@ralphdibny Aww, I'm rather flattered, thank you! Would always be up for some Battlefront II, but that's a difficult game to relax and chat with, given its frantic, action-packed nature. More of a "let's stick together and we'll co-ordinate a strategy" kinda evening.

Might be a good idea to just boot the game back up and see whether it's something you wanna continue playing or not. Depending on how far you got, I'm not sure your Gorn would be able to enter Earth orbit, but there are plenty of neutral systems we could meet up in. It's a shame that you can't invite other players aboard your starships, as I've got all the cool interiors from the shows.

Happy to make some time whenever suits, but don't put any "proper" games on pause for this, as it's still just an eleven-year-old, free-to-play MMORPG at the end of the day!

@RogerRoger haha I think you are overestimating my ability to play online shooting games 😅. I actually played a bit of it the other day for some Microsoft rewards points and i was rubbish at it!

Yeah that's cool, just could chillax with no pressure to do any gameplay stuff or maybe just see what there is to do when we get there. Cool though, I'll shoot you a message on PS soon-ish. Might be in the next couple weeks because my schedule just got busy due to work popping up for the next 3 days plus other stuff I was doing at the weekend anyway. But yeah, I'll send you a message and we can work something out 😃

See ya!

RogerRoger

@ralphdibny I'm sure you're better than you think you are. We'll pick a time when the servers are guaranteed to be full of casuals and mop the floor with 'em!

No worries, and no rush. I only ever get my PSN messages when I turn on my PS4 or PS5 anyway and so, if I'm busy on other platforms for a while, I might not pick it up straight away anyway. If there's an (entirely accidental and coincidental) delay, jostle me on here, please!

Good luck with work, and looking forward to showing off my starships!

Lower Decks Season 1 and Discovery Season 3 are getting UK Blu ray releases in November, woop!

See ya!

RogerRoger

@ralphdibny Good news for fans of those shows!

I'm still nervously waiting for an announcement about where us Brits can watch Star Trek: Prodigy. I really hope it joins Picard and Lower Decks on Amazon Prime, and that it crosses the Atlantic in a timely manner, otherwise I think I'm gonna struggle. It's the one new Star Trek show that I'm actually starting to get properly edge-of-my-seat hyped for.

@RogerRoger I had no idea that lower Decks was even on Amazon Prime. It's so far ahead in my (re)viewing schedule that I've not been too fussed about what service it's on, I just want them to come to blu ray so I can put them on the shelf and get around to them at some point. I'm still halfway through TOS and my partner and I haven't watched it since January. Fingers crossed they don't do any more pre-TOS prequels or it will throw our viewing schedule out of wack!

I'm as excited for Prodigy as I am for the other series I haven't seen yet I think (LD, P, Discovery 3). Ya know I just love star trek 😂

I wonder what will happen with the alt timeline movies. They've been hot and cold on Star Trek 4 (14). Wish they'd done that Tarantino script, would have been very interesting!

See ya!

RogerRoger

@ralphdibny If there's one good thing about Star Trek, it's that all of it invariably comes to Blu-Ray and DVD sooner rather than later. As much as I doubt I'll ever let my Disney+ subscription slide for long, I'd really like the option to buy The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Bad Batch on actual discs but, no matter what happens with Star Trek: Prodigy, there's a much higher chance I'll be able to own it eventually someday, even if I have to wait nine months and pre-order the steelbook.

Um... yeah, so there's a show called Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which is due out next year, and it's definitely gonna wreck your viewing schedule. Sorry!

Apparently there are two new Star Trek movies in the works, and neither are Tarantino's!

@RogerRoger haha oh yeah, I forgot about Strange new worlds. Shouldn't be too much of an issue as I'm still in TOS. Might work well actually as a reminder to my partner of who Christopher Pike is if it comes out before we watch The Menagerie.

Really need to get back on it though. We are supposed to be moving in together soon when we find a decent place at a decent price so should hopefully be back on the Trek wagon by the end of the year 🤞

It's a shame it's all going streaming now. I'd still collect them if I hadn't started getting them on discs. Only id get them digitally instead of physically.(Edit: decided to delete my long winded tangent on piracy because it seemed unnecessarily irrelevant 😅)

@ralphdibny Oh cool, fingers tightly crossed for your home-hunting endeavours! Hope it goes well, and that you can find someplace you both like without making too many compromises!

And don't worry, your piracy tangent was preserved in my email inbox. I'll delete it later!

@RogerRoger cheers and you can keep it if you like! A memento of my anti-extreme capitalist/stand up for the 97% nature. I just deleted it because sometimes I forget how boring it is to listen to somebody's passionate rantings 😂

I really need to get back into Trek sometime. I started watching it from the beginning several years ago.

I got through the original series, animated series, Generation, DS9 all the movies up to about that point on the timeline and a season of Voyager before being burnt out.

