PS5's Share of Active US Players Is Slowly Beginning to Pummel Xbox 1

While those of you who live in Europe and Asia will know Xbox has been little more than a footnote for quite some time, USA has remained somewhat of a battleground for Sony.

We know from Circana data that PS5 tends to sell the most units on a monthly basis, but it’s still been somewhat competitive, with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch battling it out for second spot most months.

But new estimates from Ampere show that PlayStation is gradually beginning to take real authority over the Xbox in Microsoft’s domestic market. As of the end of 2022, PlayStation had an estimated 6 million more active players than the Xbox; that difference had almost doubled to an estimated 10 million by the end of 2024.

While this data accounts for PS4 and Xbox One as well as current-gen consoles, it suggests that customers are beginning to abandon Microsoft’s ecosystem in favour of Sony’s.

Obviously, we’d need each ecosystem’s concrete active player numbers to know whether this is a case of PS5 growing or Xbox Series X|S sliding, but we suspect it’s probably a bit of both.

Of course, all of this becomes even more interesting when you consider Microsoft recently increased the price of its consoles, with the Limited Edition 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black currently costing more than a PS5 Pro.

It’s entirely possible Sony will follow in the footsteps of its rival due to economic conditions, but it if it doesn’t, expect PlayStation’s advantage over Xbox to continue to grow.
