What's this guy actually arguing for? I'd love to hear him spell it out instead of just calling it AI slop and calling it a day. What exactly is this "soul" he's referring to?
@OneWingedShadow hey thanks for the response! So, what is "success" when playing solo? Do you have to extract like the other teams? That's what I don't understand.
Your comments about solo play really leaves a lot to be desired. Do you get the full experience? There's fun, then there's "this is a lot more fun with pals" (surprised you didn't say that tbh, I literally ctrl-f'd for "pals" because that's where this felt like it was going).
It feels like the discourse around this game is less about whether or not it's good or bad, and more about whether or not it's the next big thing to tether yourself to for the foreseeable future. Capital G Gamers are always looking for the next big thing to play night and day, and after all the hype surrounding this one, there's a lot of personal feelings erupting because the Marathon fans don't want anyone to piss all over their latest fix. Criticizing the game right now is going to be taken very personally by the people who have had a lot of hope riding on it.
I don't think it's hate for the sake of hate. I think it's getting hate because Bungie was led by a guy who invited an employee over to his house to look at his multi-million dollar vintage car collection then fired him (and many others) the next day. Bungie has become hard to root for.
@Dissident I finally got him lol - and the summons definitely helped. There is just so little room for error in that fight, but I think I also had to really slow down and think about what I was doing and how the game works, so all in all it was a good experience. Definitely needed to get all of my Dark Souls thinking out of my head, and once I did that it started to click more. Anyway so glad I did because the open world is so fun, can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the game.
Old age has finally caught up with me. I tried to get through the tutorial boss of Nioh 3 for 3 or so hours last night and just couldn't do it. Got close a few times but have to accept my Souls skills are just too slow now. Shame because I love the feel of the combat but that boss is just a twitchy skill check. I guess the game is more forgiving once you get past this skill check but I just couldn't crack that nut.
"Red Light Raid's problem is that it's little more than a curio, bolted onto the experience in an attempt to add some kind of value. Unless you're a Yakuza diehard, you'll probably play it once or twice and then never touch it again."
Why do game journalists always write from the point of view that the only market for games like this are dudes who played the game 20 years ago? New generations of gamers are born every single day, many of whom will be stoked to play who don't carry the "but I played this 15 years ago" baggage.
You said it here:
"Let's start with the objectively good stuff: Director's Cut enjoys a noticeable boost in resolution, the load times have been improved, and there's now an English dub for the sickos that want such a thing.
We'd also argue that the title's brand new multiplayer mode, Red Light Raid, is a decent addition. While far from essential, the mission-based distraction offers up some daft fun if you're into 0's combat system, letting you play as 60 different characters from across the main game."
It might just be that you aren't the only target market for this game.
"In one ear, Outer the other" - that really sums up my feeling of the first game tbh, but I still had fun and actually finished it which says a lot these days. A little burned out on Borderlands 4 so this could be a good palatte cleanser
NGL this sounds exactly like the kind of game I'd get into lol. I'm someone who cares very, very little about stories in my games and in general expect them all to universally suck, so I tune them out regardless. Gamers losing their minds over their precious stories is getting out of hand. If you want a great story, read the work of a real author.
Not trying to troll or anything, it's just interesting to me that the game world has decided that programmers should have the writing chops of someone with an MFA in creative writing all of a sudden. Writing good stories is very, very hard. I can only imagine doing that AND wrapping a video game around it and dealing with all the egos that go along with development/production.
How interesting can you make "outer space mech game" anyway? I think most mech gamers are here to geek out with mechs. Space stuff happens. End.

Hell hath no fury like a gamer scorned by a video game's story. It's really wild lol.
