortunately all those options will cost you money so it's a case of which one will be the cheapest but then again you have learned a lesson today.

I'm all for experimenting and trying to repair stuff yourself. But I would never do it on something so expensive. I built a PC a few years ago and learnt by taking my old dead one apart so I knew roughly where all the bits went. Even after watching a bunch of vids there was still quit a bit of trial and error involved. Slightly different with a PS4 as they are all pretty much made the same. Like others have said it sounds like you messed up somewhere when you put it back together.

@Rightboy91 @KratosMD I did manage to transfer a disc belt from a newer broken PSOne "faulty disc-drive laser" to my older broken one "broken disc belt" which fixed the old one. Fast-forward three years and it still works great. I REALLY don't recommend trying to fix newer hardware especially hardware that is still under warranty, the new stuff is too advanced for us casual tech geeks to fix. Even if you have a general understanding of how the console works and what goes where you can easily break something if you don't have the right tools or know-how to handle that specific hardware.

@MadAussieBloke yeah lets go digital and give up all control over what we buy, no refunds, no trade in, no reselling, losing the ability to redownload once the publisher takes it down (see P.T) and inflated prices

Physical over Digital any day

on topic sounds like the loading arm isn't working, i would recommend taking it to a proper specialist to get it fixed

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"

"Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I'm easy come easy go. I love my games but there's more to worry about than a bunch of plastic on my shelf. Digital certainly has its perks. I haven't played Mario Odyssey in months because I can't be bothered to get out of bed and find the cart and then have to put Zelda back in when i want to play that. If I had Mario ready to go on the memory card I'd still be hunting those moons. You know - actually playing the game and enjoying it instead of leaving it on the shelf.

@kyleforrester87 Ya lazy so and so!
I know what you mean though if I'm chillin on the sofa and I dunno what to play I would probs go for a downloaded game. But if I'm fully into a game I would let that stop me from playing it.
I can see both sides of digital v physical and have plenty of both. I have about 80 credit in CEX and have done since trading in my 360, so if fancy a game I usually get it from there. Usually only get digital if there is a really good offer. I never replay games so that aspect wouldn't really effect me.

@JohnnyShoulder a few games, which I would consider my absolute favourites, I would prefer to have physical copies for prosperity. But really when I think about it they are are few and far between. It's highly unlikely I'll play through like 95% of my physical collection again if I'm being honest with myself.

Do you make much money off collecting physical games?
