@Kidfried The rift tether mechanic was really well done but the first time I used it, it really confused my brain/eyes.

The weapons are good fun but there are a lot which feel pretty superfluous. I did get almost all up to lvl5 though.

Are you on course for the platinum? The only one requiring challenge mode is collecting all weapons but you only have to play about five mins of the game to get to the first weapons vendor (and they’re only one bolt each!).

Thrillho

Kidfried

@Thrillho I have over 250,000 bolts. So I'm kind of sad to hear I won't be able to use them for anything!

And I agree that some of the weapons were kind of unnecessary. The flying bomber and the peacemaker spring to mind, who played just like variations on other weapons. Meanwhile, a gun like the pylon gun from Returnal would have been a welcome addition.

What's your favorite? Mine were the plant gun (especially in combination with the sniper so strong) and the ricochet.

And I have all the trophies aside from finishing the game and acquiring all the weapons. I was already afraid I missed a weapon somewhere, but apparently challenge mode is the way to getting them.

Aside from the bear trophy (which I spent hours on yesterday night), I got all of them during normal play. Even for the "hidden trophies" you didn't need to do anything weird, just interacting with everything you come across. I think this might become the easiest platinum for me in a while.

@Kidfried I had a mild panic after getting the RYNO and not having the weapon trophy ping so had to look that one up online. Like I say, if you skip the cutscenes in challenge mode then you’ll have the trophy within 10mins.

The ricochet was one of the ones I barely used actually. A doom glove with Mr(s) Fungi supporting you using the lightning rod or black hole storm worker pretty well!

Thrillho

Kidfried

@Thrillho I actually stoped using the glove and Fungi at one point, because when fully upgraded I hardly had to do anything myself anymore. :')

Kidfried

Thrillho

@Kidfried Yeah, I mainly did it for boss fights or when there were just too many enemies at once.

The lightning rod was great for crowd control of little enemies though. Cold snap and buzz blades were the other two I barely used.

Thrillho

Kidfried

@Thrillho Cold snap came way too late in the game for it to be enticing. Also felt like an inferior plant gun: same effect, but you actually had to aim.

And buzz blades wasn't really an interesting concept. A gun with damage over time or something? Pretty much an inferior lightning rod, come to think of it.

I did level both weapons up to 5 somewhere in the last two days, but hardly remember what they do. Which says a lot about those two weapons!

Personally, I wouldn't have mind less weapons, if they had added some pocket dimensions focusing on each of the weapons.

Come to think of it, the pocket dimensions all having the same aesthetic was kind of a missed opportunity.

@velio84 Rift Apart has been a big success for Sony sales wise it seems, but yeah, it is a bit odd that the thread for it here is so small.

Returnal does lend itself more to discussions though given how difficult the game is. I'm sure a portion of the posts are for help with trying to get through an area or beat a boss. Thankfully the game is not for me or I'd likely at least be down a controller (I have 2, but still).

@Kidfried One thing I remembered I really didn’t like about the game actually were the Glitch sections. They kind of felt a bit superfluous but more than anything I think it was the fact that Glitch had the sort of voice acting I really hate; the high pitched, super sweet voicing that is normally heard in JRPGs.

Thrillho

Thrillho

@velio84 This is a great game but it is incredibly linear and there isn’t really much to talk about with it other than how much people are enjoying it.

Returnal is hard so more open to discussion on how to approach the game. It’s been fun to hear how people have experienced and tackled the game in different ways, and hear how people have got on with boss fights. Then there’s the story itself and act 3, as well as people’s’ attempt at the platinum. Much more to talk about!

Thrillho

Kidfried

@Thrillho I actually quite like the superfluous stuff in Ratchet & Clank games, always did. Like the rail grinding and hoverbike racing (Going Commando) before.

Kidfried

Kidfried

@velio84 I'd say Returnal is just the better game between those two.

A few reasons why we're still talking about Returnal:

  • It's a new franchise, which in this case means there's just more new stuff to talk about.
  • Returnal's story is way more open for interpretation and less straight forward.
  • It is a better shooter. Ratchet has really fun gunplay so definitely not a slight against Ratchet, but Returnal is actually better.
  • Returnal meant a way more ambitious project for the dev. Whereas Rift Apart in the end was less ambitious than could have been. It's certainly not a reinvention of a 20 year old series.

After five hours of Ratchet & Clank I had seen quite a few of the game's planets, while in Returnal I was still figuring out the basic gameplay in biome 1.

And more interesting doesn't always make a better game, but for me it goes a long way!

I really enjoyed my time with this game as a long running fan of the franchise. However, I do have some gripes.

