Re: PS5 Had Sony's Best Year in Japan for Almost 20 Years

TimeDelayedGamer

@Mikey856 It's a crying shame there's not room for the more experimental stuff as well, but I understand the business reasons. One thing I will say though is that Sony seems pretty supportive of indie developers, a lot of whom are willing to take risks on unique ideas, which mitigates things a bit on Sony's part.

Having wrapped up my first playthrough of Ghost of Tsushima (What. A. Game.), I am currently being mesmerised by Tunic. So far loving every second of it. The sense of discovery is fantastic and the atmosphere, visuals and music are all really hitting the spot. Only downside is the loading (I'm playing on PS4) which seems ridiculously slow after how fast GoT is, lol.

Re: PS5 Had Sony's Best Year in Japan for Almost 20 Years

@MrGawain Completely agree. Sony were always willing to push the envelope with innovation and variety in their games in the past, and they seem to have lost a lot of that now since Japan Studio etc closed. I realise a lot of these games didn't sell so well, and business is business, but that willingness to try out ideas and give things a go gave Sony a certain cachet that they just don't have any more.

@Kyushutrail I always make a year end tier list as well 😂 I haven't decided on the final order yet, but GoT is up there. Also played Psychonauts 2, Dead Space, and The Talos Principle this year, and they're all in contention.

That's the original Dead Space on PS3, by the way - my username was chosen for a reason 😁

Finally got round to playing Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut. Just completed Iki Island, so now back to the main story! I could wax lyrical for hours about what a fantastic game it is... Great story, and I love the use of nature to guide you towards goals, events and collectables. The visuals are frequently taking my breath away, and Jin Sakai is a great lead character. Happy gaming everyone.

Ys Origin (playing through Toal's campaign on normal difficulty because hard was kicking my butt 🙄). Once I'm done with Origin's retro goodness, I will finally be giving Ghost of Tsushima a spin - been looking forwards to that one for a while!

Also playing Gravity Rush 2 (one of my fave games ever) with my daughter - she's currently in awe of the scale of Jirga Para Lhao.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 502

I'm in the mood for something a bit retro, so have been playing Ys Origin. For some reason, I've never got round to playing through Toal's campaign, so going to do that after I've refreshed my mind on Yunica and Hugo's stories.

I'm also still trying to finish my last unsolved puzzle in The Talos Principle Road to Gehenna ('Small Space Big Solution' ). It's an absolute bugger and I am completely stuck, which is frustrating as I've solved absolutely everything else in TP1 including all the star puzzles. Determined not to look up the answer, however!

Re: Who Is PlayStation's New CEO, Hiroki Totoki?

TimeDelayedGamer

I hope they ultimately find the right replacement. Sony seems to have lost their way in recent years: increasingly disconnected from the player base, less willing to take risks on a variety of games, closing Japan Studio (that one still hurts) etc. They seem to have become pretty complacent. Really hope that the replacement is someone who understands and loves games and wants to push forwards the medium, as well as follow the PS exclusive 'winning formula'.

Playing Resident Evil Remake this weekend. It's the time of year when I'm in the mood for that sort of stuff. Can't get over how much it feels like the original while improving on almost every single aspect. Thank goodness you can play without tank controls now, don't have the patience for that nonsense any more 😁

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 433

I've gone retro and am having a whale of a time playing GTA Vice City on my trusty PS2. It's years since I played GTA 3 and Liberty City Stories, don't ask me why it's taken me so long to get round to Vice City. I'd forgotten just how much fun the driving is in those games. After a few hours of exploring, I've started using a 100% guide as I sadly don't have the time to try and discover everything by myself.

Re: Poll: Do You Care About PlayStation TV Shows?

TimeDelayedGamer

If a show is genuinely good and captures the spirit of the game, then I'll likely watch. That's where a lot of videogame adaptations fail, in my opinion: they're usually so far from the atmosphere and essence of the game that they might as well not have bothered.

Having said that, if they invest the earnings from these shows into more great original IPs, then that will be a win for gamers even if the shows miss the mark, providing they're commercially successful.

Re: Kojima Productions Not Being Bought by Sony, Says Hideo Kojima

TimeDelayedGamer

Is that, "Kojima Productions will remain an independent studio" in the same way as "the sole protagonist of MGS2 will be Solid Snake"? 😂

Seriously though, I don't feel there's any great surprise here. Kojima must be loving his creative freedom after his time at Konami. Hopefully Kojima Productions and Sony will maintain a close and healthy relationship.

Re: Best The Simpsons Games

TimeDelayedGamer

Hit & Run was the first game I ever played on my brand new, shiny (literally) silver PS2. I had a whale of a time with it - driving around sandbox Springfield was just so much fun, and I seem to remember the story was much better than I expected. Great soundtrack as well.

Re: Disco Elysium's Big Update Out Now on PS5, PS4, Massively Improves Load Times and More

TimeDelayedGamer

On my first playthrough at the moment, day 2. Not sure what to make of it at the moment. The world-building and story are fascinating, but I don't feel like I'm actually making much difference to what's going on, apart from making a few dialogue tree choices. Just feel like I'm along for the ride rather than really shaping the journey. I wish they'd stick in the odd puzzle with the items you accumulate or something.

Anyhow, I'm going to stick with it and see if it starts to gel with me more. Better loading times (I'm playing on PS4) are definitely helping!

@TJ81 I think that's good advice to play something more immediate side by side with it. Might do that, though I normally hate playing more than one game at a time as one of them always ends up falling by the wayside.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 411

Finally finished my epic Dark Souls 2 SotFS playthrough. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it became a bit of a slog towards the end - screw you, Frigid Outskirts.

Have now started Disco Elysium, which I'm finding absolutely fascinating. It's really reminding me of the Magnetic Scrolls text adventure games I played as a teenager (any other old codgers remember them?!). Really looking forward to delving deeper into the story. I didn't even roll my eyes at the opening amnesia plotline, simply because when it comes to videogames, amnesia is actually a very effective and immersive plot device.

Re: Cult PS4 Sequel Gravity Rush 2 Celebrates Its Fifth Birthday Today

TimeDelayedGamer

Gravity Rush 1 and 2 are two of my all-time favourite games. There's just so much imagination, charm and fun in there, and a real touch of magic - and the soundtracks are simply superb. Kat and Dusty are great, endearing characters - one of my favourite ever videogame duos. I always felt the gameplay was a little misunderstood by reviewers - I feel it's exactly as chaotic and 'imprecise' as the developers were aiming for, but once you get the hang of Kat's powers, it's brilliant, thrilling fun. A Gravity Rush 3 would be as a big a wish for a threequel as Half-Life 3, for me personally.
