So many people forgetting this is standard practice in every industry. Sell a product with multiple tiers of quality. It's a choice. Such nonsense to call it predatory. Grow up.
"itโs a little odd how this commercial exists to illustrate why you should buy the console, but instead goes on to promote the dozens of optional peripherals you can purchase alongside it instead."
Peripherals is where the real money is, that's why consoles used to be loss- leaders at best.
Maps the size of postage stamps nearly makes omnimove redundant. And the Skill-based matchmaking makes playing the game frustrating when you're starting off. The first 10 hours are a chore. Other than that it's ok so far, but if the reviewer thinks its a game someone could play exclusively for a year, I'm glad I'm not that person. This game could be played every day, up to the point it annoys you, and it will, and you need to play something else.
Without knowing any of the facts beyond this threadbare article on the situation, it's impossible to take a stance either way. It's quite disturbing to see one particular comment here so full of vitriol for views and people they don't agree with, about a situation they know so little about.
It's a beta, why so harsh about it? It's entirely the point of it existing ๐ they literally warn you that this is not finished code and it's still in development. You don't even know what version of code this is.
@Northern_munkey it's a fair concern and certainly one I'd understand over what's been said elsewhere.
Seeing devs upgrade thier existing games eases my mind on that, and if its something that doesn't happen at launch but is patched later is still acceptable to me as the majority of games are not optimal at launch anyway so I tend to wait until I buy.
@atthegates I understand you're worrying about that. However, that worry is not based on any substantive proof other than an opinion. It didn't happen in previous generations where there was a mid-gen refresh. So I think you'll be fine. PS5 will always be the platform where game development begins. If anyone should be worried (and I'm not) is Pro owners who may be anxious that the game won't receive extra attention, that costs time and money, to improve it just for a niche audience.
So seeing them doing it for old games is reassuring even if it not going to benefit me personally.
@atthegates says who? I'm buying the Pro and it's not because I can play old games with better visuals. I'm buying one for future benefits, just like I do with all my consoles.
I don't buy consoles because it benefits old games, so I'm delighted that devs are upgrading these games but I'll probably never see it for myself.
@WiiWareWave really? And how exactly do you 'milk' a gamer out of ยฃ700? That's not a microtransaction. That's a significant amount that people of average income would have to think about before spending it. It's the kind of price that an enthusiast would consider, not a casual gamer.
The market is full of devices of one particular model with various versions of the device at different price points aimed at different audiences, and yet if console makers do it, they're milking people as if it's not a choice. Nonsense. All perspective lost. If you want to moan about 'milking', complain about subscriptions to go online, the death of second-hand games, digital prices being kept artificially high. A niche console for a select audience is a choice, and beneficial because the base model has become cheaper in tandem.
@atthegates that's the glass half empty approach from someone who's not getting a Pro. I am, so my glass half full view is that it's great that devs are taking the time and the money to improve a game, sometimes a game that's been out for months and seen its sales tail off, just for a small subset of gamers that will benefit.
The cartoony/Uncanny Valley faces in Dragon Age is really off-putting so changing it for ME is a good idea. And please ensure Shepard can still can punch people for saying stupid stuff.
@themightyant thanks mate. It's easy to think Sony's problems are worse than they seem if you're willing to take as gospel the complaints on the internet are a reflection of the vast majority of gamers' mentality, and the focus by the media on using reddit and X as a source of sensationalist news.
@McTwist the PS5 has sold in huge numbers despite a pandemic and chip shortages. They've r&d'd a sequel to a niche platform and released PSVR2. They've acquired studios. They've released some of the most popular games this gen. They've battered MS, their closest rival, so badly MS are having to released thier exclusives on Playstation. They've expanded thier relationship with PC to include even more exclusives. They're releasing an elite version of PS5 for hardcore enthusiasts. They development for PS6 is well underway and we could be only 3 years away from that.
Sony are far from going downhill. They've made mistakes, some really big ones that annoyed a vocal minority, but don't mistake that for a steady decline since PS4.
@McTwist if this is Sony going 'downhill' enough to worry about its future, I'm going to have to refer to a dictionary to understand what's changed about the word.
Bought the game, the levelling up is very enjoyable. Even if I only play it for a couple of hundred hours rather than MMO lengths of time it's value for money.
The reason is that adding a disk drive would push the price of the console too high for some of the enthusiasts to stomach. ยฃ700 is the absolute limit for a standalone console.
Also, the console being modular is a better design option than not.
What the heck is Scott playing that he has to redact the name?! ๐ There's only one Redacted so the other one must be very controversial!! Is it Hogwarts?
@Bramble yes. It's good. I enjoyed the gameplay, and if the grind has been improved then I'd recommend it to a newcomer. Watch some videos. It's a time sink so unless you're willing to spend at least 100-200 hours, don't bother. It's never ending
@alex8329 Hmmm.. do I go back? I've sunk 500 hours already and then got fed up with all the back and forth of nerfs. Is it worth the investment of more time?
@naruball The word "whom" is used as the object of a verb or preposition, but in this case, the data miners are the subject of the clause ("it took less than 48 hours for data miners to rip near-complete"). The correct word to use is "who", as they are the ones performing the action. Happy to be shown to be wrong naruball. That's my understanding.
Disney lost the copyright for the rubber hose version of Mickey Mouse, as seen in Steamboat Willie, which is why we're seeing this game and the dev feels safe enough to not worry about a cease and desist.

@Buckster i was using it as an example of Sony investing in the industry with risky, niche products. A company going downhill doesn't do that.
