Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

The_Wailing_Doom

I don't think $700 is the right price without a disc drive because that makes the real price around $780. That is definitely too much. A price increase is one thing, but a price increase AND shrinkflation is where I draw the line.

On the other hand, things cost what they cost. If I want the best console gaming experience, and I do, I need to fork out $700 or not have the best console gaming experience. It's a choice we all have to make.

I think $700 is a fair price given the world economic realities that prevent the PS5 from being reduced in price. $200 over the base PS5 makes sense, but the lack of a disc drive, even though I don't use it, is itself an unacceptable price increase, however.

The separate drive is a genius move on Sony's part from a manufacturing and business point of view, but it is not as consumer-friendly as it appears.

I like(d) Paul Tassi's Destiny content, but that's about it. He does seem to be overly defensive of Xbox and quite short-sighted at times which puts me off. As another commenter pointed out, he reminds me of Destin Legerie from IGN. I used to listen to Podcast Unlocked (IGN's Xbox podcast) every week for many years, but stopped when Destin was championing Microsoft buying up everything they can and running Sony out of business. That was just too stupid for me.

@Titntin
You certainly speak the truth, but I like having a disc drive just so I can play anything I want and I'm not limited to digital media. I've been buying only digital games for over a decade on console and almost two decades on PC, but I still like to have a disc drive.

I mean, they could just charge you more and include the disc drive. Maybe they will do that in addition to a model without, but I suspect they will release consoles for less money without a disc drive since they sell the drive separately. Giving folks the choice and an upgrade path seems more pro-consumer than you are saying.

@nomither6
Indeed. I rarely pre-order games and typically only do so when I want a statue or something in limited supply (Spider-Man 2 and Space Marine 2). There have been five exceptions over the past decade:

Final Fantasy Rebirth because it came with the previous game, which I didn't own yet.

God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök because I absolutely adore the God of War series and it is what got me into PlayStation in the first place.

C&C Remastered because the first game was so very impactful for me. It was the first RTS I ever played and I managed to buy it on accident. It started my love for RTS games.

Astro Bot because I know the game is going to be great and I wanted to send a message!
