@LN78 well if you do end up catching it on a sale, definitely let me know your thoughts… good or bad 👍

@LN78 Interview with the Vampire spans both vampires and Tom Cruise! I actually really like that movie even though it’s rather silly.

@RogerRoger Yeah I was thinking about how great it was that they managed to fit both Sonic 2 and 3 games into the second movie, in terms of characters that is. It definitely makes the movies much better that way.

@LN78 Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed back in action to fight Commodus' ghost, we will be entertained!

I do miss the old sword and sandal epics like Gladiator and Troy.

According to Deadline, Ridley Scott is actually going ahead with the oft-rumoured "Gladiator 2". Given his recent history with belated sequels I wonder if this is cause for celebration or not.

Don’t tell me it’ll be based on the script where a dead Maximus is travelling through the layers of a Greco-Roman hell-scape?!?! 😃

Edit. Just saw your next post 😔

@LN78 At least Paul Mescal’s a much much better choice than the other ones that auditioned. Unless it was Twinkiator then I’m not sure.

The wife and I recently watched Sleepers. As we are going through older films we missed growing up, or maybe weren't age appropriate for at the time. (Not that it didn't stop us from seeing certain films).

@LN78 I was thinking the same. I have a feeling Mad God by Phil Tippet will be miles better than it. Will share my thoughts once I've seen it at some point this weekend.

Puss n Boots I'll probably put on Netflix when my nieces and nephews are over.

@LN78 Yes, I did read that after watching it as was having a debate with my other half if it did actually happen.

Phil Tippett's Mad God, what an insane movie. Loved every second of it. Will probably be sometime before I see a film as nuts as this again!

I watched that documentary about Mickey Mouse on Disney+ last night. It was a bit saccharine for my tastes but understandable given the subject matter and the fact that American documentaries do tend to be a little glossier. Obviously you aren’t likely to get the most critical look at him as a corporate entity from a Disney production but at least they attempted to address the overzealous copyright protection, the blackface, the groping cartoons etc. Better than glossing over it. While I would prefer a drier, more in depth documentary on the company (open to recommendations), it was still an enjoyable enough watch.

@LN78 Off the top of my head:

1. Fight Club (I blame this on already knowing the twist at the end and the outrageous hype around it)

2. The Breakfast Club (watched this one not too long ago, maybe I missed the hype train again. I could see what they were trying to do but didn't think it was executed well)

3. Joker (very controversial opinion I imagine but just found it hard work and believe that it wouldn't have gotten the critical reception it did had it not been addressing the issue of mental health.

I agree with your view on E.T. by the way but I've never seen the others.

@The_Moose Yeah I didn't find Joker an enjoyable experience either. I can appreciate the craft involved, but that was a difficult watch for me.

Well-regarded films that I don't think much of. Hmm...

Bridesmaids
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Goldfinger
The Godfather
The Goonies
The Shining
Vertigo

I'm sure there are more, but those immediately come to mind.

@LN78 It appears two of mine are in the list. I guess when they send out the assassins to silence dissent, I'm first on the chopping block.

Whilst I am actually enraged by Goldfinger being on your list you have reminded me that I didn't like The Godfather either.

@The_Moose @LN78 Goldfinger was so bad it felt like a parody of itself. Never understood the appeal, especially since Connery's Bond had a really good initial run of films until that one.

As for The Godfather, it's... probably a good film, but good lord was it boring. Second film I've actually fallen asleep during, the first being Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring, which took me four separate tries to actually watch all the way through.

On my end, I actually do think 2001: A Space Odyssey is the one Kubrick film that actually lives up to the hype, so to speak. One of the most forward-thinking and intelligent films I've ever seen.

@Ralizah @LN78

Goldfinger is the best Bond film starring the best Bond. It set and perfected the formula which all Bond films stuck too for the most part. Quantum of Solace didn't and is the worst Bond movie.

From Russia With Love is overrated in my opinion. I find it quite a slow burn, not a bad film but not one of the greats.

Goldfinger has some of the cringiest one-liners in the entire series. Bond acts like a buffoon the entire time. It's also one of the most rapey films in the series, and any scene with Pussy Galore in it is almost unwatchable.

Is it iconic? Unfortunately, yes, and I think it's a huge reason why many people don't think highly of Connery's run, despite his run probably being the best in terms of the average quality of the films (no love from me for the eternity that Roger Moore was in the role).

The best thing about it is that it inspired a lot of the gags from the first Austin Powers, which IS a film I actually like.

As for From Russia With Love, it's a classic spy film and a top three Bond movie alongside Casino Royale and OHMSS.

And yes, QoS is worse than Goldfinger, I'll grant that.
