Bandai Namco seems to be one of the few publishers willing to entrust its catalogue to Sony’s emulation efforts, but the catch is its titles are launching without Trophies.
PS2 fighting game all-timer SoulCalibur 3 – which is absolutely superb, despite its legacy being overshadowed by its immediate predecessor – is the latest title to launch cleaned up on PS5 and PS4, but yet again there are no gongs to unlock.
The release is included with PS Plus Premium, or can be purchased a la carte for £7.99/$9.99.
And honestly, it’s an impeccable release, with bags of single player content – including an entire real time strategy-style mode named Chronicles of the Sword. It’s a truly fantastic title with loads to see and do.
The gameplay holds up too, running at a clean 60fps on PS5 (we didn’t test PS4 yet) with presentation that doesn’t immediately appear 20 years old.
Some of the classics in Sony’s retro gaming catalogue have been updated with Trophies, so we’re still hoping Bandai Namco decides to do the same with its retro inclusions.
In the case of SoulCalibur 3, we recommend it as it is – but the addition of Trophies would just take it to the next level.
