Topic: Which game do you REGRET buying the most?

ApostateMage

MGS The Phantom Pain. I bought it for another deep espionage story with glorious cheesy dialogue but instead got a silent Jack Bauer doing side missions in canyons and deserts. Huge downward spiral from Snake Eater.

@nessisonett I will be getting HFW eventually, but may bit a longer than originally anticipated. One due to how long I will be spending in Elden Ring and then how long I until the game is flushed out of my system from when I stop playing it.

I had a similar experience when I was playing Zelda BOTW and started MGS The Phantom Pain, and just could not get into the latter game.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@ApostateMage did you not play Ground Zeros out of interest? I do agree MGS5 was ultimately a disappointment as far as story goes but the gameplay was a lot of fun for a while.

Overall I think Ground Zeros was better than PP though. Somehow being so small made it better.

@nessisonett You're dead to me....

The most recent one for me would be Returnal. I may go back to it eventually, but it's the first PS5 game I started and nowhere near finished because of it being a rougelike and it being a pain to save scum to get around that.

@Fragile Ingoring the roguelike aspects, the game itself is actually pretty good. Really good graphics, nice fast paced gameplay, and it used the DualSense really well. I just hate having to start over from the beginning every time I die, which I knew going in, but thought save scumming would be the solution. It's annoying having to upload the save, and then close the game and download the game save every time I die.

If you didn't have to constantly close and then reload the game in order to do it, then it wouldn't be as bad. Maybe I'm being lazy, but oh well I guess in the end. Like I said, I might give it a second chance someday as I have kept my copy of the game.

@Fragile Well, yeah, there's that little game called Horizon Forbidden West that is keeping me busy. I didn't mention it in the thread, so I guess it hasn't disappointed. It better not have since I was looking forward to that ever since it was revealed back in 2020.

Then I'll probably finally play Cyberpunk 2077 after that. Sorry, not going to be playing Gran Turismo 7 anytime soon. It released at a horrible time for me to give it a shot.

Just don’t die then 😉

@render Exactly, that's what I did and it worked just fine

@Fragile Since the PS5 upgrade was free, it could end up being worth the money. Yeah, you could have gotten it much cheaper now, but you could end up being ok in the end.

@render Sorry, the whole git gud mentality is a load of crap. I'll buy @Voltan a cookie too since he's so awesome. I know you two are just joking, but like I just said, that whole git gud mentality is borderline egotistical, etc.

Being pissed off about something else non-gaming related right now probably doesn't help, as I usually just joke around on here, but I truthfully have never been a fan of that mentality but usually just shrug it off.

@KilloWertz As you know I was totally joking. I never have been or ever will be gud. I can’t even remember how many attempts it took me to finish Returnal but must have been north of 50 - and has more likely shrunk my ego than inflated it.

Sorry to hear you are having a bad day though, hope things get better soon.

@render Thanks. It's mainly about having to do something about my taxes that would have taken 5 minutes that now has turned into a production because my state's website is a piece of crap that hasn't worked properly in years.

Played some Horizon Forbidden West, which helped for the most part. Had a climbing issue that was probably more annoying today, and I really wish they marked everything you did as Completed and not just certain things. I died and thought the game save put me back before it, so I climbed and it took a while, only to find out that the game remembered I blew up that particular Firegleam. So, that was the climbing issue, but I'll be fine.

You talk to us and have us on your friends list. You can't be that "gud".

@KilloWertz sorry, I didn’t mean to come off like that! I hope it’s a better day for you tomorrow

@Voltan Thanks, but it's cool. You're not getting your cookie, but I'm over it. I overreacted a bit anyways.

Returnal and Elden Ring su.... I mean, never mind.

My one game I regret buying was FIFA road to world cup 98 on N64. I can't stand football but bought it for something to play with my friends.

Doom VFR
Onrush
RDR2
Man of Medan
Lego Star Wars (TFA)
Dying Light
Borderlands 3

Army Men (N64)

Edit: somehow i forgot LBP3 which certainly tops the list as it was a Christmas gift for 3 kids who loved the previous games, only for it to never work correctly. If there's a game I could say I truly hate, it's that one.

@zupertramp Oh wow, I remember those Army Men games from the fifth generation! Felt like there was a new one pumped out every week, and they were always destined for the bargain bin. Never played one myself, thanks to the magic of magazine demo discs allowing me to experience their mediocrity for free, but they had quite the reputation, and were the punchline of many a joke.

Also agreed that LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens was an entirely unnecessary game.

@RogerRoger yeah Lego TFA particularly stings because I pre-ordered and everything. Mostly for my wife (the star wars nerd) and my kind of 2 non-gaming kids but neither really ever touched it. Ah well. At least the rest of my regrets were on sale. Okay maybe not Borderlands 3.*

And yeah I think it was Army Men Sarge's Heroes of something like that. This was like 20+ years ago and I'm still carrying the memory of that game's utter mediocrity, as you called it. What's weird is I know there were some duds I bought for the Wii but for the life of me I can't recall any games from that era. It's really a blur.

For the record I've played all of the new Terror Billy related Wolfensteins (from Old Blood to Youngblood) and surely none of them were amazing but they gave me something mindless to do. And my son generally enjoyed them. But the regret is understandable.

*updated my previous list with LBP3. really don't know how that slipped my mind.

@zupertramp Yeah, I did the same, and I'm not even sure why in hindsight, because it's not like the movie blew me away or anything. I'm much more excited for the forthcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga because at least I know it'll include some Star Wars that I actually like, and the fact that they've finally updated the LEGO game formula holds more promise than usual.

Oh boy, the Wii was notorious for playing host to shovelware. It was real easy to get caught out by sub-par titles, especially when shopping for somebody else (never owned the console myself; my Dad had one for family parties and golf games). Maybe it's for the best that you can't remember any specifics!

Feels like I rag on Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus so often around here, it's in danger of becoming a catchphrase, but I really was disappointed by it. I actually enjoyed The New Order and The Old Blood. They pushed me a little outside of my comfort zone (don't usually like icky games) but were schlocky enough to stay fun, and the gameplay was a cracking, competent update on those old shareware shooters I grew up with, which is why I pre-ordered The New Colossus. I think "mindless" is a good word, both as a complement and as a criticism. I've still got all three games on my shelf, and keep meaning to replay them someday, just to see if I'm holding an inaccurate candle.

Risen 3. Grand Ages Medieval. Aven Colony. Elite Dangerous. GTA5. The Order. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. Something to keep in mind is these were all at discount prices. Or bargain bin. The order and rebel galaxy are actually OK just don’t want to play them. First rebel galaxy is much better.