  • A little too kid friendly. The humor the series has been known for has been slowly fading away.
  • A bit shorter than I would have liked. I miss trekking through numerous planets as of the old PS2 days.
  • Nefarious feels sidelined, and I miss Lawrence.
  • No Quark...which, is understandable given the actors condition
  • Omega weapons don't feel worth it this time around. In fact, weapon leveling seems sort of...shy this time around. Weapon upgrades used to feel really awesome.
  • Armor. I played on the highest difficulty without any armor. In the previous games, armor upgrades were always worth it and exciting to get. Here, they feel a bit redundant with how much there is, and how little effect they have on the player.

Just my thoughts. I truly loved the game, but I still think Up Your Arsenal is king.

Vertpin

Kidfried

@Vertpin The armor is always applied, even if you're not wearing it. So only if you don't collect them, you can play without them. I thought they were ugly, especially on Rivet.

Is that so? I recall after I had all the armor collected, I decided to equip the bolt increase armor set, and I noticed a substantial increase in bolts (I wasn’t on challenge mode, so it wasn’t the multiplier). I could definitely be wrong.

@Vertpin The only thing I will say is Nefarious was still the main villain for most of the game, so I didn't feel he really got sidelined much. If you really want to be technical, Nefarious is the villain for the whole game, but that's just being really technical.

I meant Nefarious as we know him from prior entries

Octane

So I'm stuck. It's on Blizar Prime, an optional mission called "Find the Missing Chef". I have to defend the VAC-A-SUK, whilst battling waves of enemies. But somehow the waves stopped after 2 or 3 of them. The battle music is still going, there's no enemy to be found. I thought one was stuck somewhere, but I've looked everywhere. I cannot die, I'll just respawn, and there's no way to leave...

Octane

Voltan

@Octane Huh - restarting and reloading a save doesn't fix it either?

Voltan

KilloWertz

@Octane Have you tried just closing the game and restarting it completely from the PS5 home screen? I had a part of a mission with Clank late in the game that glitched and the only way to get through it was to restart the game completely and then the area loaded properly. I tried just loading my gave save over again and that did nothing.

I know we're not talking about the same mission, but I figured I'd throw it out there since it seems to be a random glitch like I experienced in a different mission.

Just checking in on this thread since I’m playing through the game now. I would have to say I agree with most of the sentiments shared on here. Totally awesome game, but not without flaw. Feels really good to play and has that addictive nature of wanting to play just a little bit more during each play session.

I haven’t run into any large glitches, and I noticed @Kidfried ‘s remark about the auto-aim assist and I haven’t noticed that issue, so I wonder if it’s been patched out?

It’s been mentioned about the few things that the game maybe comes up short on (weapon and enemy variety, platforming, length, feeling of progression with upgrades, too frequent glitches into the environment, , etc, etc) and I mostly agree with these small complaints.

I’ll note a few things that are fantastic aspects to the game —

  • The hover boots are fabulous. They make travel so incredibly easy and quick around a map. During the opening hours I was annoyed at how minuscule of an effect the ‘click L3 to sprint’ action was. But after getting the hover boots, getting around is not only a breeze, but also a blast. Almost on par with swinging around as Spider-Man.
  • The switching of worlds through rifts and through the blazion crystals is instantaneous and seamless. It feels so good.
  • The number of regional accents in use is a nice touch and not sure if it comes across to our European and English friends, but I love how the Morts all have that awful Wisconsin/Midwest American accent. And the surfer dude accent and the hippee accents, and the robotic accents, the pirate accents, the Deep South / Georgia belle accent, etc, etc. They are all exaggerated for comedic effect but I really think it’s a nice touch
  • The density of environment was something that I initially complained about, with my geriatric sounding “There’s too much happening on screen” complaint. After getting accustomed to it, I found the detailed environments and density of NPCs, colors, and movement to be a highlight. It still makes exploration and combat harder, due to having a lot to track and differentiate friend and foe, but the lack of friendly fire and the overall ease of the game makes it a non-issue after some time. Some of the set pieces are just amazing in the environmental detail.
  • No loading screens. This is awesome. And to be honest, I suspect part of the reason people feel this game is short is because they are used to spending a cumulative hour or two watching a loading screen. Take all those away and the game feels shorter, but the time playing the game is probably on par with prior entries. Of course I’m guessing because I’m only 70% of the way through.
  • The hints have been great for this game and a reason that I think I might make a run for the platinum. I’ve used them to easily find a couple gold bolts and spybots. Most of them I find on my own, but I’ve liked having the option of the hints.
  • The two playable characters have added a bit of depth to both the story and the gameplay. Both Ratchet and Rivet play the same, but each voice actor makes it feel different. I’ve really enjoyed the banter with KiT as an alternative to Clank as well; she’s adorable. It’s just another aspect that makes the game flow and seem to go by so much more quickly.

Well that’s enough for now. More impressions later as I progress further.
