@Ash_uk1: Awesome. I was quite lucky the first time I witnessed one as I was in power armour so I could just enjoy the sights and sounds.

@Churchy: Wow. I witnessed mine on the very first day - right when I met Dogmeat. It was a little scary seeing my rad count keep moving because that red rocket didn't have much shelter. I was constantly getting 5's.

Well I got it last weekend, played it for 8-9 hours but its just not for me I was buying it on a bit of a whim as I was never crazy about Skyrim, but while I at least found that world interesting to be in, Fallout is just terribly drab. I guess that's what happens after a nuclear war haha. There are other things I don't like about it but in the end it's lots of little things adding up that put me off. I'll trade it in tomorrow - but at least I gave it a go!

@kyleforrester87: That's fair Kyle. If it's not for you, it's not for you. Still you gave it a try man! It's funny as I've never been that into Elder Scrolls as I'm not too into traditional western fantasy, but somehow Fallout works better for me. I'm enjoying 4 even with it's technical problems. It's a bit like an Aston Martin held together by duct tape.

Really surprised this thread has gone quiet for so long, thought everyone on the site was playing this!
Got the game for Christmas, played a few hours here and there, made it to Lexington and I've done a good few quests. This being my first Fallout, I like it a lot and can see why people were excited for it but it does feel a bit overhyped. It does create a great sense of exploration I have to say, down to the minimalist style mini map which simply shows icons I think. And so far the quests have been interesting enough, although I'm already getting a bit fed up with Garveys settlement quests

Yeah, input in about 250 hours but I've been on a break from it for the past few weeks

A reason for loving this game? I was just wandering around when I met a Deathclaw. No, there were two of them! And what? Alpha Deathclaw! And one of them was a Legendary one! I ran into a shack, thinking of shooting them safely through the door frame. Then, the legendary one stepped in! Holy shoot! When I finally killed him, I felt like the game could end there, with such an epic fight. But it was just a random encounter during a walk with my dog in Survival mode.

This game is amazing.... Everytime I tell myself "now get that quest and finish it" I end up doing something completely different and equally (if not more) engaging....

I've just started fallout 4 tonight and the beginning is rubbish compared to f3 or new Vegas. The graphics also look like they were pulled from half life 2, The menus are also slow and really annoying to use.

Don't get me wrong its a Bethesda open world game so its moreish and highly playable, but the 'Improvements' like crafting bases and the leveling perks don't feel good at all. Also after using d-dog in another open world game, dogmeat is frankly useless.

Not great so far.

@themcnoisy: I much prefer the human companions. Some of the stuff they come out with is excellent. The amount of times I've been ridiculed for picking up every piece of junk... I agree to an extent with the graphics and the menus. The menus I kind of reasoned away as being part of the aesthetic. The clunkiness adds to that retro feel of futuristic although not necessarily fit for purpose. Keep with it!

@Shellcore: Will do, and yes a good point of view. Like using the Nokia 2210 to access the internet haha.

@themcnoisy: Maybe I'm too in love with this game, but after +150 hours my only complain is that sooner or later it's gonna end. What difficult did you choose? I'm on Survival since the beginning and I don't know if playing it at normal one can just run and shoot ignoring how fun is to craft weapons and armors... Hope you'll enjoy the game!

I am at around 125 hours. I enjoy the exploration and some of the side quests (won't ruin my favourites for you). I do have a couple of nit-picks. The first is that the branching storylines basically end with one of two outcomes. Both of which are essentially the same. Luckily I saved before going too far so I could see all of them without restarting.

The second is more to do with the trophy hunter in me. I hate collecting the bobbleheads! I scour each location and literally mark them off on a notepad so I know they have been stripped of everything. As I felt I had nearly exhausted the game (with only 6 bobbleheads) I resorted to a guide to pick up the rest. The locations of a few of them were places I had already "cleared". Without the guides, I'd have been wandering forever trying to find them. Now, I have used it however, I feel I have cheated on the game as if the guide was a seductive mistress. It's cheapened the experience for me. Understand that's more to do with my state of mind and how I get enjoyment from games. However, in the age of the Internet, what's the point in hidden items?! Give me trials or something more skill-based to do! Good example would be the archery range in Ocarina of Time.

@andreoni79: I would play on Survival if it kept the eating/sleeping mechanics from NV. As it stands, however, it just turns enemies into bullet sponges. Not my idea of fun. Totally understand how it makes weapon mods all the more important.

@Shellcore:

  • "However, in the age of the Internet, what's the point in hidden items?!" Finding them, maybe? They give you an extra bonus and being an extra, you are not constrained to find them. You are constraining yourself to get a trophy which doesn't mean anything while blaming the game design...
  • Eating and sleeping would make sense only if they disable fast-travel; however, playing on Survival I always cook and bring some food with me since many recipes can be very useful on that difficulty level.
  • Enemy as bullet sponges? I remember reviewers complaing about how they finished the game wearing the same clothes and using the same weapon since the very beginning. Obviously they played it on Normal... On Survival, I can only one-shot raiders and mutants with my modded sniper rifle and kill a Behemoth with 3 or 4 shots of modded shotgun, and I rarely die thanks to my modded gears!

@themcnoisy: Dogmeat loves to chew enemies legs and arms, giving you the time to shoot at their heads. You'll thank him for that once you'll get attacked by more than five enemies at once.

@kyleforrester87: What is Dogmeat thinking?

@andreoni79:
"Finding them, maybe? They give you an extra bonus and being an extra, you are not constrained to find them. You are constraining yourself to get a trophy which doesn't mean anything while blaming the game design". You see my predicament. I admit that this issue is more to do with my perception of completion. However, whilst I won't go as far to say this is a flaw in the game's design (I actually love this game), I feel bobbleheads could be better implemented as an extra reward system. Maybe as quest rewards or for achieving something spectacular in game.

"Eating and sleeping would make sense only if they disable fast-travel; however, playing on Survival I always cook and bring some food with me since many recipes can be very useful on that difficulty level". I would be quite happy to have an option to disable fast travel in a survival mode. I just feel Fallout 4's use of the term for what is just a higher difficulty level is a bit disappointing. I'm glad you find a use for cooking on it.

"On Survival, I can only one-shot raiders and mutants with my modded sniper rifle and kill a Behemoth with 3 or 4 shots of modded shotgun, and I rarely die thanks to my modded gears!" I enjoy the mods also! Doesn't take long to mod weapons if you go with that idea from the start. Did you play the Survival mode on NV? If so, how do you think they compare, and what do you prefer?

@kyleforrester87: Haha, there's something not right with the graphics. After playing MGS, Rocket League, one piece and resogun - playing fallout 4 is well behind. Its just not smooth.

@andreoni79: I'm on Normal, I've already died twice.... Go me. Don't worry though bro I will be playing tonight as it does have that exploration and the vats which are both cool.

@Shellcore: The last 15-25% of any 'collectibles' should flash up towards the end of the game. Especially if the main storyline is complete. Your spot on - for unchartered 1 it literally took all the fun away, I was more concerned with some rubbish collectible than what was going on with the game. I'm an ex xbot - only got my ps4 16 months ago and promised myself I wouldn't trophy hunt.... That went well :/
