@LN78 I've seen it twice and both times I didn't know what to make of it. It is almost like it is two different films, or a film within a film. There are some genuinely laugh out loud moments though. Wierdly, when they both get high I found it a bit cringe first time, but the second time I was belly laughing at it.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer. This is strange one, and hard to describe what genre it falls under. It starts off as a drama with a weird unsettling tone, but then twists into something else. I found it fascinating to watch but I'm not sure if I enjoyed it, a similar feeling I had when I watched Joker. The cast all do a good job, which includes Sunny Suljic who plays Atreus in the last two God of War games.

Watched Spinal Tap for about the millionth time. Such a great movie and endlessly quotable.

Just finished watching Man of Steel on HBO Max. Absolutely phenomenal movie, definitely one of the coolest superhero movies I've ever watched. The scale of the battles were very impressive, as were the visual effects. Henry Cavill as Superman is such a perfect fit (and it's too bad that he won't be reprising that character anymore).

Can't believe that I wasn't planning on watching this movie until I read about the DC Extended Universe and which order to watch the movies. Just like with MCU, I felt like release order was the best way and starting with Man of Steel has given me an excellent introduction to this universe. Genuinely cannot wait to watch the other movies!

Movies I watched this weekend.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Disney+)

One of the better MCU efforts from 2022.

It's perhaps a bit too long and some of the night scenes are way too dark (I think this is more of a Disney+ problem than one of the film itself as I've had the problem in some of their series, though the scene where Namor first snuck up on Shuri & her mother was so dark it was almost like just watching a bunch of disembodied voices, lol), however the tributes to T'challa (and Chadwick Boseman himself) were well done & emotional (I was almost tearing up by the after credits scene), and when it got around to it the action was fun (Namor in particular was pretty badass).

Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1984 (Blu-Ray)

Original Japanese version.

80's (soft) reboot of the classic Kaiju film series that acts as a direct followup to the 50's original, aiming to bring it back down to it's roots as more a grounded warning of the power of nuclear power, in contrast to the campy monster "vs" movies the series had become over the past couple decades.

After the titular monster awakens from a decades long slumber it attacks a Soviet nuclear submarine & Japan finds itself in the middle of Cold War drama as the Soviets & Americans jointly agree that the best course of action would be to nuke him out of existence right on Tokyo's doorstep, and the Japanese must find a way to neutralize the threat before real catastrophe strikes.

It mostly still holds up, all things considered. It does feel like there was at least some level of pressure to shoehorn in some toy marketing material with the whole "Super X" subplot (a futuristic flying war machine with laser blasters & the like), but otherwise the more political elements & pretty grounded military capabilities make the effort successful.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@LN78 Yup. I know what you mean. I left some brief thoughts of The Killing of a Sacred Deer a few posts up, which also stars Farrell and by the same director as The Lobster. I preferred The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but hardly remember what happened in The Lobster.

Edit: I saw it on Netflix a couple of weeks ago.

Fantasia really is an odd one. I appreciate a lot of the more artsy elements and the abstract accompaniments to the classical music is beautiful. That being said, it’s bloody long and the conductor guy’s moments to camera are really stiff.

@LN78 It has a similar odd tone about it, but the story felt a bit more coherent than The Lobster.

@LN78 I didn't know what to make of Enemy either. I'm petrified of spiders, so that made it almost unbearable to watch at times though.

Finished watching Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Pretty good movie, although I didn't like it as much as Man of Steel. It takes way too long to get going and there weren't that many fights in the movie. Not to mention the battle between Batman and Superman was pretty underwhelming. I liked the movie primarily because of the introduction of more characters to the DCEU. Really looking forward to watching their movies.

@RogerRoger The version I watched was 2.5 hours, so it has to be the theatrical cut. Didn't know there was an ultimate edition. Is it better than the regular version?

@LN78 Same here with Seven Psychopaths. I went into with great expectations but came away really disappointed.

Which is similar to what I felt when I watched Top Gun Maverick last night. I thought it was average at best and felt I seen it been done before a dozen times. My expectations weren't that high as I was never a fan of the original. It looks really good and the plane scenes were kind of exciting, but half of the time I was really bored by it. And I do like a no brainer action film now and again, but for whatever reason Top Gun Maverick did nothing for me.

@RogerRoger Ah okay, that sounds good then and thank you for explaining the extra content!

Just finished watching the next DC movie on my watchlist, which is Suicide Squad. I actually really liked it! I've heard people complain about some of the characters and I don't really mind them. Margot Robbie does an outstanding job as Harley Quinn. Jared Leto as Joker is interesting. I mean, I haven't really seen a young gangster Joker before, but I think it's really cool. Although my favourite Joker is still Heath Ledger's. Jared Leto's wasn't crazy and unpredictable enough like you'd expect from the Joker. I'm not that big on Batman lore, but I think the Joker isn't supposed to like Harley Quinn as much as he does in Suicide Squad. He'd happily sacrifice her to get what he wants but she would still go back to him regardless.

Will Smith as Deadshot was very good as well. I also liked the inclusion of Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, Katana and Diablo. Tons of great characters and watching this movie has made me hyped for the upcoming Suicide Squad game.

So yeah, great movie overall and I'm looking forward to watching Wonder Woman next.

@LN78 What was really so bad about the Snyderverse movies?

@LN78 "The writing"

Thanks for that in depth criticism.

Man of Steel was a decent start in my opinion. It needed to have a darker tone because a) DC Comics are darker and b) they needed to stand out from the MCU.

B vs S Ultimate Edition solves all of the "Martha" problems which were raised in the theatrical version and whilst I still have my gripes it was decent but was a victim of studio interference (this effected the whole franchise)

SS wasn't bad but not great.

WW was great

JL (1st version) wasn't the worst thing committed to screen but not good either.

Snyder Cut was awesome

Aquaman was great and Shazam was fun.

The biggest flaw in the DCEU was the top execs wanting to replicate in 5 years what the MCU had taken 10, they interfered, meddled and demanded rewrites. This was obvious at the time but Critical Drinker offers a really good summary of the events on YouTube.

The DCEU just needed time, it produced good films on tough timelines and corporate interference, they could have easily matched MCU with time and patience but greed got the better of WB.

Let's face it even SS is better than MCU phase bore could ever be.

@LN78 "but I'm really not interested in arguing about quality screenwriting with someone who thinks that "Die Another Day" is underrated or that a click grifter like The Critical Drinker provides savvy media analysis."

No worries mate, I thought there was more to you but it seems you only like having convos and debates with people who share your opinions.