DS9 out of all I've seen so far was my favourite. Now that I've left it a few years there is even more shows to catch up on (・o・)

MightyDemon82

RogerRoger

@MightyDemon82 Blimey, you hit burnout much later than I would've done! Most I've ever managed is two of the separate shows in a row, I think. Doesn't help that all the new shows are dotted around the timeline; I think you'd be best off sticking with your release order run, as and when you continue!

So Paramount have announced that they've already cast the new James T.Kirk (a guy called Paul Wesley - I've never heard of him) for the second season of "Strange New Worlds". I think this pretty much confirms that what we have here is most likely going to be a backdoor remake of/attempt to usurp the original series. Pretty scummy move if you ask me.

@LN78 That’s the dude from Vampire Diaries. I’m sure he must be a real thespian. Mind, William Shatner is a woeful actor so I guess it fits?

LN78

@nessisonett I have no idea what that is. Shatner had his moments in "Star Trek". Few and far between but they were there - particularly in the "Genesis Trilogy" movies. I tend to put him in the same category as actors like Adam West and Roger Moore.

@LN78 I watched that Strange New Worlds trailer the other day, when it dropped at the same time as the trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi. I find it funny how Star Trek keeps getting pulled back to the 1960s whilst Star Wars is busy weaponising '90s nostalgia. I know that's a bit apples and oranges of me to note, but it also highlights how all this revitalised Star Trek has struggled to define itself in recent years. It's a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and can't really be expected to be all of them at once, but I'm not sure that splitting the audience between a dozen different shows is the solution, either.

Anyway, that trailer didn't impress me. I'm with you in thinking that yet another fresh take on the original series would be a mistake. Less because of my attachment to Shatner's Kirk (although I do adore him, and the fact you mentioned him in the same breath as my favourite Batman and favourite Bond up there is very telling) and more because I'm just bored of those characters and that premise.

Isn't the whole point of Star Trek to seek out new stuff, and boldly go forwards instead of back?

@RogerRoger I think it's fair to say that nostalgia in entertainment has been around for a long time - there was a whole slew of TV remakes in the aftermath of the success of "The Addams Family" in the early 90's for example - and franchises such as "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" were famously born out of Lucas' love for the matinee cliffhanger serials of the 1930s that he watched as a child. Not to disparage your favourite franchise but I think what's different about what we're seeing with "Strange New Worlds" (if it does indeed turn out to be some bizarre cannibalistic retread of "TOS") is very likely due to the success of "The Force Awakens" - for reasons I'm sure you can appreciate. I'm in 100% agreement with you. I'm sick and tired of franchises with universes of untapped story telling potential (and if they want to be lazy about it hundreds or if not thousands of hours worth of already extant peripheral material to adapt) retreading the same old ground. I love Kirk and Spock (and Luke and Vader) but I yearn for something new. Unfortunately playing it safe and ringing the nostalgia bell (over and over and over) has proven to be far too lucrative and let's be honest far too easy - especially now when companies are desperate for recognisable brand content to fill the hours on their streaming services. It won't stop. Ever. Until we are dead.

@LN78 You're right, I think The Force Awakens has a lot to answer for. You could also go back to those other characters you referenced, and point the finger at the one-two punch of Batman Begins and Casino Royale, two successful films released in close proximity which opened the reboot floodgates.

Honestly, I don't mind the concept of a remake if one is justified; people just need to be patient. When it's been a handful of decades and younger generations is struggling to engage with an iconic part of popular culture then by all means, have at it. But it feels like we just finished a trilogy of flashy, funny and fast-paced original series reboot movies when Discovery started banging on about Spock, and contrived a tenuous connection between him and its "new" protagonist (and I think I saw an interview once where the producers admitted that getting the Discovery to meet the Enterprise at the end of the first season was the show's entire point, which is probably what's making this recent revelation seem so premeditated). The unfortunate result is that I'm so exhausted with Spock now, which I never wanted to be, because Leonard Nimoy was and will always be a legend, and Zachary Quinto did well in the role, too.

And yes, you're bang on target with your point about streaming services needing content. That was one of the criticisms I saw regarding The Book of Boba Fett and, despite really enjoying that show, I kinda can't argue. It all just felt like content, designed to generate and maintain subscriptions with its six episodes tipping its run over a single month. I do wonder how many of these new Star Trek shows started with a genuinely good idea, and how many started with a "we need something for this demographic" mandate.

@RogerRoger My referring to "The Force Awakens" wasn't in the context of it being a series reboot, rather the fact that it was (in retrospect) a pretty straight (but stealthy) remake of the original film. Given that it was an unquestionable financial success (and that Hollywood is a town full of uncreative accountants who invariably learn the wrong lessons from their successes) it follows that they would attempt a similar strategy by furtively remaking the original series of "Star Trek". Speaking of Bond, did you post a review for 'No Time To Die"? I haven't seen it yet (but I do know all of its twists and turns including THAT ending) but as a fellow Bond fan I'd love to know your thoughts.
