I enjoyed Soul, but I feel like its interesting existentialistic themes are betrayed a bit by the film's goofy metaphysics. I broadly agree it would have been better as a short film. Still one of their better flicks, though.
Inside Out is D-tier for me. On the same level as Cars 2 and The Good Dinosaur. Then again, I've never liked the idea of anthropomorphizing human emotions. I don't feel like it's an insightful way of viewing human psychology, and the emotions are, by design, very limited in their characterization.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
@Ralizah I quite like most of Inside Out but it’s another one hampered by the exact same structure. Plus Sadness is inherently terrible as a character. She’s frustratingly terrible and I get why, it just doesn’t make for a fun movie. I was a lot more invested in Riley’s life than the other story revolving around Joy and Sadness going from point A to point B.
Apparently the Oscars goody bag includes a plot of land in Scotland along with a meaningless title. Lovely. So we can’t afford a bloody house but nah, here you go Breckin Meyer, take a square foot of land.

rewatching Halloween 2018 and watching Halloween Kills extended version dvd
Free Guy - Comedy set within a GTA like video game where NPC Guy (Ryan Reynolds) becomes self aware. Nothing remarkable, but it was a fun time IMO.
X-Men: the Last Stand - I haven't read the comics, but I thought this was fine (I certainly didn't enjoy it particularly less than the first two). That said, they definitely seemed to write themselves into a corner by effectively ending the stories of multiple characters, so I'm interested in seeing how they retcon some of it. I think they bring back a few killed characters due to a butterfly effect in Days of Future Past if I recall correctly, though Xavier ends TLS in a new body and I think he starts out (DoFP) still in "Patrick Stewart's" body before that takes effect, so I'm not sure if that's ever explained.
the Shape of Water - Probably the most unconventional take on a "Beauty & the Beast" style narrative I've ever encountered (I really kept thinking, "did they really just go there!", lol). That said I liked the period piece sci-fi/cold war espionage angle & thought it was a very interesting watch overall.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@LN78 nope, completely random. They finished with Mars Attacks which was a bit of a let down. Harvey and Miami Connection were both really enjoyable! Off to bed I go 😴😴😴
@nessisonett I wasn’t watching them but was able to find the footage uncensored on some Twitter feed from Japanese television. That was… uncomfortable. At first it looked staged, until second time Smith yells “keep my wife’s name out of your f**kin’ mouth!” Then Rock clearly started to feel uncomfortable and stammered through his next introduction.
I’ve always wondered how the M.C. of these kinds of events can get away with roasting celebrities and saying rude things about people. The joke was a relatively minor one, but obviously sometimes people are sensitive about certain things (in the case of Mrs. Smith, her hair loss disorder) and I just find most comedians and most stand up comedy so incredibly rude.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
Talk crap and you run the risk of getting a slap. It's not as if he put the guy in hospital. Having said that, it's fair game at an awards ceremony like this, you know there are going to be some harsh jokes so you should steel yourself for the worst before hand. And hey, G.I Jane is a tough character so is it really a terrible comparison..? Not a good look for anybody at the end of the day, very embarrassing!
@kyleforrester87@RogerRoger I think that the response was brought on by the dutiful feeling to defend his wife’s honor, rather than how harsh the joke actually was. If Rock had poked fun or highlighted one of W. Smith’s physical attributes then he probably would have laughed it off.
I agree that context is key, and I think we’re all guilty of saying things we regret and innocently offending someone when we think we are either being funny or simply making conversation. I’ve learned through harsh experiences to never comment on someone else’s appearance or physical qualities. Even if you think you’re giving a compliment, it can sometimes backfire. Highlighting and bringing attention to something even as innocent as a haircut can strike a nerve from which you have to pull the proverbial foot out of your mouth.
I had an acquaintance several years ago who struggled with body dysmorphia who taught me that even commenting on my own physical qualities (like saying “oh man, I feel so fat after that huge meal”) was triggering to their disorder. So I had to adjust when and how I could make such comments and in what context.
Being in a mixed group of people or a public setting is particularly difficult to navigate. I was once carrying on and joking around with a group of friends and said something innocently about a group of people that I thought was funny (nothing horrible mind you, it was just a social club of people who were not present or represented there at the time) and everyone laughed so I kept going and then one person piped up and chastised us for joking about them in such a flippant manner. Awkward muted laughs from everyone followed, just like what the audience did after the first scolding that Smith yelled out at the Oscars. People thought it was still a joke, until it was clear that it was someone truly coming to the defense of a person (or people) not present. It pulled the air out of the room, but needed to be said. I learned a life lesson that day, and have tried to be more sensitive since. And I suspect Chris Rock will also think twice in the future if he makes a joke about someone’s wife or family member.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
I was never really that fond of Chris Rock but the way he handled the situation was literally pretty cool. Will Smith, on the other hand, completely lost his head. Mad git. Hollywood eh?
@LN78 I saw this and added it to my wish list straight away, along with An American Werewolf in London. I think the majority of the 4K blu rays that I own are older films that I grew up with in the eighties, nineties and noughties.
Glad to hear Robocop got a decent transfer!
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
I watched The Wretched last night (included with Prime). It wasn’t bad at all tbh, but anything with a witch in it gets an extra couple of points in my book.
