Just started Darkness 2. Still have a few untouched games in my pile of shame from the PS3.

@Scrambled99 nice, I remember seeing that the Darkness games were received really quite well. Let us know your thoughts as you have more time with it.

Yousef-

@Scrambled99 @colonelkilgore darkness dualogy is pretty solid. Have them on my Xbox via backwards compatibility. They deserve the praise but I should finish them.

Playing Xenoblade, feel free to add me on switch or steam. ✌️

@colonelkilgore nah, I getcha. I do have the game ready to install on my series at any moment. So not like I have inconvenient access to it. Plus it’s a gow-clone (using that term neutrally simply out of habit, not insulting the game) so I can see myself blasting through it in a weekend.

Plus I’m gonna be using The Duke…. To maximize the retroness.

@Yousef- cool, though I think I’d give myself repetitive strain injury wielding the gamma-duke if I tried.

As far as Castlevania: Lords of Shadow goes it’s pretty decent. It took an hour or three for me to think that though as the first few chapters seemed a bit slow and samey but now that I’ve unlocked a few combat moves and magic-abilities I’ve come around to it.

@colonelkilgore shockingly, the Duke is quite comfortable and I like it more than the series controller so far.

Yeah character action games live and die by their upgrades.

@Yousef- yeah it’s turning out to be a real solid pre-2018 God of War clone, glad it’s clicking with you this time. I’m through to chapter 9 rn and it’s pretty much improved with every chapter tbh.

Special shout out to the score too, the music is fantastic, particularly when you get to the castle.

@trev666 some good games there, played a couple of them recently myself. I have Deus Ex: Human Revolution coming up too… played it back in 2011 and recall liking it quite a bit, I also liked Mankind Divided when I played that a few years ago so looking forward to returning to the series.

@colonelkilgore yes, my friend. I’m noticing a lot of other positives too besides the score. Like how I’m invested in the story and setting this time around, and the animations and cutscene transitions are quite seamless too. Very little about this comes off as “generic mid-7th gen game”. The studio also turned out to be located in Madrid, so it’s also nice to know I’m playing my first video game developed in Spain.

@trev666 yeah, not sure exactly when I’ll be getting to Deus Ex but it’ll be before the end of the year. Only ever dabbled with the Max Payne games (played a little bit of the first one on PC) but I have heard that 3 is dope.

Apologies to the colonel if this prompts you to add more games to your ever increasing PS3 backlog. 😂

🤣 it’s all good, I actually have the vast majority of them (75) albeit some of them are the ps4/ps5 versions.

Interesting list though for sure. Pleased to see some of my personal faves getting placed (MGS4, MGS HD Collection, Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Just Cause 2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, inFamous 1 & 2, The Saboteur, Spec Ops: The Line, Sleeping Dogs.

I am personally not Naughty Dogs biggest fan, I like their stuff well enough but I don’t seem to like it as much as the general gaming public… but not surprised to see their output do so well. Also I did appreciate Asylum placing above City, as that has always been my take but most people I’ve interacted with go with the sequel.

Biggest shocks for me, Little Big Planet, Rayman Origins and Heavy Rain placing so high. I’ve only played Heavy Rain and a bit of Little Big Planet but wasn’t overly enamoured by either… and don’t see the three games crop up much in discussions about gaming classics. They obviously hit well the the square-pushers though.

@colonelkilgore Yes, it was a fascinating process to rank these. I can’t remember how much engagement we had exactly but it was probably around… maybe 40-50 core regulars voting? Gosh, I can’t remember. May have been more or less than that. But either way, there’s always some selection bias from the voting pool, but I think we came up with a fairly reasonable ranking. There are many criteria that go into judging a game to be “better” than another game, and so consideration was given to effect on the industry, artistic merit, etc in addition to flat popularity, sales, and Metacritic success.

It’s been a while since I looked at the list but the games you mention are interesting that they did so well, as are the FIFA, MLB, and NBA games that ended up in the top 100. Certain years were known for their innovation over other years, as I recall.

Also, there was some focus on the fact that this was judging the PS3 version of the game, for those that released as a cross gen title like Persona 5, MGS V, etc. Those games would have charted better if the PS4 version was judged, but that wasn’t the project, so the PS3 version was what is ranked.

Anyway, a fascinating academic exercise, to be sure. I only skipped 4 of the top 20 (well… 21 I guess), two of which are Fallout games, and then Dead Space (something I will rectify eventually with the PS5 Remake), and Rayman Origins (which I’ll probably skip since I was lukewarm on Legends). The rest of the top 20 are great nostalgic experiences. My exposure to the list drops off significantly after the top 20 but there’s still some of my favorite PS3 gems in there.

@Th3solution out of interest, how come you’ve never been tempted by Fallout?

@colonelkilgore I can’t answer for him but I can answer for myself at least. I’ve started with fallout 3 and new Vegas on my Xbox so maybe there’s something in 4 I’m missing but I played those two with a giant big ol “uhhh I don’t get it, where’s the gameplay?” It felt like you were wondering around doing quests with no real incentive or allure behind them. I was really curious what I was missing. The setting being so drab and brown didn’t help. I was more allured by oblivion’s dungeons, personally. And generally everything about oblivion games spoke to me more. Thought I’d enjoy most of the Todd-man games but Mr. Todd-man dude either allures you or confuses you. No in-between.

@colonelkilgore Yeah, as @Yousef- mentioned, there wasn’t much enticing to me about the setting, but I never actually played any Fallout and only saw gameplay videos and pictures. It is strange, because I hold Skyrim near and dear as one of my all time favorites, and yet the Bethesda gameplay loop has otherwise never spoke to me.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m very limited in my willingness to tolerate the first person viewpoint, which seems like a silly hang up, but it’s just not my preference. And yet, I have a few first person games that I really love (like the aforementioned Skyrim, which I guess there decent third person option now but when I played it on PS3 that wasn’t really fleshed out). Actually, now that I write this… do any of the Fallouts have a third person view mode? It might make a difference for me to try it.

I also have considered watching that Fallout show and see if that prompts me to investigate the games. Apparently it has sold many people on the setting, which like I said, the drab setting hasn’t really spoken to me.

And a final reason [excuse] would be that I understand that FO3 and New Vegas are the pinnacle of the series, and FO4 was pretty ‘meh’ in comparison, so I’ve considered trying to go back to one of those but not about to turn on my old grey mare PS3. 😅 If we get a FO3/New Vegas Remaster for PS5 then it will be tempting.

@Yousef- it depends what your interested in me personally i love the fallout games but have never enjoyed any elder scrolls games.
