@DennisReynolds judging by the PS3, I wouldn’t be surprised if in 20 years time we still have functioning PS4/5 discs and a shut down PS Store. As said here, I would not take anything for granted from Sony right now
At this rate Playstation should really be looking also to phase out consoles, single player games, maybe they should pivot into a live-service publisher. Soon there will be no significant differentiators from any of the other companies and i believe they could make more money making their own PC launcher, if that’s all they care. I really agree that it’s still too soon to gauge the impacts of this and maybe when they make themselves visible, then it might be too late. Trust is really hard to earn back. As we,ve seen with Xbox, it’s really easy to boil yourself until there’s no coming back.
I dont get why people seem so compelled to try and make the others “get over it”. Doesn’t affect them one bit. If you prefer digital, nobody is forcing you to anything, might as well carry on doing your thing, unless you for some reason personally has something to gain from it, i dont know why you would care. Let people voice their dissatisfaction how they want. It seems even within the community people want to keep infighting, its not if as keeping discs will make devs publish fewer digital copies. Many dont release physical already and thats fair. Others see value because each community is different. The thing is after this no one will be able to choose.
I have plenty of physical AND digital games and have always preferred physical because for me there was always enjoyment in the other aspects besides playing. Even though the portion of physical buyers is diminishing i believe the purpose of providing this option is, or rather should, not only about be about costs or the “majority”. Even if only 10% or so of the games are bought physically, its still a LOT of games, a lot of people and many things that orbit around it. What will really happen though is that this will alienate a lot of customers, the reality is that these physical sales are not guaranteed to translate into digital sales. I know that a lot of folks, me included, used to buy more physical games than we could play at a time because the thought process behind it is different and involves other stuff. I dont think makes any sense to “bet” if people will or not stop playing games, or giving up on Playstation. Its not a question of bluffing, people enjoy gaming in different ways, maybe they will really not stop, but this may forever change their shopping habits. For a company that seems to lately be overly focusing on the short term, i think that they may not like or even bear this, and i also think that they are really also betting that people will just carry on buying whatever they buy as usual. I think this is shortsighted and may alleviate somewhat but wont solve any of the problems they are facing now, rather i think this only hurt customers (even those that only buy digital and wrongfully think they are immune or insulated of anything that happens in the physical gaming space. Im really not sure how I will respond to this, because this involves changing drastically how I used to buy games, what i know is that im not really stopping playing games any time soon. But Sony, and only them for this matter, is forcing me to reevaluate my shopping habits. I have no incentives now to buy any games on release and may as a result buy fewer, or only when heavily discounted. Or worse, at least for Sony, this may make me look more closely to other platforms and consoles. If they offer me better deals (and by that i mean not only monetarily speaking) i may take may business somewhere else.
