After teasing the game's existence yesterday, Square Enix has officially revealed Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy via the above trailer.

A backlash was already brewing ahead of this first look, but now that the game's out in the open, the publisher's getting slated across social media and in comments sections.

Just in case you're totally out of the loop, Duellum (god, Square Enix really loves these dumb names) is a mobile-only title with what seems to be a focus on gacha — that is, the randomised (and monetised) unlocking of characters and, seemingly, abilities.

What's more, Duellum doesn't appear to be an action-fighting game like its predecessors, instead opting for command-based bouts against both rival teams and cannon-fodder monsters.

But it isn't just Duellum's mobile exclusivity and much-changed gameplay that's earning it negative feedback — it's also the fact that Square Enix has a long track record of scrapping its free-to-play Final Fantasy projects.

Backlash Begins as New Dissidia Final Fantasy Game Is Revealed for Mobile 2

In the last year alone, it's shut down the woeful Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, and confirmed the demise of the much more popular Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius. The latter's actually getting the axe at the end of this month.

Still, the overriding sentiment from Dissidia fans is that there should be a new instalment on consoles — but that's clearly something that the company's unwilling to invest in at this time.

After all, its last attempt at such a title was Dissidia Final Fantasy NT — a game that was critically panned, and struggled to justify ongoing support due to a lack of sales.

Honestly though, we'd be fine with a remaster of Dissidia: Final Fantasy or Dissidia 012 — two PSP favourites. Come on Square Enix — we know you love remasters!
