@BeenGamingSince_83 well we do know it’s confirmed to have sold 5 million units. It reached 19 million players but that could be due to a bunch of different factors. Regardless the official trophy list shows less than half the people who played it finished it. So while the first was a financial success it didn’t resonate with everyone who played it. The jury is out on whether the sequel will be able to bring copy the success of the first.
@UltimateOtaku91 I’m well aware, I did some research after and found out that’s what he meant. I also did a bit more research to see if the game truly was as popular and here’s something I found. On the games trophy list, it says that around 42% of players finished chapter 14, the final chapter of the game. Meaning that less than half of the player base actually bothered to finish it. Not complete it, finish it. For reference, God of War Ragnaroks trophy for finishing it has a completion rate of 70%, which is more in line with what I expect.
That’s not good. Now that only accounts for the PS version. Steam might be a different story I’m not sure, but I can’t imagine the percentage is all that different. For the record I don’t care if people are excited for this. If they are, good I hope it lives up to their hype. All I’m saying is I don’t think the wider gaming audience is as receptive to it as you think. And I think Kojima knows this, hence the obvious nostalgia bait with legally distinct Solid Snake.
@dskatter I never said no one else liked it. I said people either loved it or hated it. The game has its fans, I don’t dispute that, but i don’t think it has many fans outside of Kojimas established fanbase. Metal Gear had a wide appeal Death Stranding doesn’t because Death Stranding is a very weird, very different kind of game. IIRC even Kojima’s team weren’t fully convinced of the project when they were making it, that’s how different the game is.
@PegasusActual93 yeah, about that, I don’t believe that number for a second. Check it, in March of 2022 the games sales were around 5 million units. Impressive yes but still 5 million overall. And yet in 2024 the game was said to have sold 19 million units. So in only 2 years it sold an extra 14 million units? Even factoring in the PC port that’s a little ridiculous. Especially for a game that hasn’t had a large cultural footprint. If the game is that popular then where are the memes for it. Metal Gear Rising didn’t sell nearly that well and look how many memes spawned.
Obviously memes aren’t an indicator for success, but my point is I haven’t really seen people talk about the game much since its release. I have to press x to doubt on that 19 million. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen, but for a game whose critical reception was very mixed, I don’t see how it was possible. For the record I haven’t played the game, wasn’t too interested in it, I’m just going by what I was able to gather online. People seemed to love or hate it, so that’s why I called it divisive.
At this point I think the only people interested in this are hardcore Kojima fans. The first Death Stranding was divisive and didn’t seem to appeal to people outside of his core fanbase. Maybe the sequel is better but I don’t know how interested people will be in jumping into this a second time.
@Ultimapunch it’s not really the exclusives people are buying the PS5 for at this point. If you look at the games that are actually selling on the system it’s mostly multi platform titles and more specifically sports titles like FIFA. Tbh the people buying consoles are casual gamers who go to PS5 because they had a PS4 last generation and it’s an eco system they’re familiar with. Many of the hardcore crowd are switching to PC.
The game awards, like the Oscars, Emmy’s, Grammy’s and every other awards show in existence, is just a way for the industry to pat itself on the back. Why would the average gamer care about them. If you enjoyed the game that’s all that matters. Who cares if it won an award. If it wasn’t for the ads I don’t think anyone would care about it.
The question is if they can keep the momentum up, and considering the word on the ground is mixed at best it may drop off faster than you think. It feels like everyone is calling this a success prematurely just to spite a certain group of people.
This is why I don’t consider myself a tech fan. Because the price of the products are getting too much yet people still keep buying them. When is it going to get too much if $700 isn’t?
They never learn do they. But in all seriousness why even do this? people hate having to sign up for things they don’t want, and it’s not like the people who sign up are going to engage much with what Sony do so it serves no marketing purpose. So just don’t do it.
At this point I just don’t see the point in consoles. You can get a decently powerful gaming pc at this price and it plays most thing on consoles anyway. You might as well just bite the bullet and get a gaming pc.
I have to ask, why bother with making a PS5 Pro? It made sense to do a Pro model for the PS4 because that was an underpowered system when it came out; something that was done by design to cut costs after the PS3 blew up in their faces.
The PS5 is supposed to be decently powerful already, and people still haven’t gotten everything they can out of it. So why doe a Pro model need to exist?
@somnambulance for a game as revered as Silent Hill 2 that’s not a good thing. It worked well enough for Alone in the Dark because, despite its importance, it was seen largely as an old clunky game that hadn’t aged well. Silent Hill 2 is a far more beloved title that deserves more care.
I hope they stick the landing with this, but I have concerns that the game may have so much variety that it becomes a cluttered mess, or that many of its ideas don’t get fleshed out. 80 levels is a lot to try and make interesting.
@Undeadcop no not really. But based on what I know Silent Hill isn’t a combat focused game. It has combat, but it’s meant to be clunky and something you try to avoid.
The added emphasis on combat is already a misstep. Silent Hill was never about the combat, it was always about the puzzles and the story. The main characters are meant to be every men with no combat experience, that’s why the combat was so clunky. Seeing James make leg shots like Leo from RE4 just seems wrong.
That’s a lot of levels to try and make interesting. Wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those are shorter mini game style levels to inflate the number. Mario Wonder did something similar with the badge levels.
I find the disparity between the comments on this site and literally everywhere else fascinating. I love how everyone here is saying “just suck it up, you had to do it for all these other companies, why you complaining now.” Completely ignoring that they did complain about that, and that forcing players to sign up for a service they don’t want despite their being no reason to do so, is a trashy practice that shouldn’t be defended. Has the system broken you this badly?
Oh, that’s not good. Though I think this should be a sign that maybe open world games have lost their lustre. Seriously there’s way too many these days.
@ShogunRok you may be right. Having that kind of discrepancy is actually fairly common for PlayStation. The consoles sell well into the hundreds of millions but the best selling games usually only crack the 10 million range, maybe more depending on how big a game it is. So yeah maybe it’s not wise to correlate the lower sales to a lower install base, there are probably more factors at play here.
I mean fewer people own ps5’s compared to PS4’s so it makes sense it wouldn’t sell as well, but that’s not a good sign considering the budget for this was probably way higher. It’s going to need to sell way more copies than Remake to make a profit.
I don’t know why they didn’t to begin with. If you’re going to release the game on pc the same day as the console version then it’s not really an exclusive at that point. Console exclusives are already becoming less and less important as the console tech is virtually identical between machines these days, so really what’s the point.
I think I finally figured out why I never liked these. It isn’t the games, it’s the format. It’s just a trailer playlist with nothing to sell the games. It’s boring to watch and since they upload the trailers straight to YouTube after anyway, what’s the point in watching this.
