Seems to me the problem was not with the game itself but with advertising standards. Bill should have gone after advertisers that push bad faith messages rather than games - but that wouldn't have been as easy a target.
I'm a big fan of GRRM's work, but I hate the difficulty in Souls games so I won't ever buy Elden Ring. I know if I did I'd get frustrated and never finish it.
Miyazaki says he wants "as many players as possible to experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship." Mate, I have that in real life. When I sit down to play a video game, I don't need more of that. A difficulty option would be nice.
I liked the first game but didn't love it. I finished it, thought it was good, but three things marred it for me.
1) The bad facial animations when characters talked.
2) Poor parkour
3) The story, while decent, was pretty obvious in terms of where it was going
The first game was probably a 7 out of 10 for me. Could easily have been an 8 or a 9 but those rough edges spoiled the experience for me.
Forbidden West however has fixed most of those issues.
Character interactions are much more animated and interesting. The story, while again fairly obvious in terms of where it was going, did have a few surprises for me and I enjoyed it overall.
The main issue I had with the seuqle was the parkour and world navigation. It's MUCH better than the original game but still not quite perfect. Sometimes you'd follow a marker to get to your objective but suddenly it'd shift and you'd have to backtrack. And climbing, while better, still had a few instances where Aloy would not go where I wanted her to without a fight or sometimes she'd go in the complete opposite direction of where I told her to go.
The other small gripe was the graphical glitches such as pop in. This happened infrequently enough to not be an issue, but when it did happen it was noticeable and jarring.
But on the plus sides, the combat feels smoother and more varied. And my word - the visuals are just amazing. Many times in this game I would just have to stop and look around and admire the virtual world GG had created.
When I finished it (yesterday), I felt the urge to keep playing to mop up the side quests and errands. I may even try to platinum the game. I rarely try to do that with open world games so it's a sign I enjoyed it.
So overall the sequel is a solid 9 in my books. Could have been a 10 but just a few small rough edges took the shine off, in my view.
@Quintumply In the cons, I see you note "janky faces." Unless I missed it, I don't see mention of that in the review body. Can I get some more info on this?
I enjoyed the first game but found it had many little annoyances - wooden facial expressions while characters talked being one of them. This wasn't really a problem for Aloy but mostly affected NPCs you talked to. I had hoped they'd fix it for the sequel but I guess not.
Another minor annoyance was the plot which, for the most part, was obvious right from the start. Glad to hear that the narrative is stronger this time around.
Another minor annoyance was the platforming which, based on this review, doesnt seem to be fixed. It was never a deal breaker but was one of the thousand cuts that lessened the experience in my eyes.
I was forced to update and now I can’t load my friends list or start a party with friends. Puts a dampener on playing Destiny with mates tonight, that’s for sure.
I’m not the only one. Others have started saying the same over on the PlayStation subreddit. I’d advise caution about upgrading if you use party chat a lot as I do.
I think I played and finished Call of Duty: WW2 back in the day, and the fact that I can't remember that for sure speaks a lot towards how much the CoD games blend into one another and how memorable they are.
Yeah, I bought it on the strength of reviews from websites like this one and IGN. I'm about five hours in (Ann has just joined up with us).
Whilst I understand that this is a 100 hour or so experience so 5 hours is basically nothing, I'm starting to question why this game is so great. In the past in-game week I basically sat there with auto-scroll on while I watched my character and his mate have various conversation. Finally the time came to go into the Castle and yet more reading occurred with the occasional fight that was over in less than a minute. Basically, it feels more like I'm reading a book and less like I'm playing a game and frankly, if I wanted to read a book, I could do that without my PS4.
I'm gonna give it another few nights to see where this goes. I'm no stranger to JRPGs so I know that sometimes they need a little while to get going. Hopefully that happens soon though because honestly, so far, I'm feeling a lot of buyers remorse.
People wanted it with Vita. It was the Vitas main selling point, after all. I bought one ant launch on the promise of console gaming on the go so I remember how the dream faded quite well.
Kilzone was a launch title that was good but not great. Many of us turned our eyes fairly quickly to the Call of Duty franchise. But COD,: Black Ops Declassi was awful. A quick look at. Metacritic will tell you how bad that game turned out to be.
“No matter” we thought. “Soon Resistance: Burning Skies will be our and THAT will be the promise fulfilled.” But again, we got a terrible game which no no one wanted to play.
Outside of FPS, The Vita’s Uncharted title was underwhelming compared to the PS3 games. It was good but lacked the spark of the home console titles.
So people wanted it on Vita but the system didn’t deliver. The Switch, so far, has. Mario Kart 8 is every bit as good, if not better, than the Wii U version and MARIO Odyssey and Zelda are perfect. Doom has made many sacrifices to run on a Switch but reportedly it still looks fantastic.
If Vita had delivered better games from established home console franchises I think it would have done better than it did. But after the so-so Millzobe and Uncharted titles and the massive twin disappointments of CID and Resistance, there was sadly no recovery.
Do they have a patch that fixes the naff facial animation during dialogue cutscenes. I liked the game but oddly the facial animations were so poorly done it really lessened the overall experience, in my eyes.
@NaughtyOttsel22 I'd say it's fair to say Uncharted was "heavily inspired" by Tomb Raider, taking its premise and heavily improving on it with cinematic moments and some QTE.
I like how everyone says the new Tomb Raider was an Uncharted clone, when Uncharted was basically a clone of the original Tomb Raider series.
Anyway, I'm hoping that you're right Sammy, and that the exclusivity window is shattered soon. I'm looking forward to a 2015 that features BOTH a Drake and a Croft on PS4.
I just tried it. Unless I've missed something, looks like you're tied into using the Vita's rear touch pad to control your character. Terrible idea. Why bother porting something from a touch only device to a touch+physical buttons device if you're not going to offer the choice of front touch, buttons AND the rear touch pad? Oh? So you can lazily chase the lucrative gold mine that is in-app purchases? Right. Gotchya.

Re: Yes, Lara Croft Will Likely Still Climb onto PS4 in Rise of the Tomb Raider
@Storytime7 It probably shouldn't be a surprise that a Playstation focused site leans heavily towards the interests of PlayStation gamers.
And FWIW, I'd give up SFV exclusivity to have Tomb Raider on PS4 without a moments hesitation. The two games are worlds apart.
