Topic: Which game do you REGRET buying the most?

There are a few that I regret but mainly because they highlight my (repeated) foolishness in buying into pre-release hype - the usual suspects, I'm afraid. So take a bow "No Man's Sky", " Cyberpunk 2077" and "Death Stranding". Another perhaps more unusual pick is "WipeOut Omega Collection" and not because it's a bad game by any measure rather than because it's the only game (in its PSVR mode) to ever make me feel physically nauseous - a feeling I'm in no hurry to replicate by playing it again!

@nessisonett Ok, so I regret buying Horizon FW. I actually could have bought Elden Ring instead. Seeing its subreddit and its "Bloodborne like gameplay" it really looks tempting....

I brought train sim world with the specific aim of 100% on the trophies. That was before they added 3 lists worth of them. šŸ˜ž

Elden Ring - since starting it, the everyday grind irl has never seemed soā€¦ grindy!

Divergent95

Full price: Anthem [I waited so long for the 2.0 update but we know how that ended so...]

On sale: Bloodborne [Won't get into details but those who see FromSoft differently will understand why]

Runner up games: Werewolf The Apocalypse - Earthblood, Dying Light, Darksiders III.

There are more, but these immediately come to mind.

  • Edit: Forgot to add Elex. Probably the worst game I ever played in my life. And to think they didn't even bother to revamp the combat in the sequel shows how the devs literally copy-pasted the thing.

@Kairu Itā€™s understandable. It had a lot of hype outside of Souls fans similar to Elden Ring but not everyone gets on with those games.

@Kairu

  • It runs like sh*t.
  • There isn't a proper tutorial, it's basically FIGURE IT OUT, YOU PEASANT!
  • Terrible UI (in my opinion) and I don't like how convoluted the leveling system is. The Surge 2 has a straightforward system and that's a AA game.
My last reason would be the non-existent story. Like, I felt no desire to "push through" the difficulty because there was simply no narrative to, you know, guide me. It's another thing when you, for example, have a story of a little girl that is in danger and she calling out to you.

@Fragile I do think FromSoft has responded to some of those complaints @Divergent95 listed. Apparently the tutorial issue in the second bullet point is actually much better in Elden Ring compared to the earlier titles and the game does teach and tutor much better than before. Also Iā€™m guessing theyā€™ve addressed the fourth point (lack of story) by hiring GRR Martin, although Iā€™m not sure how much good itā€™s done. But youā€™re right that the core of their games certainly sounds like has been maintained undiluted.

Another one for me was Breath of the Wild. As a long time Zelda fan I could not wait to play this game. Instead of a glorious Zelda game in the vein of OoT or other 3D Zeldas, I instead got a soulless Zelda Game that thought it was Skyrim. Add to that the constant needing to carry 100 weapons on you because of your weapon breaking on you everything, no thank you. Ended up trading that one in really quick.

Anything by FromSoftware...Sacrilege! I hear you shout! But Iā€™m always so crap at them. Bought Bloodborne cos I loved the aesthetics of it, but never got that far into it. Later bought Sekiro cos people said it was ā€œeasierā€...not for me it wasnā€™t. I impulsively bought Demons Souls (PS5) cos it looked so darn good, but again I never got that far. I think Iā€™ve actually learnt my lesson now cos Iā€™ve resisted buying Elden Ring, despite all the glowing reviews for it.

@Nightcrawler71 Thatā€™s totally understandable, theyā€™re not for everyone. Elden Ring does improve on the irritation a lot though, itā€™s more approachable and rewards your time so much better. You can just wander about for ages and find plenty of fun.

@Nightcrawler71 I totally get that (I never bought any of them myself but I was tempted many times, tried Bloodborne on PS+ and the Demon's Souls remake borrowed from a friend) but this is the first time I'm hearing anyone saying Sekiro was supposed to be easier!
I've heard it was the hardest one!

@Voltan itā€™s ā€˜easierā€™ to get to the first bossā€¦ then all bets are off!

@velio84 @colonelkilgore I am really tempted to pick up Sekiro but still donā€™t think I understand the differences between it and the usual souls type games. Are there any other games it can be compared to?

render

LN78

@render At the time it came out a lot of people compared it to the "Tenchu" series - but honestly there's not really much of a stealth element to "Sekiro". The combat system is absolutely brilliant but if you don't get it then you're stuck because unlike with the "Souls" games there are no alternatives to the katana. You HAVE to master the block/parry/counter techniques or you're getting nowhere. I absolutely love the game but if you can borrow/rent a copy I'd recommend doing that before spending any money.

@render so I loved Sekiro, itā€™s a really really good gameā€¦ but itā€™s my least favourite From Soft game. The reason being, that the souls-like genre is my absolute favourite game-genre (my comfort-food)ā€¦ and I wouldnā€™t consider Sekiro a souls like.

Itā€™s very similar but also distinctly different, as strange as that sounds. First itā€™s really an action-adventure as opposed to an action-RPG but also, the combat is timed/rhythmic blocking as opposed to the way I play souls-likes (dodging attacks to create an opening to capitalise on).

Itā€™s still awesome thoughā€¦ and unmistakably From Software, I would definitely suggest you give it a go. Iā€™m going back to it later this year as it goesā€¦ and really looking forward to it.

@render I will also throw my hat in the Sekiro ring. It was my GOTY that year, but like others have mentioned I wouldn't class as the same type of game as the Souls games and Bloodborne. For one you can't grind to make yourself OP and there is no mulitplayer or NPC summons either.

It is the most difficult out of those I found. But once you get the combat, it is also the best. It feels almost like a rhythm action game at times, and I generally dislike those types of games.

There are similarities though like resting at lamps resets everything and going back to your blood stain to get back your Souls (don't remember what they are called in Sekiro). It also has the same magical enemy and level design that comes with a Miyazaki crafted game.

It actually does sound like Sekiro could be the one for me. Is it also somewhat more linear than Souls? The lack of grind/leveling makes it sound that way.

@LN78 @colonelkilgore @velio84 @JohnnyShoulder Damn thatā€™s it then looks like I have no choice, Iā€™m going to have to buy it. Thanks for all your replies - although I might not be thanking you so much when Iā€™m pulling my hair out šŸ˜…

Seriously though it sounds great and even though Iā€™m no good at parrying either if itā€™s not like souls parrying then I might stand a chance. I think Iā€™ll queue this up after Iā€™ve finished Cyberpunk.

Fight_Teza_Fight

There are very few games that I regret buying. I was only allowed 2 games/year (birthday & Xmas) so from a young age I was very deliberate with my purchases.

Howeverā€¦1 year I got Alone in the Dark for PS2. Easily the worst game Iā€™ve ever played & didnā€™t even finish it.

Most recently though is the Monster Boy remake. I got in on sale for like Ā£7 & still felt ripped off.
